First and last episode are my favorites. Final episode they played it pretty close to the source material, and I'm glad they had the giraffe bit here as well.
Overall I felt like the series was better in the sum of its parts, a bit of a mixed bag for me.
I was not a big fan of some of the deviations that changed the story path outright, whereas others I appreciated for developing new background layers and context for the existing story. Several deviations felt completely useless; like the episode where they got ambushed in the city. They had to give the Raiders a whole backstory and introduce entirely new characters that lead them. They went completely no where with these characters outside of this episode, and they felt very contrived for the sole belief that everything must be explained to the audience. We really did not need to know much more about the Raiders other than them being a threat to Ellie and Joel, and many cases telling less tells a lot more. The episode could have been greater focused on Ellie and Joel trying to get away from these people and with great suspense, but instead it spent too much time with new characters that amount to being nothing more than one-off characters.
The writing was a mixed bag to me. A few episodes felt too on the nose with feeling telegraphed like a video game NPC with little to no nuance to the dialogue beyond characters taking turns exchanging lines, whereas other episodes it felt more organic and natural.
Some of the melodrama was fine, but I'm disappointed by the surprising lack of Clickers in the series. I suspect it could have been a lack of budget to go all-out on some of the major Clicker set pieces that were present in the video game, so that was disappointing to me that they pretty much skipped right over much of them from the game as if they never happened. Most of the handful of Clicker moments were quick and not very impacting with the suspense either.
Overall, not bad, not great either. Respectable for a video game adaptation? Sure. But the bar is low so that's not really saying much. 7/10
