I guess it comes down to personal opinion...

I've been playing PSX jRPGs on my ps3 for the last month and having an insane amount of fun.

2d games like Suikoden II / Valkyrie Profile / Lunar look bloody amazing upscaled to 1080p :D

I've also played FFX, SotC, Shadow Hearts 2 and Suikoden III recently and the graphics didn't bother me at all.

After two years of gaming with an xbox 360, it's painful to see PS2 era games in motion. I don't even have my ps2 hooked up anymore. I guess my eyes have just gotten used to HD content. Like DMC is a buffet for the eyes, while No More Heroes looks like paper cutouts a third grader made filmed in stop motion. At this point I only find the PS3, and the 360 as consoles worth buying.DiGiTal-PiMp

You strike me as the kind of person that gets coloring books for christmas, every year, for the rest of your life.

Funny stuff.

Yes, there are some classics that are fun to play (every once and a while). SMB, for instance. Some of the oldest, worst graphics but fun to play. Especially if you played it new.

But acting like this is commonplace, that most people that own a PS3 and 360 like playing their old games so often, is such foolery. While some games are classics, you can usually find a like game in teh current gen to offer as much fun with "now" technology. And that is what most prefer.

Think of it this way: I'm standing in line for the new Star Wars movie. It's 3am and I'm wearing my Yoda suit. I look left and right, people are all dressed up and excited for the movie. Everyone talks about how they watched all of the other episodes to be ready for this one. This is a big deal. Everyone must dress in Star Wars suits, wait in line all night, and watches all of the other movies before going to see a new Star Wars release. How stupid is it for me to assume that?

Yes, there are those that are that big of Star Wars fans that do all of that stuff. They dress up, they wait in line all night, they watched every prior episode before seeing the new one. But most people just go see it when they can. Most people don't dress up in Star Wars outfits to go see the movie. most people just go watch the new episode going off of their memory on the old ones, not sitting for 8 hours watching them all.

If you want to base your thoughts on what is normal off of what you see here in SW or what you see amongst your other "hardcore" friends, you're wrong. It isn't the norm.

correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't the older star wars movies (with the dated special effects) considered the better overall movies by most star wars fans?

Wow. That's sad. I still love playing the SNES or NES, or even my Gamecube. Just because it doesn't look as nice mean they are less fun.

I am talking about extreme fans.

Your movies to game comparison is harder to follow. You take an older Star Wars movie and you have live action and you sit and watch it. And in the new ones, guess what? Those things don't change. They are still live action and you still sit and watch them.

With games, you have graphics. And graphics are improved upon each gen to get the player more involved into the story. Same with audio. And, yes, the same can be said for movies. But here's where they differ. How do you get a comparable feature in a movie to new controls/controller? How do you find a comparable feature in a movie to online? How do you compare the graphical difference between SMB on NES and SMG on Wii to the differences in the first and last three star wars movies? Its not like Luke was made up of 20 pixels back then and now you can see him as a real person. He was always a real person.

I think anyone and everyone could name a few titles they love from last gen that they don't have an issue playing from time to time. But what does that show?

Most games either have a sequel out or gong to be out this gen. If not, there's probably something offered to give you similar play and fun. That is how games sell, people. If the older games were so sweet, we wouldn't move on. Plain and simple.

If you look at all of the games released last gen and then look at those titles worth a replay, the TC isn't too far off.

He's way off. The title of this thread:Last gen games are unplayable.

Not only are people playing last gen games, they are playing games 2,3 or more generations before that.

Nintendo's Virtual Console, XBLA and PSN are also proving this to be incorrect. The TC needs to stop playing himself.

You just proved me right. Snow white is a classic. And I'm sure there are those cult-SWATSD people that would put it over anything new. But if they were to re-release Snow White in its original quality in the theatres, you can't tell me it would outsell a upcoming movie like Wall-E (if its like every other pixar movie). While the fans will stay true to a title, the masses want new.

Most people look at current gen titles and then look at prior gen games as an afterthought. While you'll find a large group on the contrary here in GS, that doesn't mean GS represents the masses. I think its pretty understood that the majority of the people that post on these forums and others like it are not "normal" gamers. For every dude I know that loves games like I do, I know 5 more that are casual as hell.

I'm not saying they are unplayable. That is a little harsh. I just don't think they are what everyone spent money on a new console for, for the most part.

If new is what people want, why are the best selling games SEQUELS? I can understand something completely new outselling new FPS franchise #96. But there are still those people like me who want to play the old games. When I get a job some of the biggest items on my list of things to get are Playstation and Wii Point cards so I can play the old PS1/SNES/NES/Genesis/N64 games I missed out on. That doesn't mean that I'm not going to buy something like No More Heroes.

I'm sorry to hear that you've lost the ability to enjoy games for their gameplay value and instead put more emphasis on their graphical capability. It's an unfortunate thing that I hope does not happen to other true gamers.

Yeah back when in 2004 when i was playing doom 3 and half life 2 i finally realized that the PC just destroys everything on the consoles.

I have gotten so used to my PC with Crysis on medium settings that anything on the consoles look like garbage.

Here here! Super Mario Bros. looks and plays as great as it did over 20 years ago... same with Metroid Prime, GTA3, GT4, etc. There's more to gaming than graphics.

To sum up your post: "I only enjoy games if they have a high end graphics. If a game has bad graphics, but outstanding game play, it still isn't worth playing."

Should I even bother commenting on that?

I can play last gen games with an art style like Fable and it doesnt bother me, but if they tried to make it photo realistic in 2004 now it just looks awful, and takes all the fun away.

YOu must've had fun with lair. I, on the other hand, can still play ps1 games no problem. Cuz I don't give a crap about graphics, story and gameplay are what keep me coming back for more.

All style no substance

I'll have fun with my Ogre Battle 64, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Battlefront 2.

[QUOTE="Erkidu"]That's pretty sad, really... I still play my SNES on a fairly regular basis.AgentA-Mi6

Me too, Classics FTW, Gameplay+story>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Graphics.

Last Gen Games>>>>>>>>>>>> Current gen games.

It's nice to know I'm not alone in life.

I recently played GOW 1 & 2 on my PS3 and UC2 and NGB on my X360. I found this last gen games still hold up well.

Sucks to be you. I'm glad I don't use graphics to define what games I can play. To anyone in their early 20's and older, remember when games weren't about graphics and actually centered around gameplay and innovation? I guess you'll be missing out on replaying (or playing for the first time) some great Wii, PS2, PSP, DS, Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast, N64, PS1, Saturn, Snes, Genesis, Turbo-Graphix, Atrai, Nes, and Gameboy games because they don't have HD graphics.

[QUOTE="CJL13"][QUOTE="The_Crucible"]

Then what about animation? It's not like you can't watch SWATSD because of the computer animation coming out nowadays.

I know what are you are trying to say. A lot of people here are gamers who have this as their main hobby, and as such, are more likely to play old games from the past regardless of graphics. But I guess why people are flipping out here is because of someone's outright refusal to play on the older systems. The original topic creator does not come off like a casual gamer only interested in the newer stuff; I mean, chances are if he is using gamespot's forums, that usually is indicator that someone has more than a casual interest in gaming. Its unfortunate because there are a lot of good games that he could play if he didn't have that bias. As a gamespot user , it kind sends the message that all users are that way.

The romanticism that people have with the past generations can come into question, you're right. I'll admit that it can be harder for me to play Mario Kart 64 since Double Dash released. But that doesn't I will refuse to play it. I didn't play the original Mega Man games when they were released, but I did now and loved them. However, I can't say the same for say Soul Edge. I don't hate the game but it has to do more with the aging mechanics of the games. But does that mean I hate it? No, it doesn't.

Lair is of course an obvious example of what happens when graphics are emphasized over gameplay. The TC is sending the message this game is preferred over say, Grand Theft Auto III (for example), simply because of the huge graphical advantage Lair has over it. That's pretty bad, considerding how unplayable that game is. But it looks good right? I won't mention Gears of War because that's a great game. All else equal, I might prefer Gears of War simply because I like it better. Yeah, I like graphics in the game. But what hits home with me more and many others is that the game is fun. Whether or not its more fun than GTA 3 is up to discussion, but my point is that Gears is not usually ripped a part by people who like older games primarily because the game is fun. Same with goes Bioshock. In ten years, these games will be classics themselves. They have style and substance. The TC hereprefersstyle;substanceis of second importance. That's too bad, because in a few years, these games might be bad to him because the newer systems will make these "obsolete".
