M 18 specs:

18.4in IPS True Life 1900x1080p display

i7 4900 MQOC 4.0ghz

2x 780m SLI

750gig 7200rpm hd+64gig ssd (caching drive)

16 gig 1600mhz ram

win 8

3 year in home warranty/replacement

In b4 "AW is overpriced POS." That's their desktops bros.  No other manufacturer offers the overall build quality, components and aesthetics of AW in the notebook line...at the prices they go for (mostly after 20% discounts).  The only rivals are SAGERs.

My main questions are:

1. Do you think this system can run next gen console ports at 1080p because I heard Sony is using some AMD chip that has magical powers because it has 8 gig GDDR5 ram that can be accessed between both the CPU and GPU and when games get more challenging the chip turbo boosts to the levels of a GTX Titan on the PC?!!!11

2. Do you think the replies in here will have a lot of latent Jel?

I do.

Mad?

Oh and mods, this is "system wars."  I posted a system.  This is a war.  Don't abuse your powerz as you did my last thread...brah.

PC master race.

Mirin?

And there is nothing wrong with a gaming laptop. I use one right now. Got a 7970m on deck and I can play most games at high or max. So im good. Cost me a pretty penny though but i needed it. I travel too much.

It's like $3700, even more ridiculous.  You can build a desktop with GTX 780SLI and an intel hexacore, and still spend less than that.

It's fine if that's really the only choice.  But in general it's better to get a gaming desktop and then a cheaper laptop

unless you're insanely rich, I've always thought spending tons of money on a laptop is stupid. Laptops are meant to be carried around a lot so its much more prone to get stolen or broken. I also doubt a pc like that is very light

No idea on question 1 because any answer would be trying to predict the future. I bought an m17x several years back and it actually was my primary gaming rig for quite a while (I travel for work). Personally, I don't have anything against Alienware laptops. Like Macbooks, you do pay a premium for the name but that also does come with usually the highest possible gaming rig specs as well as pretty decent overall build quality.

Although it's kind of hard to call a 12 lb unit a "laptop" (plus another couple lbs for the power brick). :P

Now is a terrible time to buy a gaming laptop. We are only now seeing the first pass of Haswell based hardware, and it's likely to improve significantly over the next year. Even Razer has a 17" gaming laptop with a single Geforce 765 and an i7-4700HQ that's about the form factor of an old 17" Macbook Pro (under 7lbs and about as thick as the circumference of a dime).

My laptop that I am on right now cost like $800... it can play just about any game on the market.. On max settings? Most.. On the ones it can't... oh well.

Still pretty sweet... If money was absolutely no object to me, I would have the best laptop money could buy... why? because that's why :P

Whether a laptop gets stolen or broken is entirely up to the intelligence/stupidity of the owner. Saying you shouldn't get a laptop because it might get lost/stolen/broken/etc is like saying you should drive a car because you might get in a car accident.

For those saying "my desktop is so much more powerful and cheaper"

OK.  That has been stated for years; except the power gap margins are shrinking.  2 780m SLI is a bit more powerful than a single GTX 780.

Notebooks are easily upgradable.

It's not as expensive as you think when you add in the monitor.

People don't get rolex watches simply for telling time; exclusivity and the people that truly appreciate the miniturization process and a genuine time piece "get it."  I have built desktop PC's for years (up until 2007).  Gave up and moved to notebook gaming and haven't looked back.  Problem?

Don't forget you get much less ROI on a desktop then a notebook and personally I like to game from a sofa and wireless keyboards and staring at a tv screen across the room isn't convenient enough (Strong sloth 10/10).

Let's see, my last notebook was purchased after discounts in 2011 for 2400 (specs in sig).  Actually, after probelms with my 6970s they replaced my entire system in 2012 adding a faster process, Nvidia 580s (better gpus) for free.  So my computer can be sold as a 1 year old computer for about 1500.00 on a quick sale.  I will deduct that from the 3500 I stpend on this and get 2,000.  A lot of money?  Yup. But not a bad ROI by my standards.

I have NO qualms with people who spend 5k on DESKTOPS (SLI Titans) 3 1600p monitors, hexacore CPUs etc.  That's bleeding edge of desktop technology.

I just happen to like bleeding edge of notebook technology.

Plz aware?

There are people with the original M17x (first generation) running 7970ms (current gen).  Most people get a single CPU upgrade unless the socket changes. But no one needs to upgrade CPUs now anyways.  GPUs are on MXM B3.0.  Thats the gold standard and each GPU has been upgraded fine in each system.  I have done it myself.

I am not talking about your standard laptop. I am talking about gaming notebooks as this is a gaming forum.  Plz aware how I am Lion?

quebec946

Oh really? Please aware.

Sager uses Clevo shells. They are plain ugly and unaesthetic.  They also are very powerful.  AW uses Clevo shells but then just upgrades them.  All the internals are very similar.  Both use very similar ram, CPU/GPU combos.  MSI is getting better but their "top tier" dragon g70 (or whatever its called) is about 2700 and includes ONE gpu.  So to get a bigger and better IPS screen, better cooling and a second GPU for 1k more....isn't bad.

Remember these notebooks will be on sale for 20-30% off within a year. Because Dell/AW are so big, they can discount these over the small boutiques.  I am just paying premium because I like to have the best as early as possible to get the most return on investment.

Any other haters left to address?

I was on your side till this.

They are.  AW notebooks are very basic to upgrade.  Takes about 60 minutes to do a good GPU upgrade and thermal repaste on the conservative side.  takes about 30 minutes if you know what you are doing.

I never said they are easier than upgrading desktops.  I've upgraded both and AW notebooks are some of the easiest to upgrade.

Perfect example of more money than brains... right here.

For that $$$, I'd build a desktop PC just as good, w/ a 46" to 55" (depending on distance from screen) HDTV for a monitor and had MOOLAH left over to buy a PS4 and bunch of games.

But good your you..... BRO.
