Honestly this is right up there with saying Depth of Field is a downgrade.

How are more visual effects a bad thing, considering they're in the mountains I'd expect it to be a bit foggy/misty.

The gifs are way too blurry to tell. The fog in the first gif (via the link) looks very thick though. That could certainly be for performance, or it could have been an artistic choice.

If the bottom gif is the newer version, then I would agree it is an improvement. The have environmental elements like fog now.

Draw distance and the amount of detail in the distance ways heavy on the GPU. You can mask that detail with fog, motion blur, solar flares burning your eyes out. Pop in occurs because of this too.

It is used to mask things.
