Guys, I've figured it out. The Onion has bought Konami in a silent partnership. It's the only thing that remotely makes sense.

Hard to watch the classics go out like that. Hopefully Konami can be cool about this. Even if they don't want to pursue traditional video gaming anymore, maybe they can license these IPs out to studios that will do them some justice. Wishful thinking, but it would be nice.
