In a recent Twitter post, popular developer Hideki Kamiya had this to say:

If u hate to finish a game the next day u buy it, u better not play TW101. I focus on how it is fun, not how long it lasts till the ending.Kamiya

Kamiya is the man behind Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and the upcoming Wonderful 101 for Wii U.

What are your thoughts, System Wars? Will this hurt the game's sales thus being another nail in the Wii U coffin? Are system owners supposed to ignore a fault like short-game length and still purchase the game at full price just to show support for the system?

Personally, the game of course should focus on fun but also needs to look at the value. If your game is short you better have a game that urges replayability or the studio should charge less for this title.

Isn't it a beat-em-up? Yeah, I'm not bothered by the length as long as it's got a good amount of replay value. I'll play through it a couple times at least, like other ones I've played.

The game looks pretty bad. I'm not really sure why people are hyping it so much.

Depends how great it's replay value will be.

You can beat a game like Star Fox in an hour or two, but it's always worth replaying due to different paths, secrets, ect.

So the game's shortness may not be a huge problem if it has very good replay value.

I think the opposite.

The art-style looks great to me and the game runs silky-smooth and looks sharp and "clean".

Very arcade-style, imo.

Kamiya's gameplay is usually the highlight of his games, according to fans.

It looks different, I'll say that. I haven't been watching the game too closely but I was partially interested. I've never been that big of a fan of Kamiya's games though.

It's a game by the Bayonetta, Okami, and Viewtiful Joe creator. What's not to hype?

I'd rather have a fun game, that I would want to replay over something that is padded just to make a game longer.

From the gameplay videos it seems that the Wonderful 101 looks like it could have a lot of leaderboards and score-based gameplay promoting several play throughs of the levels and all of that. A more old-school approach to the overall design.

I wouldn't just throw it out because he's hinting that it may be shorter than other games.

Damage control incoming? This is the type of thing that would be said if budget got cut, or game was being rushed to meet a deadline. There of course is some truth to it regardless of his motivations. I might be ok with what he says. But that depends on if the game is 2 hours on initial play-through, or 5 hours? I've definitely played some 10-15 hour games that could have easily been managed in 5 hours if not for artificial barriers. So it really depends on the quality and replay-ability of the game... and exactly HOW short and lacking of content it is.

Fun matters not length. But anything less than 4 hours is disconcerting.

If the game is going to be short, they should at least make it insanely difficult so that it lasts longer.

Most of Platinum Games are pretty short but I always found them to be meant to be played over and over. So I find value there and plus their games rarely ever drag on. If they force it to be longer, it'll turn out like Lords of Shadow where it just drags on for me. It ruined the pacing. I rarely find pacing issues in most of Platinum games.

I don't get why some people want every game to be like 10+ hours long but eh...

Edit- mwahaha managed to throw in some Lords of Shadow hate in my post. :D It was just an example but I really do hate it when games just drag on and ruin itself. Though I definitely love plenty of games that lasted me 100+ hours. It just depends on the genre.

If it's comparable to the length of a Halo or Gears game then I'm sure it'll be fine. And before someone says "bu but teh multiplayer adds teh value" that didn't affect my decision to buy those games as I don't often play the multiplayer in them.

So the game's shortness may not be a huge problem if it has very good replay value.

nameless12345

At best starfox only takes 3 playthroughs.. factor in its length and it doesn't actually have that much replay value. It was one of the more overrated nintendo games, especially on the 64. Game had no content really.

I never let the credits decide when I'm done with a game.

However, there better be more to do outside of just beating it. Difficulty levels and score/ranking systems akin to Devil May Cry would be very welcome.

It's not really an opinion, any game that can be completed in 1-2 hours without speed running has no content.

So in what way does it "not having any content" and "being over-rated" impact my enjoyment of it? ;)

There's nothing I hate more in a game than when it gets boring, repetitive and dragged on. So I approve of this.

Most of Platinum Games are pretty short but I always found them to be meant to be played over and over. timmy00

This. I know its a Platinum game that doesn't normally have long times to it, but there is a better chance that I will be skipping this game for now until the game drops in price.

I can't stand paying 60 bucks nowadays for games that may be lacking. I tend to not go for replayibility unless its an RPG or a fighter for the most part so that makes this a hard sell.

Eh not a big deal at all as long as it set up to be replayed more than once. Seems to be pretty arcade like so that would be better than having it drag on.

Meh, at least he is being honest. Gonna wait for some reviews, maybe get it with a price drop. I loved Vanquish, and it is a pretty short game.
