Keiji Inafune - Great Dishonor - Shame

Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune's spiritual successor to the Blue Bomber, Mighty No. 9, has received a new trailer and the reaction hasn't been good.

The latest trailer (below) currently has 5234 downvotes and only 583 upvotes on YouTube.

The overwhelming majority of the criticism seems to focus on its generic graphics, cringe-inducing dialogue, and atrocious voice-acting. The trailer's narrator in particular makes some painfully unfunny jokes, like that your power-ups will "make the bad guys cry like an anime fan on prom night." Eek!

"Wow. This is going to be shown in classrooms on how NOT to advertise your product from now on.," said YouTuber DreamcastGuy.

"This is the worst marketing I have ever seen.," chimed in NickonAquaMagna.

"The people that backed this must feel really dumb," added YouTuber eight.

In all fairness, our Chris Donlan and Chris Bratt gave Mighty No. 9 a go last summer and found it very enjoyable.

Guess we'll see how the final product stacks up upon its 24th June launch in the UK (or 21st June in North America) on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, Mac and Linux. (3DS and Vita ports to follow.)

Who's the target audience for this trailer? That's the question I ask myself, those who made the trailer apparently didn't know shit.

Yeah I'm starting to regret backing it in some ways, though luckily I barely put any money in (just enough to play it). I'm not obsessed with graphics, but oh man does it look like a low budget game (I mean look at those explosions!). The worst part is it lacks any charm or character too. The art style that was offered up on the Kickstarter page was A LOT better, but that's just me. The gameplay looked okay, but still pretty meh considering all the money poured into it. A shame too because I thought at the very least you couldn't go wrong with established developers, but anything is possible on Kickstarter/crowd funding.

Well if I've learned anything from Nintendo marketing, which is pretty cringy, it usually doesn't reflect on the quality of the actual game itself which is good.

Oh well Ill find out myself on launch day. Already preordered it, I was a MM fan back in the day, hopefully the gameplay delivers. I really enjoyed that Strider reboot, but this could go either way.

I've seen a lot worse advertising for games over the years. Was it great, no, but it isn't nearly as bad as what some are trying to make it out to be.

The game looks a lot worse than the trailer. It looks like a student project by a Mega Man fan. Also why does this game even have a boxed copy ? I doubt it would even fill up 1/50th of the capacity of a Blu-Ray disc.

Honestly, it looked all right.

Thing is, when you see the level design in games like woolly world and tropical freeze, this level design pales in comparison.

Somehow I still feel it's going to be delayed yet again. And Insulting ANIME fans? Uhhh....that's the opposite of how you get your target audience to buy your stupid kickstarter game.

I'd hope that all those dislikes were from the overall cringiness of that video, and not just solely over the anime fan joke.

Mighty Number 9's marketing and some other decisions around it have been a huge mess for sure. That being said all I care about is how good the game actually is and if it is ultimately worth putting my money into. Will continue to be in wait and see mode with this game.

Problem is that a large portion of Megaman fans, and backers of this, are also anime fans. Not all, but a large enough portion that they should have known that making fun of them was gonna have backlash.

It's not that bad. On par with the cringeworthy Ratchet and Clank movie trailer with wannabe funny one liners thats actually not funny. If you want to see one that's bad--watch the Assassin's Creed movie trailer. That one gave me goosebumps. This is the ass creed trailer in a nutshell. "OMG we are so cool running and jumping everywhere with blades in our hands. Watch as i stab this guy and that guy with a 'cool' move and smile because I'm sooooo 'cool'!"

The business man is always the one who becomes popular. Steve Jobs doesn't deserve his popularity. Wozniak and Dennis Ritchie are the truly greats and they remain unknown to most folks.
