[QUOTE="sonicmj1"][QUOTE="Devour2Survive"]I don't get the appeal for this game. Shooting down countless zombies doesn't get old now?BobHipJames
If you simplify anything to that degree, you can make anything sound repetitive.
In my view, Left 4 Dead is a great game. It encourages cooperation better than just about any other title I've played, without consigning people into particular roles. And while it may have a limited amount of content, the AI system makes every game different enough that there's always tension in each game, because you never know where the next attack is coming from. And Versus is a total blast to play with others.
It just about perfectly captures the sort of emotions that one ought to feel in a zombie game, creating an omnipresent feeling of dread, and instilling in the players a desperation to survive the odds.
A fine choice for those awards.
Dread and desperation? No. The best impression I got from the demo is that it manages to occasionally throw a hell of a lot of zombies at you that throw you off your guard or make sure to exploit people who wander off on their own. All this game requires you to do as far as teamwork is stick together and kill stuff. That isn't a very hard maneuver to pull off. See teammate? Follow him. See zombie? Shoot. Zombie rushing you? Attack. Teammate under attack? Set priority to zombies trying to kill him. Wowwwww. This is some groundbreaking stuff here. And for the record, I like class-based co-op gameplay. Shotgun or SMG? Auto shotgun or auto-rifle? Please. Talk about a lack of diversity. It really didn't draw any emotion out of me TBH. It bored me.Sorry you feel that way.
Naturally, a team that sticks together will do better. And once you get a good sense of the tactics (which are a bit more complex than what you describe), you can handle a lot of situations. That's what the higher difficulty levels are for.
But you have to be on your toes. If your group isn't working on sticking together and prioritizing key threats, then boss infected can start to really screw things up by splitting up the group, confusing and disorienting players. Especially on Expert, where the challenge ramps up really fast, even small hordes of zombies are a huge threat if not handled promptly.
And unlike most class-free co-op shooters, one player absolutely cannot handle everything. Every enemy in the game, and most mechanics, are designed to ensure that a group that plays together and works together will survive, while a group that doesn't play as a team will be killed off.
That's what matters. Weapon variety and stuff may sound nice on box art, but what purpose do tons of weapons serve? What would defined classes lend to the game? It's about fighting an overwhelming zombie horde alongside your friends, and working together to make it to the end. The experience of that is unlike any other game I have ever played.
Sorry if it didn't click for you, but I enjoy it every time I play it, and I expect to continue to enjoy it for a long time to come.
