I love using a physical controller as much as u do and will probably buy the Move as well as the Kinect, but soon enough controllers will be gone as technology advances, its hard to believe that but its an opening door.FatedX360
My guess is... People will pick this up, plug it in, be like "OMG this is teh awesome" for about a week or two and then be right back to the controller. As impressive as these tech demos are, they are making you jump through hula hoops to do things that would take a few presses of a keypad or a mouse. It is grossly inefficient interfacing and the user will be tired out before feeling mentally accomplished. When you turn off your Kinect to wind down from your gaming session and then come back to see your friend who is using a controller has unlocked twice as many achievements as you in your gaming session, you will know why. All this "Minority Report" flash looks spectacular on the big screen for a few seconds at a time. Actually picking it up, getting used to it and then using it will be a whole other ballgame. Unless you expect MMORPG gamers to look like NBA stars... Then I have nothing more to tell ya lol

Indeed, it is the only one that completely immerses you in the game in full 3D for your whole body and with full 3D interaction

It is like beeing in the game world, rather than using a pointing device that can track depth in just one place of your body (or two if you have two Move sticks)

There is no comparisson really, Kinect is indeed the new generation of immersion in games and controls, that is by default

I find it ironic that people who were saying a controller without vibration was a step backward are now saying that controllerless gaming is the future.

Shewgenja

Kinect big feature is the full body immersion and interaction in full 3D in a game world, not the hands free

You can still use a controller with Kinect, and still get full 3D body immersion and interaction in any game that supports it

And the fact that you can have 6 players at once and play allgames without any additional equipment !!!!

Well, what does it do that every other camera in the world can't? It's not tracking anything other than visuals. It's not measuring anything else.

The ability of advanced interactive A.I. being able to recognize and respond on the actions of the individual thats performing in front of the camera

By tracking visuals and sound? There are already games that do this.

The tech behind kinect is kind of cool, but at this point in time it just isn't mature enough, almost how the Virtual Boy was way ahead of its time.

Imo, Kinect (at this state) =

i agree on the last note .... Kinect isn't about gaming at all, it's different tech. which isn't new but a more refind and improved Eyetoy .... i have to give credit for MS for brining it up.

but if it's not about gaming, why discussing it here???? why do some lemmings keep mentioning Natal and its games as if they are the next generation of gaming ???

Not the way Kinect does it, what game can use your own body's full range of motion combined with a peripheral's ability to map your major joints for the software to use as its controller, your the reference and every movement you make will be replicated in whatever way the game developer intended your movements to be for the character you control or for the A.I. that was programmed to respond correctly to your gestures. Its not gonna be perfect, i admit that, there is no way Kinect will achieve perfection. I guarantee that Kinect (& Move) will have a few flaws on release, and gaming is just one side of Kinect.

because i keep reading posts about how "Kinect is the end of 360's lifetime" or "M$ just made me switch to the PS3 bc of Kinect, I'm selling my xbox bc of it, OMFG this makes the Xbox kiddie bc of freakinz Knectimal LULZ", which is not true. Kinect is simply an add-on, you don't need it to play a 360, its simply there for people interested in it.

So there's been alot of people saying Xbox will fail bc of Kinect. maybe. maybe not. but what if it becomes successful? i know a bunch of people are going to say..."No not a chance." Fact is....this IS the technology of the future. The way we advance in technology these days, it'll be sooner or later that millions of electronics will have similar more advanced tech. Touchscreens have been making waves this past decade and have u noticed how almost everything out there is "touch sensitive" now? Like it or not, controllers will be obsolete in the future, hopefully not anytime soon but they will be. Oh and guys...Kinect is not replacing the Xbox controller...Games that were designed for the controller just that...Games designed with kinect is just that. Don't expect to play CoD or Halo on Kinect, its common sense but then again System Wars intellect skips the common sense phase all together. Kinect probably won't be breaking any ground this year, but in the following years, expect the tech to go further than any of you thought, point of the thread is, Kinect is a small glimpse of the next decade in technology.

P.S. - THIS SIMPLY ISN'T ABOUT GAMING. Its technology in general.

FatedX360
What? Didn't we already know this with the Wii? Credits should go to Nintendo for making motion controller popular. Nintendo provides us a glance of the future gaming technology, not Microsoft or even the eyetoy.

Who is going to stand 2 metres away from their computer to use a user interface?

Seriously there are far better innovations in user interface than this. Take the SixthSense wearable gestural UI for example.

Unless we enter the realm of VR, touch technology or gloved technology is superior than pure camera based technology in that it provides some sort of liminal interaction point, as well as feedback cues.

It's less precise, more limited and more expensive than traditional solutions. It's a step back not forward. I suppose the same could be said about gamepads in relation to KB/M, but Kinect also seems like the least comfortable control method so not sure what it's supposed to have going for it.

Not. While Kinect is a glimpse of the future, and is probably the technology we'll use in the future years, it's waaaaaaay ahead of it's time. PSMove is not a glimpse of the future, but it will definitely work better than Kinect. I bet that a Wii remote with motion+ will work better than Kinect. Especially if you're playing with 4 people. The one advantage of Kinect: You don't have to worry about getting out and cleaning up controllers for a group of people.

Microsoft already has plans for Kinect+controller/peripheral games, so there is a (slight) glimmer of hope that Kinect will involve more than just browsing menus or flailing your arms at colored balls. I can imagine playing a FPS with my plain-Jane controller with some additional Kinect-interface stuff, such as the voice recognition (imagine telling your AI squadmates to attack instead of Left-button -> sort through menu -> green button). Apparently they've been reluctant to bring it up to try to emphasize their camera tech and to differentiate themselves from the Wii and Move. Unfortunately, all that's done is bring the wrath of "hardcore" gamers.

Its going to be moderately successful period. But it sure as hell isn't the future. And Microsoft doesn't have the talent to make mega blockbuster titles. Neither does Sony really and that's what these devices need.

My life would change dramatically if controllers were no longer used in gaming. I'd lose a lot of weight, get better grades, and probably become great at golf.

What is wrong with you people! He is not saying Kinect is the future and microsoft is great and whatever, he's saying that the innovation of extreme motion sensing is going to catch on, whether we like it or not.

D1st0rtedFate
That's the problem. Technology will always push gaming. BUT not every technology is included. Virtual boy is an example. I don't think Kinect will do that much to gaming as to push it forward.

[QUOTE="110million"][QUOTE="Foliage-King"][QUOTE="KevinButlerVP"] yeah, it's nothing new... I don't think Kinect can even sense on the Z-axis

yes it can..... It has two lenses

What games have actually used that though? So far everything they show works on a 2D plane only, besides, it doesn't make too much sense to let you like walk back and fourth, thats just dangerous.

its actually what improves the speed, it doesn't just detect motion like the pseye but it can pick up on facial recognition and picking out all the body parts. Part of it is because it has the depth so when it sees the movement and the full body will be projected clearer for processing. Working solely on the 2d plain you've got process more to figure stuff out.

You just really missed the point of what Kinect could do. It really can do REAL TIME 3D MO-CAP. Here is the game, "Your Shape" which put you in VR world where you could interact with objects/UI and environment in 3D. It scans your body and displays your height, body dimensions, your body joints in 3D. There is no a single game out there which could do what Kinect can. Simply impressive:

Go watch the video I posted on top of yours if you missed it. It is by far the most advanced motion tech between the 3 out there. As for the games, this is only its first gen. Wait until 2nd or 3rd gen before devs could fully utilize its functions.

It is highly possible. I don't know why but Kinect just seems futuristic to me.:P Despite it being a "glofied Eyetoy" as many call it, I think it's really cool. Then again the only game I liked that they showed was Dance Central.:P

Unless Kinect is a big failure and MS decides to drop it. Otherwise, if it sells well, MS will integrate it with the next xbox and continue to make Kinect games for both next and current consoles until the 2nd generation of Kinect hardware arrives.

Kinect is far more advanced than Move or Wii devices, you can interact with the game world in full 3D, without holding sticks, that technology so far was used in Hollywood, with sensors in the wjole body to transfer the exact actor motion in the 3D programs

Now it is possible to do same with 2 cameras (one for depth, infrared) with Kinect

In short, it is the only one that you hold a virtual shield, sword and wave them easilly at any direction/depth and also be able to use kicks with your foot at any depth too

That is impossible with Move, to do the same you would need sticks in your head, both hands and feet for comparisson, just for one player too

Kinect is the only one that can be used for your whole body immersion in full 3D game, with Move you have to be on rails to use just one stick, since it could never map depth for the other hand without another stick and you would still not have depth mapped for the feet/head etc

Also Kinect can pick up the exact doby position, for example you could walk sideways or turn your side for defence, with Move that would not be recognized at all with full depth etc

The difference is night and day, Kinect is far more advanced in every way imaginable, has support for multiple players and has everything out of the one box, so people do not get confused and developers can use every single feature knowing that those with Kinect can use it all, unlike Move that no developer can know what people actually have

Just the fact that Kinect offers multiple gamers and hands free gaming with full body immersionout of the box, will make it sell like hotcakes imo

As for comparissons with Move and Eyetoy, those are a joke, these devices have a 100% different principle they are working with, Move tracks a glowing ball for depth with a camera, and you can hit in 2D style other parts of the screen wih your hands and feet that do not have a stick, without depth, maybe used in games on rails, so the 2D plane is static and you do not need depth mapping

While Kinect tracks your whole body in full 3D, so you can do anything, the possiilities are limiteless

Maybe, maybe not but this isn't simply about gaming. Its about its tech.

Which isn't terribly innovative really, its using the Playstation Eye in a different way, its interesting they were able to record joints and detect motion through that, this is new to Kinect,

No, it's not. PC Webcam games have been doing this for at least 10 years now. All MS is doing is increasing the camera resolution and allowing it to determine more parameters. The general idea, however, is nothing new.

Dude you have 360 in your name. No one is going to take you seriously now. Kinect is an idea of what the future might be. But not for games. Do you really see people flailing around the room in the future? Playing dodgeball and changing car tires?

The only thing I see is holographic ultra realistic graphics. Theres still going to be a controller. If not, its not going to be a freakin camera. Probably some telekenisis brainwave stuff. NOT KINECT.

[QUOTE="Mogotoo"]

Have we figured out how to walk?

Silverbond

Or turn around and still be able to see the screen?

Maybe you guys should have designed the thing...it seems like you could figure out how to fix that...................................

If Kinect is a glimpse of the future for gaming, then the future looks bleak.

I would purchase Kinect day one if they had say a popular shooter(Halo) that let me use a controller and Kinect at the same time. It would be really neat to see what developers could come up with if they implemented their games like that, but have it optional at the same time.

FatedX360

Its a cool technology. It is. I won't argue that. But its not for gaming. The tech won't let you play a shooter, or practically any action game more efficiently than you can with a controller. Why would I want to play Burnout Paradise with my hands as a steering wheel while I could play the game better with a controller. Its cool in what it can do, but as a gaming device, its a waste of money.

NOT KINECT.

Kinects needs a good 2 more years of development before it's ready IMO. M$ rushing it, as you cans see with the pathetic mini game collections they have.

Ok I apologize but its just easy to assume people are fanboys when theyre defending a system and they have that system in their name. Thats all.

So, all future games won't have buttons, will be 2-player at most, and will have to be played standing up?

Lucky for us, you're absolutely wrong.

[QUOTE="110million"][QUOTE="FatedX360"] Maybe, maybe not but this isn't simply about gaming. Its about its tech.br0kenrabbit

The general idea, however, is nothing new.

yaaa kinect is not the same as a normal webcam

Your basing your comment on if everything in the future will be have Kinect's limitations. You sir, are wrong. There will be more advanced hardware and software from other companies and developers. Saying that everything thats similar to Kinect in the next decade or so will have the same limitations is dumb. Kinect is just a small tiny step compared to what other things will be capable of in the next 10 years or so.

Kinect will do ok, but it will still depend on the games and what else M$ can do with the technology. The price is still too high right now. They will need to get the hardware below $100 and start releasing some innovative games for $40 & $50 if they want it to start taking off.

As I said in my post, it's the same essential idea, just with improved tech.
