[QUOTE="CJL13"][QUOTE="The_Crucible"] I am talking about extreme fans.
Your movies to game comparison is harder to follow. You take an older Star Wars movie and you have live action and you sit and watch it. And in the new ones, guess what? Those things don't change. They are still live action and you still sit and watch them.
With games, you have graphics. And graphics are improved upon each gen to get the player more involved into the story. Same with audio. And, yes, the same can be said for movies. But here's where they differ. How do you get a comparable feature in a movie to new controls/controller? How do you find a comparable feature in a movie to online? How do you compare the graphical difference between SMB on NES and SMG on Wii to the differences in the first and last three star wars movies? Its not like Luke was made up of 20 pixels back then and now you can see him as a real person. He was always a real person.

Then what about animation? It's not like you can't watch SWATSD because of the computer animation coming out nowadays.
You just proved me right. Snow white is a classic. And I'm sure there are those cult-SWATSD people that would put it over anything new. But if they were to re-release Snow White in its original quality in the theatres, you can't tell me it would outsell a upcoming movie like Wall-E (if its like every other pixar movie). While the fans will stay true to a title, the masses want new.
Most people look at current gen titles and then look at prior gen games as an afterthought. While you'll find a large group on the contrary here in GS, that doesn't mean GS represents the masses. I think its pretty understood that the majority of the people that post on these forums and others like it are not "normal" gamers. For every dude I know that loves games like I do, I know 5 more that are casual as hell.
I'm not saying they are unplayable. That is a little harsh. I just don't think they are what everyone spent money on a new console for, for the most part.
I know what are you are trying to say. A lot of people here are gamers who have this as their main hobby, and as such, are more likely to play old games from the past regardless of graphics. But I guess why people are flipping out here is because of someone's outright refusal to play on the older systems. The original topic creator does not come off like a casual gamer only interested in the newer stuff; I mean, chances are if he is using gamespot's forums, that usually is indicator that someone has more than a casual interest in gaming. Its unfortunate because there are a lot of good games that he could play if he didn't have that bias. As a gamespot user , it kind sends the message that all users are that way.
The romanticism that people have with the past generations can come into question, you're right. I'll admit that it can be harder for me to play Mario Kart 64 since Double Dash released. But that doesn't I will refuse to play it. I didn't play the original Mega Man games when they were released, but I did now and loved them. However, I can't say the same for say Soul Edge. I don't hate the game but it has to do more with the aging mechanics of the games. But does that mean I hate it? No, it doesn't.
Lair is of course an obvious example of what happens when graphics are emphasized over gameplay. The TC is sending the message this game is preferred over say, Grand Theft Auto III (for example), simply because of the huge graphical advantage Lair has over it. That's pretty bad, considerding how unplayable that game is. But it looks good right? I won't mention Gears of War because that's a great game. All else equal, I might prefer Gears of War simply because I like it better. Yeah, I like graphics in the game. But what hits home with me more and many others is that the game is fun. Whether or not its more fun than GTA 3 is up to discussion, but my point is that Gears is not usually ripped a part by people who like older games primarily because the game is fun. Same with goes Bioshock. In ten years, these games will be classics themselves. They have style and substance. The TC hereprefersstyle;substanceis of second importance. That's too bad, because in a few years, these games might be bad to him because the newer systems will make these "obsolete".
