I wasted my hard earned 10 minutes to do this.

As you can see, in the rendered image you can see that an there is an invisible light source :o

Just because you can see the light, doesn't mean it isn't there.

swazidoughman

yes, in programming that is possible. in real life, its not.

kz2 went for realism... in that pic, it looks kinda funny having that intense light with no actual source. source, as in how it would look in real life, not programming

No, i'm not a dev and know nothing of how to design 3d etc, but i did already play a little with some developing engines and autodesks like Maya, and it's perfectly possible for you to put a light from whatever angle you want without "attaching" it to an object.

In fact, the light can be like an object itself, and it'll work perfectly. As it is in that shot.

You really think that every light sources in games have an object "explaining" it's existence? That's far from the truth, and don't take an expert to realize that.

SambaLele

in programming, yes, light can be an object. in a game that boasts realism like kz2, you would think that light needs a source, especially in such an obvious place like in the pic

If you go nitpick like that on all games, you'll see that 100% of them do that.

There is not one game that doesn't do that... maybe Crysis, but even in that one you could probably find lights without a "source".

i dont remember seeing anything that obvious in other games...

but then again, i dont remember other games being scrutinized like this

The usage in of fake when talking about lighting in software refers to whether or not the lighting is baked in.
So your usage of fake in this situation is useless and meaningless.

It's a bunch of nonsense spread by people completely misinterpreting the technical details of their engine. I assure you there's nothing "fake" about the way Killzone 2 handles its lighting.

Teufelhuhn

How is the lighting in KZ2 done? Its impressive, but i always wondered how they did it different from any other game. I know Halo 3 had "true" HDR, but what methods do KZ2 use?

They use deferred rendering, which was new and neat a few years ago but is pretty common these days. Uncharted uses a form of deferred rendering...so does GTAIV, Resistance 2, Dead Space, Crackdown, and a whole bunch of others. Killzone 2 is just famous for it because they made a big deal about it. :P

Oh ok, thanks, I always wondered how they did it when i was playing :P But i think they shouldve used better shadows instead of the fancy lighting, i absolutely LOATHE games with horrible shadows, especially Far Cry 2 on 360, have you seen that?? Why do the shadows look like that?? lol

my usage of fake is in regards to how it would look if it was real, not the programmers definition of 'light source', which you try to keep using

in real life, what would you call a light with no source? nothing... there is no such thing.

I just loaded up that level, and there is a visible source of the light (or a geometric representation as some would put it). The lamp is out of sight in that pic because the wall on the right is in the way.

Do you see just how stupid it is to argue over this stuff now?

i think it was an article where some self-proclaimed designer noticed somethings. he pointed to this picture to show the 'fake lighting'

It's not fake, it's just doctored.

doctored

Im sorry but due to the angle of the picture it would be impossable to see the light source. Any dumba$$ with half a brain should be able to figure out that the source of light in this pic would be comming off the wall on the right hand side. Or from the left side of the helghast. From this perspective we shouldn't be able to see any source of light.

There is nothing fake about the lighting in KZ2, alot of the game is darker anyways. The parts that are lighted are done very well thanks to the RSX and the engine. People will say anything these days to try and knock the best looking game this Gen so far.djsifer01

Alot of the lighting is actually faked by incorporating the lighting and shadows into the textures. The relatively small amount of dynamic lighting is not faked, it's just not HDR...

This is so common that every game uses it a LOT. You just didn't realize it first because no one stopped you to focus like they did on this thread.

Also, just to clarify one thing to you, GG themselves said that KZ2 was not about realism but "hollywood realism".

Seriously who cares?! it's pathetic that console kids argue about some advanced tech that almost isn't there on the consoles. Want some HDR and "real" lighting? play Crysis and Stalker:Clear Sky, both looks a lot better than Fakezone 2

No I was just saying that everyone knows crysis is king ****. And KZ2 is the console king. We don't need a reminder about crysis every time someone mutters the words killzone 2. It's getting old.

I know you never said anything about the lightin. Your post was simply the first post I could quote with a picture in it for reference while I scrolled up the page. The reply was not directed at you but, rather, the idiots who can't follow a simple light source and figure out on their own that you will not be able to see the source due to the angle of the picture. Not to mention that pic was released pre-alpha if not earlier.

That guy must be an idiot.

A light source is clearly making an object cast a shadow.

yeah, but where is that light source?

at that angle of shadow, the light source should be somewhere directly behind that helgast dude. but there isnt anything there

There are two light sources. One behind and one to the right not visable to the player. This wasn't part of the game either.

Baking the lighting into lightmaps is very common...games that don't do it are in the minority. Killzone 2 actually has a huge amount of dynamic light sources compared to most of other games.

I guess since we haven't seen any links to anyplace that says otherwise, we'll just have to trust the developers and our eyes on this one.

For what? 360 has no PROVEN graphics contenders coming up. It has a fake tech demo that isn't even apearing in the final game(Alan Wake) and a few multiplats....Don't get me wrong, I'll believe it when I see it and competition is always good. If 360 isn't pushing the envelope then PS3 has no reason to get any better either. But for the Time being 360 has no OFFICIAL contenders. Wait till we see some REAL gameplay footage of AW before getting hyped, otherwise you're just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

No, there's no "console graphics king." Those kinds of things imply exclusion of the PC, and here on System Wars, that's considered trolling / off topic posting. Killzone 2 is not graphics king; Crysis is. And that will be mentioned every time a delusional cow claims otherwise.

And I suppose you feel proud about claiming that you're just as delusional as lemmings used to be? As far as reality is concerned, you're both wrong. And two wrongs don't make a right.

Seeing you're pc gamer by looking at your sig, I guess you're feeling really left out because no one talks about the 'real' graphics king anymore right?

I guess I can help you then...

This thread sucks, crysis still have the best lighting + shadows + models + everything.

edit: btw I'm not delusional because I just joined into this thread.

Yeah that's not realistic at all. It gets darker when you look at the sun everyone knows that.

Seriously though, I understand why people hate on KZ2. I mean it runs like that right out the box. No need to hack the code or hammer multiple graphics cards togeather, or hire a gerbil to blow on your MoBo when you play to keep it cool.

It's a bunch of nonsense spread by people completely misinterpreting the technical details of their engine. I assure you there's nothing "fake" about the way Killzone 2 handles its lighting.

i think it was an article where some self-proclaimed designer noticed somethings. he pointed to this picture to show the 'fake lighting'

Am I the only one who thinks the actual "light" is obscured by the wall on the right?

You can't seriously think it actually looks like that gif when you look at the sun .

Helghan =/= Earth, so lighting conditions are different.

Also, me thinks KZ2 isn't going for a realistic sty1e of graphics.

I don't know how you guys define 'fake lighting', because in games all sorts of lightings requires a light source. Thats different from a light. I'm not going to take a side to argue here, but light sources are everywhere in the game, and they are all capable of casting shadows on the characters. Not that all of them have to represent an actual light bulb or lamp post in the game though.

Shhhh, You'll ruin it for the less gifted people. Let them say whatever they want to help them sleep at night. While that particular shot is a bullshot, The light source is indeed blocked from view by the wall.

Too bad KZ didn't look like that though. A little more color would have been nice.
