We haven't heard much about the next entry in the ultra-creepy Silent Hill franchise, but thanks to a recent interview in Electric Shock magazine with the game's chief director, Masashi Tsuboyama, we've got more info. The biggest tidbit from the discussion? Konami could be planning to make the game exclusive...provided the PS3 sells better.

A few things are pretty eye-catching, here. First of all, Konami and the team looked closely at all the consoles and found that none were able to fully support their idea for Silent Hill 5. Well, none except for the PS3. Tsuboyama said Blu-Ray is a "very necessary asset" in their development process, and he believes the system's processing power is "far beyond" that of the other consoles. Currently, they have no plans to bring the game multiplatform, although they may be forced down that road if PS3 sales don't improve.

We might be able to expect more info at E3, but for now, all of this is pretty encouraging for PS3 owners. It's another major developer saying Sony's system is head-and-shoulders above the competition in terms of power and potential, and if sales get better, we might be seeing more exclusives in the future.

Good for the Sony fans, doesn't really matter to me considering Xbox owners mostly got 2 and 4, just to make money. Why didn't Xbox get 3 anyway?

I'm not a big fan of Silent Hill anyway, and atomospheric game that doesn't deliver the scares.

It is a sad day indeed, when developer who want to make exclusives for the PS3 are forced to move to other systems because it has sold so poorly

Silent Hill 5 Going Multi-Platform?

Silent Hill 5 (working title) has yet to be shown or announced in any official capacity, but rabid fans have been hanging off of every bit of speculation since Silent Hill 4: The Room shipped in 2004. Masashi Tsuboyama, chief designer of the next Silent Hill project, added more fuel to the fire in a recent interview with Dengeki PlayStation, which comes to us in English via aptly-named fan-site, SilentHill5.net.

When asked about the prospect of a multi-platform release, Tsuboyama noted that previous entries had been released across several platforms, but acknowledged that it was back when they "were working at DVD level with no HD needed." Though he praised the PlayStation 3 for its internal hard drive and use of the Blu-ray format ("a great asset to the developer in the future"), Tsuboyama said that "multi-platform will be discussed," but that nothing was certain at this point.

Tsuboyama claimed that the Xbox 360 "is definitely a candidate" despite weak sales in Japan, and though he congratulated Nintendo for its success with the Wii, he didn't think it was necessarily the best match for the Silent Hill franchise. "This by no means says we will not consider the idea," he added, "but the general opinion is that Wii is for family games, and I'm sure the fans don't play Silent Hill with their grandma!"

Best not to underestimate the hardcore, Wii-playing grandmothers. Tsuboyama slyly closed the interview with a non-denial denial about a potential E3 appearance for Konami's survival-horror series: "I'm not saying Silent Hill 5 will definitely be there, but you should be!" Mark the calendars for mid-July, folks.

Whatever, if Konami wants to keep close to a platform which is doing badly they'll find their finances going down the toilet. They'll manage then to somehow squeeze their games onto a DVD9 and won't be shy of taking the money as well.

But Silent hill has been always multiplataform,I doubt SH5 is going to be a Ps3 exclusive.Maybe the Pc or the x360 get a watered down port but nah Silent hill is not going to be exclusive.

I can't wait for that argument to become INvalid - when sales figures begin to show the declining rather than growing PS3 sales

Konami and Sony have long been in bed with each other, but given the PS3 sales... we might see some threesome action soon. very soon. We all know the dev companies are money whores, and well quite frankly, there currently isn't any money in the foreseable future with the PS3.

People still believe this talk from developers? They just say so because Sony wants them to say it. The same was said for VF5 in the beginning. We all know how that worked out. They are just trying to make people believe that the Xbox 360 can't play games. Judging from the responses here I say they are achieving their goal. It's got to be a pain to be so easily fooled. I bet SH5 goes multiplatform not too long from now. Just like previous 'only possible on PS3' titles.

Not a huge Silent Hill fan. I did like the first 2 games in the series. Never played them on the XBox. As far as I'mn concerned, they can keep this game exclusive for the PS3. Silent Hill was never a big seller. This game probably won't come out until 2009 anyways if it was exclusive on the PS3. They can take their time, I don't care.

Why is it a big deal to spread out the game data on a few discs? Konami knows how considering the first metal gear solid for ps1 had multiple discs. Instead of trying to compress everything on to a single dvd9, spread it out on 2-3 of them and then you dont have constraints in capacity. I am also sure that a single blueray disc costs more to produce than several dvd's.

Come to think of it....dont developers program their games on PC'S that emulate the functions of the console? A version of mgs and ff and sh and any other game can be made to work on pretty much any other platform. Just goes to show how good the programmers are.

Likely this is the situation.  Silent Hill 5 will come on a Blu-Ray disc.  Therefore it cannot be played on the 360.  Furthermore, as we all now know, it is obvious the PS3 is simply a "movie player", the extent of the "gaming" interactivitiy of Silent Hill 5 will be to press play at the main menu, and then eject the game after you have finished watching one long cutscene...lol.

thank you for posting I was just about to search for this

This is the original interview that has been rehashed and twisted all over the net, you can see that his response is more ambiguous but more suggestive that a 360 version is likelyu

Linkified for the lazy if it hasnt already happened. I'm glad you put the site before making us read your post. The second I saw that "ps" was in the link, I stopped reading. Any real news about the 360 would not come from a playstation dominant site.

Actually that is no longer the truth. Also when they were (past tense) doing the same it was only because the 360 had shipping shortages that ran all the way through the end of april. The ps3 did not have any such issues.

Yeah but it isnt really doing that badly, no more so than the 360 at the same point in it's life

It's too bad he, like most people at Konami seems to be under the impression that because Wii has mostly games for the family there can be nothing M rated on the system. The Godfather is all ready out, Scarface and Manhunt 2 are on the way and Capcom is bringing at least two Resident Evils to the system. I'm not arguing that Wii is the place to be for more mature type games, but it would be cool to see what they could do with something like SH on the system. Even if it wasn't 5, just a spinoff would be cool. My guess is the bigger issue is actually hardware power, one thing SH is known for in addition to great gameplay is great graphics, something that won't be achieved on the Wii.

We have not decided the console yet... Silent Hill 1 to 3 have all been multi platform appearing on either Playstation 3, Xbox or PC. This was when we were working at DVD level with no HD needed. Mutli-Platform will be discussed but nothing is certain yet... The Xbox 360 is definatly a candidate.

Linkified for the lazy if it hasnt already happened. I'm glad you put the site before making us read your post. The second I saw that "ps" was in the link, I stopped reading. Any real news about the 360 would not come from a playstation dominant site.

Agreed. I was about to mention this article since it seemed like the OP had a link talking about this interview, but there was no confirmation at all which platform SH5 would go to.

MrBlackbeard
Silent Hill 5 producer mentions nothing regarding power and said it may go multiplat if PS3 sales dont pick up.

I really don't care if it's exclusive, just as long as I can play it on PS3. Either way it seems like the PS3 version will probably be the better one if it does go multiplat since the 360 would get a port.

Just like previous 'only possible on PS3' titles.FearlessSpirit

Sorry, you are in no position to talk about it...I'm sure you never made a game in your life..ill take all the devlopers words rather then some dude on a message board...lol..i guess all Devlopers so far that compliment about how space is great and ps3 is powerful is all gettin paid by sony....

Of course you'll take the devs word for it, because he says something positive anout the PS3. Now if it was negative, it would be bu bu bu they don't know what theu are talking about. You guys say any dev that says 360 is better are on MS's payroll, hypocrites.

X360 is still low sale in Japan.  PS3 is three time than X360 sale in Japan.

I can't wait SH5 on PS3, I'll get SH5 import blu-ray games on free region PS3 system. That's why I care Japan developer games. for example Capcom, Square-enix, Konami, Tatio, Sege...etc there important for me games.
