So i'm trying to play the Unreal Tournament III Titan Pack on Steam. Only it's taking TWO AND A HALF HOURS to download and install the update.

On Xbox Live, the same update would take 10 seconds for the patch, and maybe five to ten minutes for the new content.

Well who told you to buy the Steam version? The way steam patches games is by re-downloading the affected files so you could end up downloading the game numerous times.

Why did you buy this on steam? there is no benefit to it.

Bought it on Steam because it was $30 for the complete Unreal collection--every Unreal game and expansion ever released on PC. You can't beat that deal with a stick.

That is what I hate most about it and why I don't buy anything from there unless I have to. I don't like the way it patches games and the fact that you can't download the patch yourself. Sometimes it is slow as hell.

At least Steam has the update. I remember reading XBL didn't get the UT3 update because M$ hates giving their customers free stuff.

Free content that takes awhile to dl > no content.

I like steam...it's a neat device valve created to control content while letting the user contol many options as well.

I came home from school today to discover that my copy of UT3 had already been updated for me, no need for me to download the patch online and wait when it autoupdates :D

Uh oh, time for some lemming PR:

We lemming must apologize for the TC thread regarding Steam. We maintain a "360 vs PS3 only" stance that we never stray from. Any lemming that debates regarding Hermit issues does not reflect the lemming ideas as a whole. This is a isolated incident and this behaviour is not condoned by us in any shape or form.

Sorry Hermits, well take care of the TC, forgive us.

Um, both the patch and Titan Pack Expansion are +1gb so obviously it would take time to download. I manually download it for my retail UT3 and it took me couple of minutes, probably at least 45 minutes.

I had similar trouble, and I was only trying to download the update - I already had a retail copy of UT3 installed in Steam. After about the 6th reset to zero percent, I went ahead and scrapped the Steam install, downloaded the patch from FileShack, and reinstalled my retail copy. That took about 25 minutes. So, for the same amount of data (just the update), it took plain old HTTP less than half an hour. Steam, on the other hand, was falling over more often than a drunk chick at a kegger. You do the math.

Can't say I've ever had a single problem with it. I add items to my download queue from the website in the morning, head to work, come home, turn the Xbox on, and before I'm done making dinner my content is downloaded. That includes Lost & Damned, which I'd expect put quite a load on the Live servers.

TC check your internet settings and port settings. It could be your computer setup rather than Steam itself. For instance a lot of my friends who complain about PSN/XBL slow downloads, find out that if they put their X360/PS3 on their router's DMZ they get 3x the speed....dont put your PC in your DMZ though :|
