All I can say is that EVERY SINGLE developer out there is laughing at the MGS4 dev team. It is HILARIOUS that they are standing behind these comments. 50GB for a game! ROFLMFAO!MadExponent

what I find sad is that in this generation for some odd reason everyone is thinking that more GB's in some way means better quality games. there are games on XBLA and PSN that are only in the MB's range and are better than some of these 6gb --> +20gb monsters. :(LEGEND_C4A
but mgs = quality, so i mean having 50 gb is interesting because something's filling it up. so its losless audio or whatever. personally id rather have some bonus features but...
As much as I love the MGS series (buying the 80GB PS3 MGS4 pack on day 1) I find this incredibly hard to believe. Especialy since PC games still take less than 10Gigs of HDD Space (99% of PC games these day install all content from the disk and only require the disk in the drive as a security check).
I can see how the Blu-ray argument is going to evolve here:
360 Fans "Ha ha! BR isn't even big enough. Have fun changing disks!"
PS3 Fans "Well had it been on DVD you would have had to change disks 7 times. We only have to do it once at the most!"
The truth is that MGS4 is taking up a ludicrous amount of space for some seriously insane reason. There is NO reason for it to be that big. Uncompressed audio takes a lot of space, but that is still no excuse. There is something crazy going on here, and now I am just excited to find out exactly WHAT is on that disk. 40+ hours of behind the scenes video? Entirely possible
[QUOTE="MadExponent"][QUOTE="GundamGuy0"][QUOTE="shoeman12"]thats just ridiculous. it's because of all the uncompressed audio, if it wasn't for that it would probably fit on 2 dvd's.f50p90
It might even fit on one.
It would fit on 1 VERY easily. Pfft I swear to God. Crap like this only makes me hate Sony even more. I am not an idiot, but Sony is treating me like one.
Sony isn't making the game though?
Sure they aren't making it, but they are surely sending out marching orders to their closest devs to make it a point to show that "Bluray is teh needed". That annoys me.

I don't need to. I am not saying that I am not looking forward to MGS4. I am. It just chaps my ass that they are ramming Bluray down our throats.

Yeah, Kojima seems to be going out of his way to make a point about blu-ray. Why not compress the audio, and add an option to use the original Japanese voices? Perhaps this won't make the game as immersive to some, but a lot of people prefer to hear dialogue in the "original" language instead of using a sometimes corny English dub. I mean c'mon, why is uncompressed audio that necessary? There will be people playing this game on SDTVs, and yet it's that important to Kojima to make sure the audio is uncompressed? If you ask me, there are more important things to worry about than just how lossless the audio is...

Corny english dub? David Hayter is famous because of this game. Why would anyone want to play MGS in Japanese? Just my thoughts
i can't imagine there are still people that didn't read this in all the other topics...
uncompressed sound and cgi take up space.. simple..
A lot of the storage capacity is being used up by the lossless audio Kojima is craming into the game. It is said to be so clear you can hear the "crackling" in the voices from the voice actors.
Lossless audio is storage-eating monster. Anyone with a nice surround sound system will enjoy it though. Can't wait for this game.

was 9/11 an inside job?
I am not a conspiracy theorist...why would 9/11 have anything to do with this?

I have no problem with Bluray for video, but for them to tell me that video games NEED it is just crazy.

blu ray has to beat dvd first. by the time that happens (not for years) digital distrubution will be ready and will beat it.
anyone who has REAL computer knowledge should find this comical
you would have to really go out your way to fill up 50gigs for a single game
audioaxes
Agreed. This just seems to be...well, inefficient? If you can get the graphics, physics, and gameplay on to a DVD for Crysis, then compare capabilities to MGS4. Well, either they have hours of lossless audio (dialogue) or extreme inefficencies. If this is true, this just makes me think were going to see an interactive book. Doesn't mean its bad folks, dont read it that way, but that is what it will be. I personally think its cool, as long as it doesn't draw out Xenosaga style.
That is truly pathetic that 50 gigs is not enough for all the cutscenes Kojima wanted to incorporate. And you know it is cutscenes that are taking up all that space right?

Blu Ray has to beat DVD, Digital Dist, Flash Memory, and possibly Holography to become a 10 year format. I like Blu Ray but knowing the cost I put(still putting) into it to really show its capabilities, I know for a fact it won't be mainstream for a long time.

na...cutscenes arent cgi theyre in game. that means they take up a lot less space.

Still has the audio component, which takes up the most space if lossless (by far). I really wonder how many people will ever have the capability to truly enjoy lossless 7.1, and in the long run, show if it was worth the 50 gigs.

true.. well as far as i know it's all made with the game engine. but uncompressed audio wil fill a blu ray easely
I cant wait for this game. :D Although to be honest, i imagine they've been very lazy with their content, like Resistance. HUGE amount of space taken up, yet could anyone see where all this stuff is? I think they've just stuck everything on there, completely uncompressed, with no measures taken to save space.Ninja-Hippo
That is the downsize of Blu Ray when DVD still exists. It can make lazy developers. Plenty of upsides to BR, but this is a potential downsize.

Please notice I didn't specifically say MGS had a "corny English dub"; I simply said a lot of people prefer the original Japanese voice tracks to their English counterparts in games, movies, and anime among other things. I personally would prefer English in MGS, but purists may or may not.
that proves that this game CANT be made on 360 unless they use 5 discs for game and an extra 1 for online for those 360 people claiming mgs will come to the 360
One of the earliest CD-ROM based PC games I owned was Might and Magic World of Xeen. It was a whole whopping 2 CDs in size... only it wasn't. The game itself was only 30 megabytes or so, but when you talked to certain NPCs the game used audio CD tracks for their dialogue. This was the case with a lot of early CD-based games; the extra space was used for things like uncompressed music and dialogue, another example was Tomb Raider, where all the game's music, and the audio for cutscenes, were simply CD audio tracks you could play in any CD player.
The point is, without those audio tracks (or compressed versions), the game could have fit on a single CD several times over. It takes developers a while to find proper ways to utilize the space when a new format comes along. I'd say that is still the case with Blu-ray. However given the limited read speed and small memory capacity of the PS3 we may not see any significant use of Blu-ray until next gen, at which point I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony pushing yet another new format.

The small memory capacity of the PS3 as compared to what? I swear to god, if you say anything other than "a PC," I'm going to scream.
As far as limited read speed, this has already been debunked. On the 7 discs that would be required (at the very least) for this game (considering the MS junk on the DVD's, it could potentially just as easily be 8, or even 9, due to the necessity of repeating basic content on each disc) the Xbox 360's read speed would be suffering tremendously because unlike Blu Ray it's not constant. The Blu Ray drive is only better because the disc is full, meaning it's going to read as quickly on the outside as it is on the inside. On a DVD-9 it's going to read faster on the outside edge of the disc and slower on the inside, dramatically so, meaning that on a set of full DVD-9's your average is going to be pummelled.
Basically, MGS4 on Blu Ray is going to be significantly faster on average than it would have been on DVD's. The variable read-speed and maximum speed on the DVD-9 is only an advantage when the game is NOT filling the disc to the brim. I.E. if we're talking a 5-6 gig game, here, you may be getting somewhere because the devs can put most if not all of the game data on the outer layers and the most necessary and frequently accessed stuff there too to get a slight speed gain over Blu Ray's constant read speed.
As though read speed has anything to do with the success of a format, especially considering how much of a bonus constant reading speed is for a high-capacity disc format.
Read Naughty Dog's comments on Blu Ray data streaming as implemented in Uncharted Drake's Fortune. Find me an example of that on 360 or on any DVD-9 format, and you'll win a prize.
The uncompressed audio in a great number of PS3 games that actually have it (many first-party titles already do), the audio usually takes a little more than the full capacity of a DVD-9 and nearing towards a potential amount of 14 gigs. Now, on a 25 gig disc, this is significant. But considering that we're talking about a 50 gigabyte, dual-layer Blu Ray disc, in all probability, the audio is taking up between 15-20 gigabytes of storage space. At the very, absolute, holy-s***ing most, we're talking maybe 25-30. I mean, if these guys REALLY went totally ballistic.
That still leaves 20-35 gigabytes of actual game data. Cry me a friggin' river, this is still potentially more actual, solid game material than the average 360 owner will ever meet on a 360 game in his lifetime.
But this is entirely speculative. I'm just saying, it's unreasonable to expect that something like 40-45 gigs of this disc is being filled up with 100% uncompressed audio. It's totally asinine.
The region-free audio is gone, the CGI is gone. It's 100% English audio and even the ONLINE and SINGLEPLAYER portions have been segmented on a 50 gig disc. He said compression took place and that they STILL had to cut things from the game to get it to fit. I wish you guys would take this stuff seriously. That's still an absolutely massive game and MINUS audio it would, in all probability, fill a single-layer Blu Ray disc to the brim + 1 DVD/single layer Blu Ray (whatever they're housing Online on, they didn't actually say).
