Swen Vincke said it's the biggest game Larian's ever done and they tripled the size of their studio.

And apparently they have a bunch of people acting as "Lore Police." Reading about them, I somehow imagined a bunch of uniformed dudes with yard-long canes going around cracking developers' desks, yelling "that's not canon!"

This will be BG3 in name only. Larian's writing and character building is really weak, two of the biggest attractions of the BG games.

Expect a renamed Divinity 3. What a waste.

so you want bioware to make it? who are one of the worst developers today?

come on my friend. only larian can do BG3.

Why would they put a link in their video if their game's website isn't even up? Didn't had to be so misleading.

You still don't understand the meaning of the word. I know its common for gamers to be overly dramatic about everything but there are times where some semblance of reasonable conclusions can be made.

Wait for Obsidian to finish what they're working on and give it to them. There's no rush with such an important franchise. Larian are massively over-rated and just aren't equipped to tackle a project like this.

Actually a CDPR B Team would do a better job at BG3 than the best Larian can muster up. They will literally just make another Divinity and call it BG3.

While I do enjoy the combat in Divinity, I will say that I don’t believe this franchise is a good fit for this developer. What made Baldur’s Gate so good was the storytelling the unforgettable NPC’s, and with BG2 what was probably the greatest and most fleshed out villain of all time.

Larian just has never shown the ability to worldbuild and tell stories and create characters at this level. I expect the gameplay to be good, but like another poster said above, this is most likely going to be Divinity 3 with a Forgotten Realms skin and 5th edition skill names pasted onto abilities.

That’s just not good enough for this franchise. We are talking about one of the holy grails of gaming here. If they were going to do this they should have fully funded Obsidian and game them tech support and let them do it, or give the license to CDPR and let them make a isometric turn based game. Larian, while a good dev, is IMO the wrong choice here.

Larian could probably make one hell of a Warhammer/Warhammer 40k RPG though.

Well I enjoyed the BG series more because of the 'gamey' aspects actually. The fun interpretation of d&d (yea, turn based combat would have been preferred) the well crafted encounters, crawling around in some cool dungeons....not as much the writing, characters, plot and other "emotional engagements" which were ok at times, but cringe-worthy a little too often also.

I agree with this. They need to get the player more engaged in the story. Another thing as well -

Dragons.

Baldurs Gate done dragons properly. They are rare, extremely powerful with a sense of omnipotent timelessness. Compare it to something like Skyrim. where Todd Howard learned people were heavily requesting dragon. They over-saturated the game and turned them into a repetitive incidental recurring fight, using the exact same template over and over. Nothing was impactfull about them.

Or something like The Hobbit where An Unexpected Journey builds the concept of a great mythical creature sleeping in a mountain, only to be turned into a CGI snore fest in the next movies where it turns into Tom And Jerry.

Is better than this -

Baldurs Gate is one of the few times I remember dragons being done really well.

It sounds like Larian's BG3 will be right up your street then. I won't touch it till I read reviews but I'm far from optimistic. I agree on the turn based combat which for me is the only good thing Larian will bring to the series.

Agreed.

Baldurs Gate 1 and NWN 1 were great because of their engines - their writing and quest design weren't particularly interesting, but the Infinity and Aurora Engines enabled others to make some truly great games (Planescape Torment, The Witcher, etc.).

Baldurs Gate 2 isn't much different. It's a great game - the high watermark of generic high fantasy RPGs - but a lot of the appeal is from the detailed adaptation of DND's combat mechanics. The story is so-so (you're chasing an evil wizard, big whoop), and the NPCs are fine - so Larian shouldn't have too much trouble hitting the same tone.

Larian had plenty trouble making their own games hit any kind of tone. Divinity 1 and 2 are painfully generic and totally devoid of interesting scenarios and characters, IMO of course.

The BG universe is much more colourful and interesting with characters and places you actually remember. I'm not bashing on Larian for the sake of it, they make good games (though I think they ruined the second Divinity with the shielding mechanic) I just don't trust them to take over the BG series.

Like @evilross said above, Larian have shown literally nothing at all to indicate they are suited to taking on this kind of challenge. I predict this will be a game with reasonably compelling combat and will be utterly forgettable beyond that, not a fitting legacy for one of the most beloved RPG franchises of all time.

Please Please Please do not allow 3 foot tall characters to use swords and weapons that are taller than they are. A gnome using a katana was the worst part of BG or even better dual wielding 2 katana's.
