Left 4 Dead is a first-person shooter being made by Valve (Developers of Half-Life). It pits four humans (referred to as survivors) against hordes of zombies (referred to as infected); The Infected are similar to the zombies seen in the film 28 Days Later.

Left 4 Dead was a suprising hit at E3 08' and walked away with Gamespot's Editors' Best Shooter and Best PC Game awards.

Structure of the Game

Left 4 Dead at it's core is get from Point A to Point B alive. In your way lies the infected and the bosses (More on them Later). The Game is being designed with replayability in mind. Every time you play the game will be a unique experience as zombies never appear in the same place twice (See AI Director). The game is comprised of 4 scenarios (referred to as movies), consisting of 5 maps, making for a grand total of 20 maps. The maps are linked together by safe rooms. Once all living survivors are inside the safe room, the next map in the scenario is loaded. While loading, the game will display stats showing the MVP in certain areas. For example, the player with the least amount of friendly fire damage or who killed the most infected. However, bad stats will also be displayed, like who inflicted the most friendly fire damage, or exploded the Boomer near teammates. Once the next map loads, any dead players from the last round will respawn and everyone will get a chance to restock on ammo and health.

The Last Map in each scenario is the finale. Instead of reaching a safe room, you usually hold down an area until some form of help arrives (in the case of the hospital scenario, a helicopter is coming to your rescue on top of the roof). If you survive long enough to make it on the chopper, you have completed the scenario. Keeping in mind the movie theme that Left 4 Dead has going, the "credits" will then roll, which happen to be the overall stats for the entire movie.

Lastly there will be moments in the game where zombies are spawned by triggers. For example, in one of the hospital maps, you press the call button for the elevator, which triggers an infected attack. These moments are referred to as Crescendo Events. One can take advantage of these events, since you control when the infected will appear, and can prepare yourself for the attack. Sometimes there will be gasoline containers you can place and shoot to create fire walls, or a near by mounted gun that a player may use.

Game Modes

Single Player

While Left 4 Dead is designed with multiplayer in mind; you can traverse the entire campaign by yourself with bots controlling your teammates. The Bots have been stated to be quite capable, but nothing beats playing with a buddy.

Campaign/Coop

While Playing Online with Friends in the Coop mode, the boss infected will be controlled by the AI. In this mode, dead survivors may spawn in locked rooms, and wait for their teammates to let them out.

Versus

Versus mode lets four more players enter the game as the Boss Infected players. This mode is designed to challenge even the most roughened survivors. The Boss Infected spawn much quicker than in the Campaign Mode (around 20-30 seconds). Survivors in this mode can only respawn in safe rooms, so when you die, you're out until the next map. The goal for the survivors remains the same, get to the safe room. The Boss Infected have to do their best to stop the humans from reaching their goal.

The two teams play a map until all the survivors die or reach the safe room. Then they flip sides, and play the same map. Once the new survivor team finishes, the score for both teams is displayed based on various factors and the game loads up the next map in the scenario. Once the End of the scenario is reached, the final score is displayed, and the winning team is announced.

THE AI DIRECTOR

The driving force in Left 4 Dead is referred to as the AI Director. The Director's influence is felt everywhere. Primarily it controls where and how many zombies spawn. It will react to how players are progressing through a map. So for example, a team of coordinated players will result in the Director throwing larger hordes at you more frequently. If the team is doing bad (Shooting each other, or constantly getting hurt), then the game will throw hordes at you comprised of less enemies. This does not mean Left 4 Dead is an easy game, if players expect to beat a map, they must work as a team, once things start to go bad, it's hard to recover.

The Director will also reward coordinated players with Dramatic Payoffs. For example, a scene was shown at E3 08' at a gas station. The Team who was doing bad had a battle with few infected, and moved on. However the next clip was shown of a team that was doing well, which resulted in a large horde attacking and subsequently the gas station exploded into a spectacle of flames and smoke.

The director has some influence over ammo and health placements outside of safe rooms, but there will placements that are always in a specific place. And again, to set the move theme, the Director is able to set the tone of the game by amplifying and changing the background music and post process effects. The main goal of the director is to adjust the pace of the game to create hills and valleys; resulting in moments of quiet suspense followed by adrenaline pounding action.

COOP EXPERIENCE

The game features Drop-In/Drop-Out support, meaning that if you start up a game by yourself, players can hop in and take control of an ai controlled survivor immediately. Likewise they can leave the game, and the ai will resume control. Another interesting feature is when a player goes afk, the AI will automatically take control of the player until he returns. You can turn this option on manually as well. It is unknown how the game will handle achievements when in this afk mode.

Team work is vital to success in Left 4 Dead. Aside from the fact that more survivors means more guns shooting infected, there are situations in the game where the players must cooperate to save someone in jeopardy. Once a player reaches zero health in left 4 Dead, they fall to the floor. While on the floor, Players are unable to move, but they can still fire their weapons in a prone like position. These downed players only have a certain amount of time before they bleed out and die, but if another survivor comes and picks them up; they can continue to play. A player may only fall down three times without using a health pack until they die.

While the characters themselves possess no abilities that set them apart, the weapon load out that each team chooses will serve to give them specialty roles. The hunting rifle is useful to take down infected at a distance and is more suited for rural, open maps. Likewise, the shotgun is a good choice in enclosed spaces, such as the hospital scenario. Every survivor is able to carry just one medkit at any given time, which may be used on themselves or their friends.

To encourage good sportsmanship, the game's ai monitors everyone's actions, and at each safe room/check point, the game displays various stats. Such examples are who shot the killed the most infected, and healed the most teammates. On the other hand, the game will also display who did the most friendly fire damage (Friendly Fire is ALWAYS on with the exception of easy mode) or shoots a boomer near teammates. These stats are permanent like TF2, and players will easily be able to view these stats and see who is worth teaming up with or not in the matchmaking lobby. While in game, there is a voting system in place that allows players to kick players out or block them from using explosive weapons like the pipe bomb if they are incapable of using it properly. Up to this point, you may of been thinking this formula may get old quick, but don't forget about the...

BOSS INFECTED

HUNTER

The Hunter lurks in the shadows. He crawls around the ground when crouched, and waits for the Survivors to draw near. His special attack allows him to pounce on a single survivor; pinning him to the ground. While pinned to the ground, the Hunter slashes at his victim. The only way the survivor can escape is if another survivor deals damage to the hunter. The Hunter is similar to smoker in his intended role of encouraging Cooperation and Separating survivors from the group.

SMOKER

The Smoker is able to blend in with the horde. When killed, the Smoker explodes leaving behind a thick cloud of smoke. The Smoker's Special Attack allows him to shoot his tongue out at survivors. If a survivor is hit, he or she is dragged towards the Smoker while being suffocated. If the survivor is hit, he has a few split seconds to shoot the Smoker himself before being dragged and choked. Otherwise like the hunter, the only way a survivor can escape is if another survivor deals damage to the Smoker. The Smoker main role is to literally separate survivors.

BOOMER

The Boomer is the fat man. When the Boomer is killed, he explodes covering survivors in Vomit, attracting the horde towards you while impairing your vision. The Boomer's Special Attack allows him to vomit, covering Survivors in Vomit at a range. The Boomer's role is basically to cause chaos, and was created since he is the only exception to the rule of Shoot Anything Dead...well maybe besides the Witch.

TANK

The Tank is a mountain of Muscles. He is the strongest of all the infected, and will not go down easily. The Tank's Special Attack allows him to hurl debris at a survivor causing massive damage if it successfully hits. The Tank's main attack will basically launch survivors into the air, dealing massive damage and separating them from the group. The Tank is able to change the pace of the game, and can bring a well balanced team to its knees.

WITCH

The Only Boss that is unplayable in the versus mode; the Witch is a crying infected woman, who curls up in a fetal position on the ground. I cannot stress this enough, Avoid Her. If the Witch is disturbed by Gunfire, Flash Lights, or Simply the Presence of a nearby Survivor, she will stand up and KO the offender in one hit.

Scenarios/Movies

No Mercy-

No Mercy is an Urban Campaign that ends on top of the Hospital. It takes you through Sewers and a Subway Station.

Blood Harvest-

Blood Harvest Is a Rural Campaign that ends at the Farm House. It takes you through the Woods and into a Dangerous Cornfield

Dead Air-

Dead Air is an Urban campaign that ends on an Airport Runway. It takes you through a construction site and into the airport terminal.

Death Toll-

Not much is known about this rural scenario except it involves murky countryside and a water filtration plant. Judging from the Achievement for completing the scenario, you escape on a boat.

Some Q&A:

Q: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DEMO!?

A: It was a timed Demo. It is long gone by now. You've had plenty of time to decide if it's worth buying.

Q: The PC has splitscreen?

A: People who got the demo early for the PC discovered that there was left over code for Splitscreen, and users managed to get it working. However, Valve recently removed the command to get it working, but it's currently on track to be included in the full release.

Hi folks,

So splitscreen was always something we only wanted to officially support on the x360 due to the controller issues. However, we are planning on making some of the functionality work on the PC as an "unsupported" bonus feature. We turned it off for the demo because we didn't want to have to deal with any additional bug reports etc. about it interfering with the demo experience, but the current plan is to re-enable it after we launch the full product.

There are a number of tuning variables, the but tricky thing will be the controller. When testing, the best setup on the PC is to have two joystick/x360 ****USB controllers. I think it will also be possible to have one keyboard/mouse and one joystick player.

I haven't looked into supporting two keyboards/mice, as I'm not even sure PC's can deal with that and I doubt we're talking about lots and lots of possible users for such a config.

Anyway, feel free to post this information around as appropriate.

Some Valve Guy

Q: How Long will the Game Be?

A: Each Movie is said to clock in at around 1 hour. But seeing as this is a multiplayer game, it should be noted that playtime will be much longer, ant take into consideration post-release content.

Q: How many infected can be on screen at once?

A: 30.

Q: OH NO! Left 4 Dead has EA listed as the Publisher! Does that mean that Left 4 Dead will have limited installs or SecuroM!

A: No to Both.

Q: Will Left 4 Dead have a story?

A: Not really. However during the game, details of the world will be revealed by the survivors and the environment around them. For example, in the safe rooms, messages will be written on the walls, informing other survivors what is going on, sometimes providing hints at where your next destination is. usually during the finale, you come into contact with someone to rescue you.

Q: How Much will the Game Cost?

A: $50 for the PC, $60 for the 360. However, if you prepurchase Left 4 Dead on steam now, you'll get a 10% discount, and pay $44.99. If you preorder the game on any platform at a Gamestop, you will get the discount as well, bringing down the 360 version to $54.99.

Q: Are there any explosives in the game?

A: Yes. There are no Rocket Launchers, but there are Pipe Bombs and Molotovs. The Pipebomb has a gadget on top that beeps when you throw it. The Infected will be lured towards it and explode into a gory mess. The Molotov is great for setting Infected on fire and creating instant "flame shields".

Q: Can we turn off Friendly Fire?

A: NO! That being said, I'm sure some one is going to try and turn it off on the PC version. That being said, FF damage scales based on what difficulty you're playing. On the easiest difficulty, you won't kill anyone unless you unload on them. On Harder difficulties each shot will take off significantly more health.

Q: Whats the difference in difficulties?

A: When you pick a difficulty, the infected will deal more damage to you, you'll receive less ammo and health packs during a map, etc. The hardest difficulty is Expert.

Impressions and Awards

Gamespot awarded it E3 Editor's Choice Awards for...

Best Shooter

Shooters are popular. Game developers seem to make a lot of them. So the shooter category for our E3 awards is always crowded, and voting for a winner is always competitive. But at the end of the day, our winner for best shooter of the show went to Left 4 Dead, the distinctive multiplayer-only shooter that pits a team of players against an army of bloodthirsty zombies in an ongoing worst-case scenario story reminiscent of Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later. In the game, you'll play as a member of a small team of survivors that is immune to the mysterious plague that has turned the rest of humanity into an army of shambling murder machines. Your only hope--aside from carefully saving ammo for whichever conventional weapons you might be carrying--is your teammates. Because there are just so darn many zombies, you'll need to rely on your buddies to lay down backup fire when you're surrounded, as well as pick you up and drag you to safety if the zombies catch up to you. Left 4 Dead looks great in motion, and its unflinching challenge to get players to work together or suffer the consequences is a refreshing change of pace.

Best PC Game

Escaping the pack is your primary goal in Left 4 Dead, so it's fitting that this fast-paced shooter came out ahead in a group of strong PC games at E3. From the moment we sat down at Valve's booth alongside three other players, the harrowing action and frantic pace of Left 4 Dead kept us glued to our mouse and keyboard. Many other games offered expansive action on a broad scale, but it was this claustrophobic and single-minded survival struggle that caught our attention and wouldn't let go.

We had seen Left 4 Dead before, but the level we tackled at E3 was new. Starting off on the ground floor of a hospital, we began to ascend to the roof where a helicopter was set to airlift us to safety. Almost immediately, we were engaged by "the infected "--the quick, 28 Days Later-esque creatures whose sole purpose was to rend us limb from limb. After dispatching the first few waves with relative ease, we soon found ourselves beset by hordes of enemies as the game's dynamic artificial intelligence ramped up the challenge. As the action reached a fevered pitch, we found ourselves yelling things like, "Get this thing off me! GET THIS TENTACLE OFF ME!!" and "Stick together or die alone!" The dark, half-finished hospital set an ominous scene for our haggard, sunken-eyed crew, and the legions of infected moved with a lurching, unnatural speed that was truly unnerving. Not only did Left 4 Dead cause us to spontaneously shout lines that would fit well in a cheesy slasher movie, but it thoroughly impressed us visually and thrilled us right on through to our horrible, gruesome deaths.

And they Nominated it for Game of the Show

Gamespot's Latest Preview

This session with Left 4 Dead was unique in that we had the chance to play a single movie in two very different ways: once in single-player on a PC, and a second time with four people on the Xbox 360. In single-player, your teammates are replaced by AI-controlled bots. Oddly enough, this situation proves to be far more survival-friendly than playing with human teammates. Aside from having a bit of trouble recognizing the dangers of fire and wasting their ammo by shooting zombies near a pipe bomb you've just thrown, the AI teammates are very helpful and good at sticking close by your side. We had a much easier time making it to the end without all that pesky human error getting in the way, but at the same time that sense of human cooperation is what makes Left 4 Dead so much fun.

In terms of platform differences, the PC version clearly looks better, but for that we can thank Valve's roots as a PC developer. Still, the 360 version looks great by the console's own standards and controls very well. Deciding which version to pick up will be tough, whether you want to go with the 360's ease of matchmaking with Xbox Live or the PC's slicker visuals and greater potential for postrelease updates. You can look forward to seeing our review for both games when Left 4 Dead arrives on November 20.

In Gamespot's Hands On...

While five missions doesn't sound like a lot, you'll almost definitely have to repeat parts of the game while you and your teammates work out the best strategy to defeat the hordes intent on ending your humanity. We've talked about the hospital in earlier previews, and after several attempts we were able to complete the last chapter in it, Rooftop Finale. After fighting your way through the hospital's wards, surgeries, and yet-to-be-completed top floors you'll emerge on the rooftop, where you can radio for an extraction via the helipad. Unfortunately, you'll have to stave off a small army of infected before the helicopter arrives, which took us a few tries. They swarmed out from every direction, even climbing up the sides of the high-rise hospital, and we decided the most sensible course of action was to barricade ourselves inside a storage room, blazing our guns at the door--which we were told by EA was a suitable course of action.

Throughout the missions you'll encounter the sometimes eerie, sometimes amusing warning left by other survivors such as the time it takes to become infected written by one survivor as a few weeks, crossed out and rewritten as days by another, only to have a later survivor say, "I saw it happen in hours." While some of the scrawls are purely humorous--"'we deserved this'...'maybe you did, I didn't do anything,'" others are more useful and can help with you mission progression, such as "head north to Echo" or "follow the tracks." Taking the latter advice, for better or worse, led us to a tunnel with carriages and debris strewn across the track. Lighting, as you'd expect, is limited to moonlight, flashlights, and the occasional burning fire, and conditions didn't improve throughout the mission.

--------------------------------------------------

Rock Paper shotgun posted a new preview of the game.

Some snippets:

On replayability:

[quote="RPS"]Despite a single play through of all four campaigns lasting about as long as the average console shooter, that's not how it's intended to be played. I think that was possibly my big concern with Left 4 Dead, and it seems to have been taken care of. The Director, the omniscient controller of what happens in the game, seems genuinely capable of mixing things up in such a way that you can't make cohesive plans.Arsuz

Why shouldn't I hype the best mutiplayer game coming out this year.

It's AAA Confirmed. Even Gamespot Seems to like it.

Best PC Game of 2008, and Best Multiplayer Game of 2008. Likely to be nominated for GOTY, but I don't think it will nab that one.

9.0, maybe 9.5.

One of my most anticipated games this year, maybe my most. Zombies + Valve? What's gonna go wrong?

I don't think you need to worry about that. But that being said, the best AI won't ever replace a human player, unless he/her really sucks.

I really don't see what's so amazing about this one. It has a shot at being good but I think it's a bit over hyped

There's zombies and its developed by Valve. The only way it could be any better was if one character was a ninja and you also fought pirates and robots.

I'm not a sucker for zombies like a lot of gamers, that's not why I don't see it. But is it Valve? Or Turtle Rock? I know what a movement counter strike was/is, but the only game Turtle Rock has made scored a 6.8

This game also has one of the coolest box arts that I have seen in a LONG time. I mean a pale looking hand with his ******* thumb ripped off! Are they really going to allow it on store shelves? :O

Doubt it. SAW2 boxart had the sawn off fingers and was removed from the shelves.

Anyways can't wait for the game :D

You are probably correct in your score prediction but I strongly feel that the modding community as well as Valve's great support for their games after release (see TF2 and to an extent DoD: Source) I think that this will have unlimited replay value.

Have you even seen L4D? The game is flooded with zombies. Now imagine all those hordes of zombies chasing you down the street at running speed.

Now that's scary.

Exactly... anyone good at the game will face like 50 zombies at once plus 4-5 super-zombies(tank/boomer/smoker)

There are plenty of Infected On Screen in Left 4 Dead.

Source is showing it's age, but Left 4 Dead is a pretty game, and looks great in action.

Note also that all of the bottom bars are glowing-meaning he has all the weapons-meaning he has the chainsaw...

killing all those zombies will be piss easy.

Righttttt, Im really scared of them because I simply CANT run from slow zombies, their consistent slow progress is freakin me out!

If you dont think fast zombies are scary, you can at least admit that having 20 fast zombies coming at you at least make for an awesome shooting fest.
