So you're going to dismiss a game as a flop because it didn't sell millions of copies even though most of its review were 9/10 or higher? That makes perfect sense!
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I thought this was suppose to be the best title on the PS3 (next to MGS IV), so what happened? I can't believe that a game with this much development time and hype has sold as little as it has. Although I was looking to get Killzone 2 but now having second thoughts since it looks like a complete flop.
I think this is a pretty clear indication that a majority of people use their PS3s as Blu-ray player first. I definatley do. I think Sony may have screwed themselves. They won the format war at the cost of their gaming division. They better hope PS2 and PSP can keep them a float because if Sony exclusives can't sell on the PS3 then there is no hope for third party development which will eventually mean a game library looking very similar to the Gamecube.
So the question is, why did Killzone 2 have such lousy sales and what can Sony do to actually sell games on their system? Now I know this is the Sony Wars forum but I will let the NPD numbers speak for themselves. Halo 3 is still in the top 20 by the way, almost two year old game.

Yeah as for Blu Ray man i have never even watched a Blu Ray Movie!
Oh i own a PS3 but 1st Person Shooters are a dozen a dime and i want somthing else for the PS3 something like Demons Souls.
[QUOTE="RM84x"]TS, you are clearly uninformed. Killzone2 has already DOUBLED the sales of Killzone1. Anyone who says that's bad obviously reads too much into what ppl post here. yoyo462001So what if it doubled the sales, you dont balance the books and compare it to the previous game you compare it to how much you spent in development and seeing the opportunity cost of producing it. My guess is when MW2 comes out the amount of K2 players will fall dramatically. In FPS's thats the problem with PS3 has no games that can compete in terms of user base with call of duty.
Everything falls to Modern Warefare. Look at what happened on 360. CoD4 was #1 for many, many months. The only reason Halo 3 is now back at #1 is because the community split between WaW and 4.

If you are going to claim your franchise the "Halo killer" you better sell more than 1.66 million units worldwide. And what percentage is that for all the PS3s sold?
I am betting it's under 20%, yeah, it's a success.
Much lower actually, but as long as they make a decent profit it's a success... can't be easy with the $50 mil the spent on making the game. You're not going to get it because it didn't sell enough?I thought this was suppose to be the best title on the PS3 (next to MGS IV), so what happened? [QUOTE="_Peoples_Champ_"][QUOTE="Nuck81"]Pass on Killzone 2. It;s a pretty mediocre shooter. Nuck81I like your style, a member of the PSN network's opinion. I don;t really care too much about fanboyism, blind praise, and blind hate. If a game sucks it sucks,
You can't really say it sucks, it received great reviews across the boards, unless you mean 'in your opinion', no?
yeah, cos multiplats (which are superior) and Pc/360 games don't exist, lolHalo 3 is still selling well, because that is the only game you guys have for Xbox360. So anyone who buys a 360 has to get a 2 year old game. A lot more choices here on the PS3 side.

Compared to the other platform big hitters? Crysis sold over 1.5 million and hateboys play that as being a sales failure, Killzone was in development longer and with PS3 probably cost allot more to make.
How can something sell over a million units and fail?
I think some of you just have unrealistic expectations.
ImaPirate0202
Easy, by not selling enough to break even. The sales of a game on their own are irrelevant, what matters is the relation between sales and financial investment.
I'm sure Killzone 2 has made a profit, but under 2 million sales for a game of this hype and developer investment is under-performing.

i'm sorry, that's bs in my books. COD4 rated M for mature.
KZ2 flopped because the controls were screwed up, sony sucks at marketing / advertising, and people just didn't end up liking it - if they did then word of mouth should have this thing on fire in terms of sales, but yet again PS3 owners prove that they can't be ******* to buy quality games on their console.

UFC 09 nearly sold 2 MILLION on the 360 alone and its multiplat! Exclusives usually are more appealing and sell more, but a highly hyped, high budgeted exclusive shooter cant even sell more than a yearly sports multiplat
The hell, why are people looking into the sales? Unless you have invested in the stock market(if you do that business buy yourself some Apple stocks) there is no need to post this information or make a thread like this. I thought it was a great game, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes games where you kill polygons. Ummm... If you love a game you'd better hope it sells well so the devs decide to make a sequel or decide NOT to go multiplat (see Kojima and MGS for example, or FF)
I stopped reading and caring right there. You buy your games based on how well they sell instead of how good they are. I've even heard the online community is dwindling already after only a few months. This time next year it will be finished while Halo 3's community goes from strength to strength.
ujjval16
where did you here that? :|
the online community in killzone is fine, and the new maps GG keeps pumping out are bringing people back for more. Very very very very few ( i cannot stress this enough) games keep the same sized online community 2 or 3 months later. to think the game would put up the same numbers it had in march wouldn't be a very smart to think. and hey, halo 3 averages what? 200 000 players a day or something? that sure as hell "dwindled" from when the game came out.
i dunno what you have against the game tbh, 4 months later its still going strong, around 180 000 players a week strong
Well actually in the past 24 hours 778,362 unique players have logged on. But I do believe that Killzone 2 is a success sales wise. You're gonna hurt some fanboys' feeling slinging actual numbers around like that. ;P

Sure it will still sell, but it's clearly not the flagship title Sony wanted it to be, and it's not going to turn much of a profit.

see the problem with sony is that once they are half way throuhg making a "flagship title" they start hyping a new game as being a flagship title

With the amount of money Sony has invested in the developer, we are guaranteed a sequel. I also couldn't care less if the game goes multi plat. If the game is still good, why would I care about people with a 360 enjoying the same game I enjoy on my PS3? infact almost everyone who has killzone 2 is connected online (shortly after it broke 1 million sales it broke 1 million unique registered accounts... and with continual DLC atleast for now and the fact that the first killzone had an online comunity after two- three years (last time i ever logged into the game) after the game launched makes me think that like always gabenewellspie is just talking out his....um piehole

Wow, I honestly can't believe the stupidity on these forums. If a game sales are low, then the online community will also be low. Because the sales are so bad for this game this early then there is no point in buying it since there won't be people playing it. I don't play shooters for single player.
But no, you are right, I only play games that sell 4 million plus. Do you realize how stupid that sounds? Might want to actually think for a minute before you post.
funny....i played killzone just the other day and plenty of people were playing...and is still doing well...moving on...the game is really good in my mind, yes something to get used to but once you get used to it it is one good @$$ game...and fun online...i only stopped playing because of infamous and UFC but i will be back once i get money for those newmaps...because when i played it again everyone had the maps so i thought hey might as well just get the maps...

I'm enjoying Killzone 2. The number of copies it sells will not ruin my enjoyment of the game. In fact I will never buy a game based on sales numbers but rather the quality of it.

1.66 million sold WW= success NPD does not equal world wide sales.DBhova23Wow only 1.66 really I thought it would have sold more. Thats a pretty bad number to be WW.
Killzone 2 is was not a halo-killer, microsoft's non-stop milking of the franchise with low quality games and add-ons will ultimately kill it (halo wars, ODST, terrible DLC maps). If that doesn't do it, then maybe it'll be that there seems to be a dwindling number of average-skilled players playing the game. The only people who play halo 3 seem to be way too good at it, or really horrible and totally obnoxious... at least that's been my experience.
Anyways ultimately it's up to you. I find the best way to make decisions about buying games is playing the demo or hearing from your friends, but I guess everyone has their methods. If you like looking at sales to decide which games you buy then go ahead, but you might miss out on some pretty incredible games.
Also, despite what some people are saying, there are just as many matches available now on KZ2 as there were 2 months ago.
