Here is a new quote form the interview:

Eurogamer: One of the things that stood out in Microsoft's press conference was the Forza team saying it was the definitive simulation racer. How do you feel about that?

Kazunori Yamauchi: I don't exactly know what their announcement was about, but we've evolved over 10 years through our history, towards GT5, and I don't know if it's something that can be compared.

I like how Kaz didn't throw a cheap shot back at Turn10. :)

The thing is that Forza is a great franchise, but that doesn't mean GT is no longer fun just because there is a comparable or even mildly better experience out there. Even if Forza scores higher and sells more I will still have fun with GT, sometimes trivial preferences are just that.

warbmxjohn

I used to be a huge GT fan. I started with GT2 and bought a PS2 for GT3... for $550 (back when the Canadian dollar still sucked ass). Then put well over 500 hours into it. Then once I got GT4 it felt like an expansion pack. Just more cars and tracks in the same game. And I also put another 500 hours into that game as well.

Then I got a 360 and Forza 2. Within an hour of playing with the gamepad I knew it was the superior series. Hands down. Then I got the wireless wheel and haven't looked back since. Forza is the definitive console sim racer now. GT is still stuck in the '90s'. I can understand people liking GT more... but Forza took the racing sim crown away in 2005.

~~~
@Rikusaki's quote: "Evolved" how? Its been the same game since GT2 with new cars, new tracks and prettier graphics.
I don't like the attitude of the devs behind Turn10. They sound like they are desperate. You don't see Kazunori going around saying,
"GT5 will look better than FM3"
"GT is the definitive simulation racer"
"Gran Turismo 5 the most beautiful and realistic racing game ever made."
All I did was take quotes from Turn10 Devs and switched out FM with GT.
Yawn. Sure they can release the game anytime they want because they know people want to play the game so bad that they will pay 40 bucks for a demo and defend it. They could release GT in wireframe mode only and people will call it the most realistic driving experience ever. It's getting really boring. They can release it anytime they want but they won't because they know that he competition is really strong now. Everybody has good looking racers now. You'd better bring more than that.
Yeah, telling the public that has been waiting forever for your game"We could release it anytime we want", but will still make you wait anyway isn't arrogant at all.
Come on man, please. Kaz is arrogant as hell.
well hell, they're trying to take on the competition with GT5, that's why it's taking them so long. it's no excuse though, in fact it's becoming embarrassing that it takes them this long to get the game out. It's loaded with cotent, it looks pretty, ok. By the time this game comes out, at least TWO other forza's will have released. why didn't it take them this long to make ONE DAMN GAME? i really hope this game is good, in fact, it probably will be "top notch" "grade A" or whatever. It's a shame that playing catch up hurt them so bad.
It's also a shame that once GT5 comes out, not nearly as many people will care. they really shot themselves in the face with this game
You don't understand. In the original Japanese text, the grammar he used wouldn't have came off as arrogant. When translated to English, yes, it makes him sound quite arrogant. He basically said that they are ready to release it , but we still want to polish it some more.
I have no doubt that GT 5 will be polished as hell, but it's like you said it's taking too long. Forza's car models may not look as nice, but it plays just as good and to some people, better than GT. It's got a ton of features AND it's fun to play while still being able to hold it's own as a sim.
As for people not caring about GT5, I disagree. It's gonna sell like crazy.
yes, it will sell, a lot too if the other 4 are any indication, but i have a feel people aren't going to care as much this time around because the game has changed. The first three GT's were like gods. the little competition they had was easily tosted aside. It's different now. You have your Forza, and your burnout and PGR, midnight club, nascar games etc. Not all exactly being sims, but the same concept of sexy cars and pretty graphics. It's impact will be vastly smaller than any of its predescers. The competition is there now, and its vastly worthier than before. Like you said, forza was just as good, if not better than GT4, and forza 2-3 are improving that. Grand turismo has been out of the picture for too long, i think, and developers snatched the oppertunity to bring it down. I really can't say i think it will be the "be all-end all racer" like 1-3 were
but hey, im just speculating
But you do see him touting their 50+ millions sales as if it means something.
And I distinctly remember you quoting Kazunori calling his project the "definitive racing game" some time ago. And really, its all in the title of the damn game.
True, but he still doesn't look at the Forza series as competition for GT. They are both great games.
Here is a new quote form the interview:
I like how Kaz didn't throw a cheap shot back at Turn10. :)
Rikusaki
Or, it can be seen as Kaz taking a huge cheap shot at Forza by saying the two developers' respective achievements can't be compared.
And let's not act like he hasn't thrown jabs at other racers now...
"Actually, I have difficulty playing other games for over five minutes. A lot of the low-level quality just stands out so much in other games that I can't stand them!"
Link
"I try them out a little bit. The only impression I get from those games is that the only benchmark for Gran Turismo is Gran Turismo and we have to base ourselves on that."
Just because they are both great games doesn't mean he doesn't look at the Forza series as competition. I don't see where you get the idea that the video game industry should be some magical place of rainbows and glitter where everybody gets first place. I'm sure the devs are not thinking in those dreamy kind of terms. Competition can be a good thing and I guarantee you that the devs of both franchises are evaluating eachother's games and making decisions based on that evaluation, which would be a form of competition.
Sounds good, but I still think we will see this game in early 2010, not late 2009. Maybe the gap between FM3's release and GT5's won't be as big as we thought.
I'm not saying that it will take 3 years (though I don't believe that the game is finished). I'm just challenging the "the longer, the better" logic.
Even though I'm not really into car racing sims, it would be nice to see Sonyrelease one of their flagship titles. Who knows how far they are on the build this may all be PR b.s to quell the rage that all GT fans have. Help give them a little hope that GT5 might see the light of day soon rather then later.
Of course they do a lot of research... but with GT4 they failed to live up to the standards of Forza Motorsport on the Xbox... which provided a more realistic experience. And now with two more ground-breaking Forza's coming out before the next "proper" GT, its going to look really bad for them if it is anything short of "perfect." Which of course is impossible to achieve.
The thing is that Forza is a great franchise, but that doesn't mean GT is no longer fun just because there is a comparable or even mildly better experience out there. Even if Forza scores higher and sells more I will still have fun with GT, sometimes trivial preferences are just that.
I think he is probably waiting on Forza 3 release date.
GT really has no other competitor so I doubt that has anything to do with it.
I wish Sony never created the PSP or they take a different approach with it. Alot of the games they make for it just don't do it justice and should just stay on consoles. They need more of these PSN titles to release on PSP.
They told us what major features will be included. We didn't know much about GT4 either before it was released. Polyphony is weird like that.
So then... release it. Or is he just lying to keep GT-fans excited?
I think he is probably waiting on Forza 3 release date.
GT really has no other competitor so I doubt that has anything to do with it.
Wait weren't you dearly departed like some of the other vets from SW? Meaning didn't you suffer the hammer, if I'm mistaken I apologize.
Hummm interesting...So you are not standing behind the "He laughed at a 2010 release" anymore?
Rikusaki
Not really, no.
Finished with it? Yet they showed no gameplay or spoke about anything we can expect in the game?..You "honestly" believe that?
Can yea link me to the part in Sony's E3 key note they confirmed anything? ..I must have missed that part...:?
It's funny you bring up GT4..Poly also confirmed Online for GT4......But I am again at a loss for words....Of the hundreds of hours I put into that game...I cant find the menu to go online..:(
Can yea help me with that?
i think he is refraining from talking smack because he knows how good of a competitor F3 will be. You can't talk too much smack and not back it up. Forza has not gotten the respect it deserves. it has been the best sim for the last 4 years and is trying for a 3 peat. I'd love to see them release on the same day.
So would you be okay without waiting 3 more years?
Come on now, they are finished with the game. I HIGHLY doubt it will take 3 years to work out some bugs.
I'm not saying that it will take 3 years (though I don't believe that the game is finished). I'm just challenging the "the longer, the better" logic.
obviously u can "challenge the wait longer and better logic" i can prove it to you L4d 2 with wis barely even a new game because its rushed. and i doubt this game will take 3 years to finish since its been in development for 3 already. and im pretty sure if it comes out in the next 3 years which it wont it would probably be the best racing game on the market. But the chances of that is next to none. Im sure if polyphony takes their time thenthis game will be amazing.
They decided that it couldn't be done the way they wanted to with the PS2. Other than damage, WRC and Nascar, nothing was confirmed at E3. Dynamic weather was confirmed in an interview a while before E3.
Nope. I didn't know the first Forza was released right after GT 4. That is kinda sad that they have been able to make 3 Forza games in the time it takes PP to release one. Well it seems they were working on the PSP version of GT to but still it releases around the same time as Forza 3.
Ohhh so it's not in the game...Whewww.....I thought I was going nuts for a second...
But by the history of how Ploy cuts "major" features before the release of a game...You trust they won't do the same with damage or dynamitic weather effects?
That's nice. You can release it whenever you want, but you're also becoming irrelevant by the day, Polyphony. The last time you were on top was with GT3.
BioShockOwnz
That's quite the exaggeration.
Quite, but some people feel that way.
We saw something similar to this in GT3. I'm pretty sure that weather effects and nighttime racing will be no problem for the PS3.
