He already is whiny and unlikable. I don't want him to mope around all day being sad, but a little character growth would have been nice.

A character without flaws is an awfully boring character. If he always did the right thing, it would basically make his character less unique. I don't understand what is wrong with having a tragic character. Even if you consider what Kratos says "whining," I don't see how it would be considered annoying.

There's a difference between having a flawed character and a character with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I like tragic characters, and I know more than a few things about writing them. Kratos has not been well-written outside of the original God of War.
