What's your take on console RTSs? Do you have fun with them? Have you ever played the counterparts on the PC?

I bring this up because I did notice that RA3 is coming to the PS3, and it's already on the PC. Personally, I really like RA3. It's fun to jump into a ranked 1v1 or a 2v2, pwning face.

However, considering the sheer size of the maps, I find myself making commands all across the map with speed. Sometimes using the minimap, to quickly look at the enemy base. I can't imagine how such a thing would be done with a controller.

Then the fact that I use hotkeys for EVERYTHING. Just for example, I might set all my Anti-air planes to group 3, my Anti-ground air to group 2, my ground units to group 1, Natasha to group 4... etc.

Then there are micros, where i will quickly double click a unit type to make it (a) dodge the enemy (b) switch attack type (c) make it concentrate on a diff target etc.

I really want to know, because I simply don't understand... how do you play these games on a console? Please elaborate.

Why would you judge console RTS on civ rev? Theres much better rts games about that you can access.

I do not think there at the point where I'll enjoy them as much as i do on the pc - yet. They will be though, there improving. All it needs is the halo of the rts world to pop up and it'll hit it off, just like FPS. Hoping Halo wars will manage it..but i really don't hold my breath.

Anyway, what can Cows know about RTS on consoles since they have very limited library that mostly consists of one multiplat (EndWar), and don't have two AA RTS games, LOTR: Battle of Middle Earth II and Command and Conquer 3 which are only on 360 (as far as consoles are concerned, which is said in the topic already).

That's because it isn't a RTS.

But onto the topic at hand, I don't like them, I feel that control pads or whatever you want to call them work fine for every genre, expect for RTS. The world would be a much happier place if they all had mouse and keyboard support.

I thought maybe the voice command mechanics of End War could maybe have worked, but they still don't give you the ease of play you get with a mouse and keyboard.

Well I've played CnC3 and Kanes Wrath on the 360 a lot. I also played the demo for CnC3 on the PC. While I can tell you that the PC version is undoubtedly the superior version, those games still worked really well for the 360. You can assign up to 8 groups and then you scroll through them with the D-pad. You can also do a lot of little things with simple button combination too, so there really aren't too many hot keys missing surprisingly. I could go in deeper about it if you want me too. The biggest problem is the fact that the 360's hardware just isn't as powerful as a pc so you can only build up to 50 units, and only play with 4 players online. RTS's work on console's just fine.

I'll never buy a console RTS, If mouse+Kb is good for any type of game, it's RTSs.

PC is the only platform I'll buy an RTS for, I have Red Alert 3 for it. Great game.

Don't care. Only console RTS I've played was Red Alert on the PS1. That game was off the hook.

If they ever get the controls down, I wouldn't mind RTS games on consoles. But unless more console games would use KB/M support, more complex RTS games will always be on PC due to the KB/M.

As long as the controls are thought out, like in BFME2, no problem.

Also, they should use more voice commands, then you'd be fine too.

i don't like RTSes, but usually they are bad on the consoles compared to what the PC has. the controls are horrible like u have to do things like hold down left stick then hold another button to get a menu.

They already got the controls down pretty well in many console rts games, however I'm not going to disagree, kb/m support is a little better and consoles would benefit from it.

Yes, but unknown to many... FPSs have been working pretty good on consoles for a while. Just look at Golden Eye. However, RTSs on the console are extremely watered down due to the controller. As such, the main tool itself is broke.

RTS games are best played on PC. dream431ca

I have come to that same conclusion,

even though I've tried RTS on consoles often (mostly because I want to chill on the couch), PC is really where it belongs.

That's not to say they haven't made advancements with console controls.... but there is no substitute for M/KB. Even putting that aside, consoles still seem to have the same lag problems when you get into the hundreds of units (something that hasn't changed from C&C on PS1 or SC on 64)

That's because it's a turned base game ya nitwit.. And Civ Rev was a great game. And no this isn't just my opinion, it's fact.

No its most definately opinion. Its my biggest disappointment this gen, well second after Spore. TC I would say "cows" and "lems" (by definition fans of that respective console and not PC gamers) have absolutely no idea what a real genuine and exciting strategy game is like and thus you see all the "I hate RTS's" "least favourite genre" responses.

Scores, such as gamespots, are also relevant to the platform they are on and the equivalent games on that platform. Honestly how well do you think it would have scored on the PC? Also scores are a reviewers opinion, not fact.

EDIT to put it in perspective Civ 4 = 8.5 on GS Civ Rev on 360 = 9.0 LMAO

In my opinion, yes Civ Rev is better. Is that fact? Absolutely not. Is it a fact Civ Rev is a good or even great game, yes. Like I pointed out. Yes, lower console standards probably helps this game in achieving greatness. Who knows.. All I know is that most crirtics liked it. So did I. Very fun, addicting gameplay.

I prefer playing almost all types of games on my PS3 rather than my PC (even though my PC can handle better graphics), except for RTS games which are almost unplayable on consoles. Sure maybe I would be able to enjoy them if I didn't know how much better they are with a mouse and keyboard. Can't even image how bad Starcraft would be on a console.

See that I can totally accept. I found it shallow and far too short. But I can see why some people might really like. (As an addendum I play civ on marathon speed from ancient times in a huge world! So I admit Civ Rev was not exactly my type of game)

But Halo Wars looks like its shaping up to be more of an RTT rather than an RTS. I saw a video of it where a person wanted to build 3 buildings and all he did was click the open pad spots, then select the buildings that he wanted and bam, his 3 buildings just rose right out of the ground. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, with a series like Halo, you would want the gameplay to be combat centric. Base building and resource gathering would just seem a bit out of place in a Halo game, but with the gameplay being focused on combat with so few units I have to wonder how much strategic depth is really in that game. I'm only going to remain cautiously hopeful about Halo Wars, but at worse I will be renting it just for the story.

I prefer playing almost all types of games on my PS3 rather than my PC (even though my PC can handle better graphics), except for RTS games which are almost unplayable on consoles. Sure maybe I would be able to enjoy them if I didn't know how much better they are with a mouse and keyboard. Can't even image how bad Starcraft would be on a console.ikwal
While I never actually played it, it was proven possible to play Starcraft on a console, remember Starcraft 64 anyone? And I bet with alot of the advances that they made in modern console RTS's, it would be able to play even better if it was remade today. I still believe that KB/M is the ultimate controller, and that it will be for quite some time. I think that the vast majority of games would benefit (or at least not suffer) from using it over any gamepad, but that doesn't mean that regular controllers are worthless, and it doesn't mean that a genre that has worked primarily with KB/M will never be functional on a gamepad. I think people really should be more open minded about this instead of just writing it off as not possible.

RTS games on consoles just are not meant to be.

Ive tried 3 and they all where horrible.

Halo Wars will be my very last attempt at giving RTS games a chance on consoles. They belong on PC, not consoles imo. Playing a RTS game with a controller is just WRONG.

RTS is about the only genre of games i play on the PC. I love them (Dawn of War being my all time favourite) but i have no problem with console RTS either. I have both LOTR and C&C 3 for the 360, and they worked great imo. Had a lot of fun, and i cant wait for Halo Wars too. People who say console RTS cant work are probably the same people who were saying console FPS couldnt work 15 years ago.

I turn on my console. I insert the game disc. I sit on the couch with my controller. Really, it isn't that difficult.

Seriously, PC gamers are too focused on comparative issues....because of this they don't get that the RTS genre is now serviceable and enjoyable on a console.

I can make groups like you do above. I can scan the map, like you do. Can I do those things as fast, as efficiently, and as effectively as KB/M? No, of course not. And can I assign a million hot keys? Nope.

But I don't have to do things the same or as well as the KB/M to make the game enjoyable. I am playing the AI, or I am playing other people with similar controls limitations...ergo, it is fair.

I don't care about crazy Koreans able to issue 6 billion commands in 0.5 seconds on Starcraft (example a hermit posted once on why I should hate RTS games on my consoles). Nor do I care whether my console RTS experience is as fast or as dynamic, or even as deep, as what can be found on the PC in general, or the PC version of specific games. I am not comparing my console experience to your PC experience.

Indeed, I don't care about PC gaming at all. I don't harbour any ill will to PC gamers...they like their thing...I like mine. Therefore, I am not obsessed with COMPARATIVE analyses of the RTS genre on PC vs Consoles. It is irrelevant to me, because PC gaming is dead to me.

Consequently, the only thing that matters is whether or not the RTS game in question is available on a console and whether its format and control scheme is workable...in other words, can I enjoy them game...which is the only measure that matters to me. Not theoretical comparisons against choices which are irrelevant to me.
