I mean in contrast to the praise, you could maybe make the argument it's overrated, but that's any game that would get that kind of praise, unless it's Super Metroid, which is perfect.
But, I like the game on a lot of fronts. While I wish the shooting didn't have a random element to it, I think the sway is an actual good design decision for what they want you to feel in combat. Shooting a gun isn't as simple as point, shoot, they drop, you need to be a bit more mindful of your shots, and it adds to a sense of urgency with the games limited pool of ammunition. Even if a lot of is psychological and the game will give you free ammo for emptying a gun and killing someone with it. The guns are nice n loud n beefy, the health kits have to be crafted through your own supplies+a health system that can make long term damage a meaningful part of the gameplay, shivs are a insta kill for you or they open doors, a respectable assortment of weapons for the most part that you carry at once, and good encounter designs.
The better ones tend to be against the humans where you do the games vanilla ass stealth (shallow), but not necessarily to ghost (though you can ghost some stretches) but to pick people apart and then when shit hits the fan start fighting them off. The limited ammo gives you an incentive to sneak, and because you can break line of sight, you can trigger a stealth state all over again. It makes for really engaging shoot outs that a lot if its contemporaries can't really deliver on in the same. I wouldn't put it up to snuff with RE4 or Vanquish in terms of depth, or Max Payne in sheer primal thrill, but I like it a hell of a lot more than I like other cover based shooters that aren't Binary Domain.
The multiplayer, while having noticeable balance issues and pay 2 win microtransaction bullshit, is actually kind of good on a base level. It's actually something unique as far as TPS goes, what with the crafting your stuff during a match, the gun sway is altered a bit to work more consistently in mp, the more slow, deliberate pace of the game forces a level of coordination because you can be punished harshly for taking on people alone, and the different tools create for interesting reversal opportunities.
It isn't replacing Counter-Strike any time soon, but it's genuinely well thought out for the most part.
