I'm Canadian, of mostly British ancestry and I prefer Japanese-made, and Japanese-style games. Kojima needs to stuff his wad and concentrate on making games again.
I don't know why people are getting pissed at him. He's not telling Japanese developers to lose their identity and become Western, he's saying to look for other sources of inspiration. This has been the first gen that this subject has been spoken about openly so the results have been kind of mixed. I used to love Japanese games and I still like the idea of them, it's just that they really need to evolve the fundamental building blocks of their games.
They need to be more cinamatic, have lots of blood, guns. That is what they mean by more western. Such an inspiration to gaming everywhere.

Yeah, they shouldn't take any cues from the indie scene where actual innovation is occuring, only COD style AAA games by greedy publishers. By the way some of you are talking you'd think that they only kind of games that come from the west are shooters. That's just idiotic.
Yes lets look to generic shooters for inspiration.. I totally see where this is going.

SO your saying ignore XCOM: Enemy unknown, Europa Universalis, Mount & Blade, Assassins' Creed, Heroes of Might and magic, Dark Messiah of might and Magic, Civilization V, Baulders Gate, Planescape: Torment, Blood Bowl, Xenonauts, Portal, World of Tanks, Space Pirates and Zombies etc. Not a single shooter in that list, all unique games.
Both GTA4 and MGS4 are better than SMG considering that SMG is on the Wii, a poor and lacking hardware and not meant to be compared to other games and consoles. I mean, GTA4 and MGS4 win in every category like sound, graphics, story etc besides platforming. Nintendo said it themselves, they can't compare themselves to likes of other developers, theyre not as advanced. Imagine SMG on the 360 and PS3.
Back on topic. Yes, Japanese developers do need some GOOD western influences, and not just what they THINK is good. Kojima and a few others got it right.

Oh, I was looking at Gamerankings which doesn't skew how much each site's opinion is worth. I never understood how Metacritic gets away with that...
Both have uneven review numbers though and allow fanboys sites on the list. It's also not that hard to make up a "nice" website and shove a review of one game in it under 10 seconds to get qualified either. But yes Gamerankings in someways is better. o one here uses it but me though.
