I've come to a tenative conclusion concerning which next gen system to buy. I've been researching for about two weeks now and put in a lot of time on this forum for information. If you see a flaw in my logic or something I have overlooked in making this decision, please point it out. This is a fairly big investment for me and I'd rather not get ripped off because I didn't have all the facts.

I've decided on the PS3 for the following reasons:

I am not a super hardcore gamer, I typically enjoy sport games (EA and 2K), historic and modern fps, and the occasional well-made and well-reviewed blockbuster type game. I'd imagine buying about 3 or 4 games a year with Madden, FIFA, and a couple others as the staples year to year. I don't really anticipate playing online very much at all.

With that said, the availablegames are currently lacking on the PS3, but taking into account where the system is in its lifespan (10 months old) and where the 360 was at 10 months, upcoming releases, and recent performance of multiplat games (Tiger Woods 08 scoring better on the PS3), I think the PS3 game library will be very solid and easily meet my needs.

I watch a lot of movies with my lady and friends and the blu-ray as well as the PS3's ability to seemlessly upconvert standard dvds to high def is really attractive to me. Another thing with movie viewing is the fact that the PS3 is quiet and doesnt have a loud fan like the 360. Blu-ray seems to be ahead at the moment (although I admit I have no idea which format will win out) and if I'm gonna gamble on a new format why not take the one that is ahead.

I really like how the PS3 can update itself via internet and stay updated so easily. This leads me to believe the PS3 will be relevent for a long time and continue to improve. Paying an extra $150 for the more reliable (no RROD), more promising, and in the end more capable and multi-talented system seems like the right choice.

I think the 360 is a very good system and has the better gaming right now. Microsoft will always keep it competitive and the add ons available can make it identical to the PS3 in terms of capabilities but also cost. However, I see the PS3 as the all-in-one package and the system with the more promising future. It has the games I want as well as the features.

I know this will start some fanboyish arguing and what not, but this is my take on the two systems based on my situation. Please feel free to correct me and give your well-backed opinions as you see necessary. Thanks a lot, this forum has been a big help.

wrong choice IMO

360 is picking up pace atm

it's too early to get a PS3 IMO .. it would be better to wait for killer titles and a price drop

Buy whatever console has the most exclusives that you like the most whether they are out now or next year.

Don't use"What can you give me now" logic.

That's all the advice I can give you

I really don't see any big flaw in that , especially if you are planning on taking advantage of HD movies.

akif22

On the contrary, I see it as the PS3 that is picking up the pace based on the recent releases as well as those to be released in Oct. and Nov.

I've heard Madden has some quirks on PS3, but was still reviewed very well and I've been able to play it some, so I'm confident it is fine.

I'm not waiting till 09 to buy a system and I'm not buying two systems. So if the best system in 09 is gonna be the PS3 doesn't it make sense to buy the PS3?

Anyone that buys a console that has multiple sources of hardware failue isn't right in the head. What're you 360 fans going to do when the RROD (not the only issue with the system) warranty runs out? Frankly, I expect to be able to enjoy my console for longer than 3 years. To each his own, I guess.

QFT. The reason why the PS1 and PS2 lost the console war was because of hardware failures.

I was unaware that PS2 lost the console war, I still have one and they still make games for it...

Personally, I think you're on the right track, Andy. I went with the PS3 for many of the reasons you have stated. The hardware issues with the 360 are what really kept me from considering the console. I'm like you, a semi-casual gamer. I buy maybe 4 or 5 games a year, and I use mine as my primary movie player (much as I did my PS2). Blu-Ray has a wider variety of movies from which to select as well. You won't get nickel and dimed for services you may want, like online and downloadable content (DLC). Sony allows Devs to offer DLC for free, while MS requires they charge for it. You'll probably see a greater variety of quality games in different genres too. What game does the Xbox have to compete with Ratchet and Clank? Uncharted? God of War? Shooters aren't everything, afterall.

It's all a matter of taste. For 360 fans, they can't fathom why someone would chose the PS3, and vice versa where PS fans are concerned.

Everybody says wait, but there are good games out for it now, plus all of the mulitplats. If you get it now, you can enjoy it for the next few years and not drop the money on the 360. Not everybody has enough money for both.

Lots of people have said this many times, the best time to get a PS3 is when the package includes the sixaxis rumble, blue tooth headset, a hdmi cable, a real price drop, and when Home is up and running and when the games are out and about. So that could be sometimes in 2008, 2009, etc. They have more Blu Ray movies than games for the PS3, so if you're a movie lover and have a nice hdtv, then go ahead, since you don't really play games that much.

You obviously also have an Xbox 360 as well, so the Multi-plats you've probably already played on your Xbox. For someone that doesn't own multiple consoles, the PS3 and it's library are just fine.

I guess Game Informer was lying in their article about Devs trying to offer free content and MS not allowing it. And you're right, I don't own a 360. I don't know what I may have said that would lead one to believe otherwise. Why even post? Because I was letting the TC know that I was in a similar situation, with the same gaming desires, and came to the same conclusion. Why are YOU posting? You've obviously said nothing at all that relates to the thread itself. You found exception with something I said. How does that help the TC? You like calling the kettle 'black', don't you?

Indeed I do...but why buy a PS3 with some of the games of the 360 when you can have them all??? And the only games you are missing out right now on 360 are RFoM and Motorstorm and a couple others that are ok. All the other games are ports from 360 and don't look or plays as good. If I could have done it again I would have waited to MGS4 came out and then bought my PS3...who knows I might have been able to get 160g PS3 for the same price by the time it comes out at the pace sony is going right now with their systems.

I personally just bought a Xbox 360. I still haven't reached a final verdict yet. You obviously are leaning towards the Playstation 3 since the majority of your post talks about the console with only a small paragraph regarding anything relate to the Xbox 360. When I clicked on your post I assumed that you were heavily conflicted with the decision. But it looks like you already made a choice regardless of the games that come out for the system. I would say get a Playstation 3 because that is what you want. I can't even tell if you are "heavily" considering a Xbox 360.

You like how the system updates itself, Blue-Ray movies, reliable hardware, and the possible increase in the console's pace. Even though EA prioritizes first for the Xbox 360, sport games will still come to the PS3. Regardless of the situation the PS3 is in good games will come. Again; there is no point in putting up a argument to even get a Xbox 360; you clearly already chose which one you wanted. So go out, and spend about $500 or $600 for the system. Stop bothering people with aquestion(that obviously causes nonsense on system wars) when you already have decided which console to get...geez.

You made some very good points there. Comming from a hardcore gamer (and PS3 owner) the PS3 is a very wise decision. I personally do not even use the Blu-Ray player in it that much (i have mostly DVDs) and its still valuable to me. Some gamers think that just because Lair flopped (and it did.......bad) means that the system itself is bad. I cannot tell you how flawed that logic is. For starters, games flop all the time, there's no use denying it. And second, games like Warhawk and HS prove that the PS3 still holds its ground as far as a great machine. I liked your arguement and i hope you enjoy your purchase. ;)

I think the post title "last chance to change my mind" clearly indicates I was heavily leaning towards a decision and isn't misleading at all.

However, since so much of my decision was based on the input of this very forum I felt obligated to post again in an attempt to gather every last bit of info and allow usersanother chancesubmit their opinions and views as they saw fit.

Perhaps I could even return the favor by explaining my decision process to someone else in a similar situation surfing this forum for input as I am.

For the most part I appreciate the comments and input. Don't read a post or take the time to respond if you think it is bothersome or wasting your time.

[QUOTE="chulomex3"]360, anyone who gets a PS3 is not right in the head. Wait till 09 to get a PS3 by then it will have a decent library.msalz1

LOL NO!!!!! Everyone who gets a 360 is a poor deluded, mistaken fool. PS3 owners are wise indeed. The PS3 has the best features, online and games. Don't be converted.

Really what games?? I have a PS3 and I have 2 games cause the rest suck. And I pray that HS will be good....

You obviously also have an Xbox 360 as well, so the Multi-plats you've probably already played on your Xbox. For someone that doesn't own multiple consoles, the PS3 and it's library are just fine.

Because the 360 doesn't offer the games I want to play in the future. I don't put money into 401(k) so that I can befefit now, I'm looking to the future. The games I want to play don't come out on Xbox. I don't want to play Bioshock or Halo, I want to play Ratchet and Clank, and GT, and Metal Gear, and Twisted Metal, and God of War, and on, and on, and on. Frankly, Xbox just doesn't offer the games I want to play.

RROD is a good reason to pay the extra money to get a more reliable system. You're not making a bad choice.

why change your mind?

make your own mind with this question:

you like gaming for the short-run or long-run?

because, for short-term gaming, which means going after the system with the current best library, that means go buy the 360.

if you're going for long-term gaming, which means buy the system that has the best games still to come, go for the PS3, since all it's well known franchises that made the PS2 sell so much still aren't out.

if you just want to have fun buy the wii.

that's it.

ne to buy a 360 is not right it has crappy specs and all of its games are better on PC, PS3 is exclusive, but then again no sense arguing with most of the ppl in this world, bcz you will get nowhere, ppl are too stupid (or as you said not right in the head) i find it ironic how you speak of yourself the 360 is junk, and if you dont thinks so try just try and prove me worng use that brain of yours.

33% failure rate FTW...each 360 replaced counts as another 1 sold...hmm thats strange..

If you seldom play games then PS3 is fine. I have one and really like it so I can say you won't regret the purchase (unless of course you really want to see Transformers in HD, which I intend to :P ). I do however think you may have overlooked some of the 360s strong points.

It does seem to be getting the better multiplats in general, and it has gained some massive support from 3rd parties. I don't know if you have a nice PC for games but if you don't, Bioshock alone is worth a 360 imo. Gears, Halo, and Mass Effect I feel are must haves this generation as well.

As for the hardware problems i'm sorry but I just don't see it being such a widespread problem like some on the forums would have you believe. Yes some do break, more then necessarily should, but they have a great warranty and my experience with shipping in my old Xbox a few years back left me very satisfied with how prompt they are in returning your hardware. Of all the people I know with 360s (and all my friends are gamers, so it's not just a few people I know with them) only one has had his break. He got it back quick and is still happy with his purchase. Basically it's not likely to break and if it does Microsoft will hook you up so you can game again fast.

Anyway I wound up getting both systems but if I had to choose one it would be 360. If you go PS3 though it's not a bad buy. You won't get ripped off either way.

You make some solid points, thanks. I agree the 360 gets the better multiplats in general. Recently some games have done better on PS3. I wish I knew if that was coincidence or if its the developers getting used to designing for the PS3. I guess only time will tell.

``I really like how the PS3 can update itself via internet and stay updated so easily. This leads me to believe the PS3 will be relevent for a long time and continue to improve.``

Hum, The 360 updates itself too...
