Killer 7 developer Goichi Suda, who is currently working on No More Heroes for the Wii, has revealed in an interview with Japanese magazine Dengeki that he might be looking at the Xbox 360 for his next project. When asked why, the Grasshopper founder said it was mainly due to the large fan base in North America, and that developing on the Xbox 360 would be a challenge, comparing it to "entering the Major Leagues."

I suspect he is really dissapointed in the response his game got from the Wii crowd so I can't blame him.

Umm the game hasn't been released in the States or Europe yet. Granted it flopped in Japan but honestly did anyone think it would do well?

Hasn't this been 'news' for over a year now?

I mean, we've known for a while that he wants to make a 360 game, and that he'll be working with Kojima for his next Wii game.

The problem with No More Heroes is its geared towards hardcore gamers. And I predict only a slim minority of even that group is going to end up buying it. The sales in Japan are just the beginning of whats probably going to be an awful game sales-wise. Doesnt mean its not going to be good, hes jsut going to have to make his games appeal to a broader adience if hes going to want to keep making them.

Exactly. Also no offense but I don't know how he can profit on the 360 since development costs and game expectations are so high and he runs small-medium development team.

Suda's games are the definition of niche, he is not going to get big sales anywhere. His games are ultra-violent but not in the popular Grand Theft Auto type of way, rather they are wacky and over the top and are more about sty1e then gameplay. These niche kinds of games (i.e. Okami, Zack & Wiki, Viewtiful Joe, ICO, P.N.03, Killer7, etc.) are never going to consistently sell big (i.e. million+) but if marketed right they will consistently get 300,000-500,000 or so in sales. Developers like Suda need to focus more on keeping costs down (smaller, more focused teams with a longer development cycle) and market to the hardcore markets via non-traditional forms of marketing (i.e. developer blogs, developer presence on the big gaming forums, availability of action figures, art books, comic books, special edition versions of their games).

I guess those sad photos depicting desolate stores at the release of No More Heroes in Japan have made him lose faith. A shame considering Nintendo is very much the spiritual home for his games, ah well I shall still be picking up No More Heroes on European release as I enjoyed both Killer7 and the unacknowledged DS gem, Contact. I just wonder if one of his games would necessarily be successful on 360, although the audience seem to gravitate around more violent games I wonder if his abstract and quirky titles will not be too off-putting.

To further elaborate on the post I made earlier. Suda needs to take a look at developer Treasure to see how to operate his business. Treasure has been successful and have been around for nearly 15 years and yet most of their games have not been big sellers, and in fact their games are probably even more obscure then Suda's games. However those games (i.e. Ikaruga, Bangai-O, Sin & Punishment, Radiant Silvergun, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Mischief Makers) as well as a hardcore focused marketing push always nets them a decent amount of sales and given the fact that their team is very small (like 30 or 40 people) when compared to the 100's of peopel that get put on titles like Final Fantasy they manage to be profitable.
