I know that many many people are big fans of KOTOR, and claim that it is their favorite starwars game(s)..

Am i the only one that was bored to hell with this game? My friends went ape **** for it when it released. I even bought the game to try to get into it. But this game was just so boring, it wasn't bareable.

Mass Effect seems to be set up the same as KOTOR in gameplay. I really hope the try to appeal to gamers like me, that want a little more than glorified turn-based combat.

PS.......I am a Lemming so this isn't some fanboy rant....

I hope they don't try to make the game appeal to people lik you, the original KOTOR was amazing and you're in the minority that disagrees.

I think they would rather appeal to the majority who enjoyed the game than to the minority, like you, who disliked it.

Tough luck.

Maybe this kind of game is not for you? Bioware has made plenty of games with the same formula, and they all were huge hits.

Yep..KotOR had a great story and well-developed characters..if you didn't like it, just give up on the genre altogether. Or at very least stick to Action RPGs like Diablo.

I agree. It's one of the few games I've played 5-6 times over because I love it so much.

Well, I love RPGs..I've been playing through Balders Gate, Planescape Torment, Ultima...but KOTOR didn't seem interest me at all, and it was mainly due to the fact that it is set in the Star Wars universe.

I'm glad Bioware are making a new Sci-Fi RPG that is completely devoid of Star Wars crap, I know there are a lot of fans out there, but I really don't like it.

If you thought KOTOR was boring, I don't see how you would like other RPGs.Mass_Effect

I don't see how it's even remotely possible..unless you're a JRPG-only fan.

The universe honestly had little bearing on my enjoyment of the game. At the time I picked it up, I literally knew nothing about the Star Wars universe other than what's common knowledge in pop-culture..but I still absolutely loved every minuite of the game.

Edit: Damn, I keep getting "Forbidden" errors in my posts. Anyone know why?

Well, it is possible. Am I not allowed to have an opinion now?

The story didn't seem spectacular to me, the universe (I've said) I dislike. The combat system really wasn't very good, and the Jedi training put me off to a degree, I like keeping my character perfect, and it wasn't. All this made the game less enjoyable to me than other Bioware RPGs, and I had such high hopes for the game (so high, I bought it on the day it came out).

I never said you couldn't have an opinion..I just said it's hard for me to imagine a RPG fan (ESPECIALLY a WRPG fan) to dislike the game.

The plot had a couple RPG clichés but I found it to generally be top-notch by RPG standards. Character development is a particularly strong point of the game, too.

You complain about the combat system..but didn't you just say you've played through Baldur's Gate and other games with a similar combat system? Sure there's noticible differences..but the system at its core is something most of the more hardcore RPG gamers have become quite familiar with.

Not sure what you mean about not being able to keep your character "perfect.." are you refering to your picking up feats that aren't particluarly useful after you get your "Jedi powers?"

I had a friend who felt the same way about KOTOR until I convinced him to give it more time. I'd say the most frustrating thing about both of them is how long you have to go before you become a Jedi. It gets much better after you get your lightsaber and force powers.

And I'd like to know too?  What did the poster mean by keeping a character "perfect"?

Thank you.  Finally, someone else who agrees with me.  I've been saying this ever since the first KOTOR came out.  Yes, it had wookies, tuskens, and lightsabers, but it never really felt like a true Star Wars game.  No tie-in to the two trilogies, so I never felt as drawn-in as I probably should have.  Why not make it 100 years before Phantom Menace so at least you can feel like it has more to do with the Prequel Trilogy?

It's just expanding the Star Wars universe, that's all. I loved the first one, but didn't like the second one as much. Even still, I loved running around on the different planets seeing different sides to the same universe the movies are based on.

I do. As an ex-star wars fan I have always been interested in Star Wars backstory, I mean many many years back in time like KOTOR. Even though they arent that official its more interesting than play the totally milked trilogy story again and again and again and again. BioWare dared to do something new and they succeeded imo.

It's possible.  I can definitely see how KOTOR's style is not for everyone.  The beginning sequence on Taris was kind of boring and I did think the game lacked true depth of gameplay.  I'm a big fan of Bioware -> Baldur's Gate 2 was one of my favorite rpgs ever, but I just don't rate KOTOR as high.  It's decent, but I did get a little bored with it as well.  And most people here know me as somewhat of an XB/PC fan, so I'm not trying to flame fans of the game.

Firstly, yes you're one of the few that thought KOTOR was bring. Secondly, Mass Effect's gameplay is quite different from KOTOR's. KOTOR was basically a cleaver Active Time Battle fought, turn based RPG. Mass Effect is an Action RPG with realtime combat.

Thanks again for the wonderful contribution to the discussion  Yes, Mass Effect plays totally differently from KOTOR. Or, at least, it's a bit more action packed. You still have the ability to pause time and direct your squad mates before engaging in battle. It looks really promising.

I loved KOTOR but the worst part was the end when you realise that every lightside/ darkside choice you had made during the game was utterly pointless as one question actually decided the ending.

I'm not sure how you feel the gameplay is going to be the same/

KOTOR used automated combat via a "dice-rolling" system... Mass Effect's gameplay will use tactical combat, it's a straight action-RPG.

KOTOR's conversations were on a usual "tree" system...

Mass Effect's conversations use the right analog stick to indicate the desired "gist" of the response

I had the same problem with Fable. To go through the game and realize that you could effectively "BUY" being good or evil was quite sad. KOTOR wasn't that bad on the good/evil light/dark problem compared to Fable.

I don't understand how you've managed to miss the two demonstrations that have been released. Please look up the game before bashing it with your uninformed opinion.

And really, if combat is the main thing you care about in RPG's I doubt the genre is for you. Cause there is a lot more to KOTOR than just glorified turn-based combat.

[QUOTE="cakeorrdeath"]I loved KOTOR but the worst part was the end when you realise that every lightside/ darkside choice you had made during the game was utterly pointless as one question actually decided the ending.mythrol

it affects how much your force powers cost. :)

And which armors/robes you could wear.

Still really annoyed me. And Even then you just had to be a little bit dark or a little bit light. The level of Light/Darkness didn't matter.

I had the same problem with Fable. To go through the game and realize that you could effectively "BUY" being good or evil was quite sad. KOTOR wasn't that bad on the good/evil light/dark problem compared to Fable.

Same here. It effectively nullified all of your efforts. Thing is, taking that out would've increased the replay value of the game. You'd play through as a "good guy", then start over as a "bad guy" to see what the differences were... That's what I did with KOTOR. (FTR, Evil > Good - got a giddy delight being evil to people in that game).

Kotor was an instant classic. Hopefully Mass Effect will follow in its footsteps.

[QUOTE="ironwarrior2"]Yeah, KOTOR was verying boring unless you are in a certain state of mind, if you get my drift. :wink:cakeorrdeath

No I don't get your drift.

It means if you are not turned on by the game, it's not for you. Obviously ironwarrior gets turned on by KOTOR.
