The N64 had Goldeneye, Turok and Perfect Dark.

The xbox had Halo and Riddick.

The 360 of course has GeoW

The PC has had more than its fair share of FPS's.

Is the hype around Killzone 2 from PS owners really born out of the fact they've rarely experienced a decent FPS, or is it deservedly hyped as a benchmark in console gaming?

Well we do have resistance.. I think the hype is because it looks graphically superior then anything so far on console (my opinion) + i love fps's so .. Ps2 has had , killzone , red faction.. and timesplitters b4 it went multi But the ps2 did lack exclusive fps's... too busy dominating with other genres :P

I agree, in every other genre it did indeed dominate. Red faction was poor in comparison though and timesplitters a was distinctly old school in comparison to todays shooters. It's never had an involving FPS (prior toR2 of course), like most PC and console owners have experienced... It's great PS3 owners finally have a decent FPS to crow about. I just think the rest of the community are a little bit 'been there - done that'

That's a little harsh. Plugging in Goldeneye for the first time in 97 wasn't a bad experience. Likewise Halo CE on laucnh day was prety spectacular...

Resistance 2 out now and Killzone2 in a few months, I think Sony have remedied the problem of no FPS's.

There's little distiniction betwen an FPS and TPS. Come on - we both know that. The only differnece is that you see a head/body on the screen or you don't. The mechanics are the same. Let's not be facetious...

Yeah I know. I've actually enjoyed my fair share of console shooters. :P I just felt like posting the obligatory hater statement. Goldeneye was great and I was hooked on Halo 2's online play for a good bit. However this gen seems to be more of a wash. CoD4 is one of the more addictive shooters to come around and its multiplat. And honestly I think R1 and definitely R2 offer up a better and fresher experience than Halo 3.

Doesn't alter the fact that they are both different genres. Although nowadays the line between TPS and FPS is getting thinner all the time, seeing as both genres tend to have almost exactly the same controls.

My point exactly! I hope KZ2 will be great, although I can't help but feel this exagerated hype is precisely because of the reason you've mentioned - 10 years of PS yet the only relevant FPS is one released within the last month or so.

They both require exactly the same actions, just a differant perspective on the game (i.e either through the eyes or a couple feet back from the head). A differant viewing angle is not a differant genre.

I loved Halo CE, even more so than my little pusscat (squeaky), but between you me and the gatepost, Halo 3 just didn't pump my nads either. Resistence wasn't bad (albeit generic) though I agree, Personally I thought GeoW was a pile o' overproduced hollywood-ised sh*te. I can't help but think re: KZ2, that most 360/PC owners are slightly nonchalant about the whole affair.

Most first and third person shooters play similarly, the perspective is the defining factor in determining the genre.

Resistence isn't an H2, Halo or Goldeneye - we both know that. Hopes are firmly planted on KZ2 becoming PS's Goldeneye or Halo, somthing PS owners have missed out on over the last decade.

Not genre per se, just the viewpoint. Otherwise we could argue that Spcae invaders is of the 'shoot em up' genre, Pacman the 'gobble em up' genre, and frogger the 'hop across the roads on logs' genre

Ok, I'll stop mocking their "AAAE" game :P

Really though, if we're just looking at FPS's that are developed/published by Sony and MS it's really a case of Resistance 1/2 & Killzone 2 vs Halo 3 and Perfect Dark Zero. I'd probably take Sony's offerings over Microsoft's although I do absolutely love the Halo series.

I'm, not talking neccesarily about the current gen - if you've been an xbox/PC follower since its inception, then you'll be pretty worn out by FPS's That's the one area PS followers have missed out on. R1 was okay, R2 I quite enjoyed, but I can't help but feel its put on a pedestal by PS3 owners due to little competition more than anything else...

also PS3 owners have enjoyed other FPS games that arent exclusives(cause *gasp* multiplats vastly outnumber exclusives) COD 4 Rainbow Six Vegas 1/2 Farcry 2 Battlefield Bad COmpany Bioshock(late) Orange Box(the inferior version) Either way PS3 gamers have had there share of good games.

I think you are thinking too much in the sense of exclusives. I mean PS3 owners also have COD4 and Bioshock and FarCry 2 and The Darkness and COD:W@W to compare it with, and many people would say that COD4 is the best FPS of the gen. So when PS3 owners say R2 is great, they arent just throwing it out there due to the lack of good FPSes, they have great games to compare and contrast to.

Resistance 1, maybe. I think Resistance 2 is geniunely seen as a great FPS regardless of the competition. But I agree that the PS1/2 didn't have any good exlcusive FPS games at all, it's pretty much the only genre they were lacking in. This is one area in which the PS3 beats it's predecessors.

That's my point - its precisely because the PS3 has a new found experience in FPS's, are we putting KZ2 on too high a pedestal when the rest of the market simply views it at as 'just another FPS'?.

Well we do have resistance.. I think the hype is because it looks graphically superior then anything so far on console (my opinion) + i love fps's so .. Resistance and Resistance 2 are both brilliant games and the series deserves to represent PS in terms of FPS's

But there are many non-exclusives FPS on the PS3, that are competition for exclusive tittles.

...but its never had a goldeneye or Halo. The PS has long wanted an exclusive 'halo killer'. That's been its weak spot. Are we putting too much hope in KZ2? It seems so. To PS owners it seems to be like the second coming...

GeoW also isn't an FPS. Try again.

Oh I'm sorry. We'll move the camera 3 feet from the protagonists head and call it differnt genre shall we?

It is a different genre. If you're going to use that ridiculous logic we might as well call MGS4 an FPS and make this thread null and void.

That's my point - its precisely because the PS3 has a new found experience in FPS's, are we putting KZ2 on too high a pedestal when the rest of the market simply views it at as 'just another FPS'?.

It's a COD4, Bioshock and HL:E2, all of them the best of the FPS genre.

But you HAVE To consider that they are both different genres despite that they play very similiar , because by going with that logic I could count uncharted as a 'fps' or socom , mgs4 , warhawk , time crisis 4 , so if u think 3rd persons should be classified like a fps then the ps3 does not lack a decent 'fps' Oh and for some reason haze has not been mentioned once despite being an exclusive fps good or not lol

Where did I mention GRAW? You're just clutching at straws now. GeoW is in third person for the entire game, so how is it a first person shooter?

If you go into the options screen you can change it to 1st person, but it does not feel the same. 3rd Person is much better for that game. And GRAW is a 3rd person shooter.

I played GRAW in first person perspective. I did a little in 3rd also. My point mentioning GRAW was that by your own definition I played the sames game but in 2 differant genres. Am i wrong?
