[QUOTE="lowe0"] So, for the same amount of data (just the update), it took plain old HTTP less than half an hour. Steam, on the other hand, was falling over more often than a drunk chick at a kegger. You do the math.lowe0

I'm sure Xbox live is a flawless system...

Can't say I've ever had a single problem with it. I add items to my download queue from the website in the morning, head to work, come home, turn the Xbox on, and before I'm done making dinner my content is downloaded. That includes Lost & Damned, which I'd expect put quite a load on the Live servers.

And how much is Xbox live compared to steam?

On the flipside... I downloaded the 15GB's worth ofEmpire: Total War in a mere 1 hour 20 minutes. Meanwhile downloading some XBLA games(notably Braid) took me 3 hours....

cainetao11

Whoa! what do you have dial up? I download anything in half hour or less from live.

You can download a 15Gb file in 30m or less?

Please tell me you're joking.

It took me quite a while to get the download for the Titan pack started (content servers have been extremely busy tonight), but once I did it was transferring at around 1.2MB/sec. A bit slower than I'd like, but that's about 2-3x faster than I EVER see with XBL downloads (which is pathetic considering I pay $5/month for it, while Steam has no subscription charge.)

On XBL, patches are less than 2MB. That's a requirement that Microsoft enforces. The patch would take about 10 seconds to download and the game would restart. However all the PATCH does is update the executable to the new version. There would also be a separate CONTENT download from Marketplace, and THAT would probably take 5-10 minutes. The CONTENT download would be optional, but highly recommended (because content downloads cannot be mandatory; another XBL rule--the game can't just stop working until you download a piece of content.)

So, on Steam, you add the Titan pack by downloading one giant 'thing' that combines both the version 2.0 patch and the Titan Pack content--massive, 2-hour download. On Xbox Live, you'd download the version 2.0 patch (automatic 10 second download) which would 'encourage' (but not require) you to download the Titan Pack content from Marketplace (fast, 5-10 minute download.)

And FYI, I routinely download movies and TV shows in HD from XBL in 5-10 minutes. We're talking 2GB files, at least, in under 10 minutes. And Steam is ROUTINELY slow. The first time I downloaded UT3 was a month ago, well before the current free weekend promotion, and it STILL took 2-3 hours.

And speaking of free weekends, Xbox Live has been doing those regularly (but not frequently) since the 360 launched.

Bull. Having used both extensively, I'm finding this really hard to believe.

For me, ~1GB demos on Xbox Live can take upwards of 20-30 minutes. Pathetic content delivery speed, especially for a PAID service. Steam is consistently much, much faster for me:

[QUOTE="UnnDunn"]

So i'm trying to play the Unreal Tournament III Titan Pack on Steam. Only it's taking TWO AND A HALF HOURS to download and install the update.

On Xbox Live, the same update would take 10 seconds for the patch, and maybe five to ten minutes for the new content.

Bah.

lowe0

You're downloading a complete game... how do you expect to download in 10sec...????

I had similar trouble, and I was only trying to download the update - I already had a retail copy of UT3 installed in Steam. After about the 6th reset to zero percent, I went ahead and scrapped the Steam install, downloaded the patch from FileShack, and reinstalled my retail copy. That took about 25 minutes. So, for the same amount of data (just the update), it took plain old HTTP less than half an hour. Steam, on the other hand, was falling over more often than a drunk chick at a kegger. You do the math.

It resetting to zero percent doesn't mean the whole download is reset to 0%. I thought this as well until I really checked it out. It nearly picks up from where ever it disconnected and starts back from 0 instead of say whatever percent it had originally reached.

Example: a 100 mb download cuts off at 20%

Instead of looking at the download as 100 again steam only sees the 80% that's left to download. So the actual download percent when you restart the download is picked up from there and thus the percentage download is back at 0, but you aren't redling the entire thing, just the 80% that's left.

The only thing we should agree is steam being free and Xbox live not... only to expect better service for the one you pay is normal.

Another reason Steam isn't as good as XBL...

Wanted to get some Titan Pack action tonight, so I logged on to Steam and checked the friends list to see who was playing. Found a friend, clicked "join" and got this:

Why can't I join this game?

Oh yeah. That's Steam right there. The future of online. Fully unified.

On Xbox Live, I never see any such errors. It just connects me to my friend online and we get to fragging. No muss, no fuss.

You get what you pay for, people.

So you didn't connect to a server and it's steam's problem and not the server's? Oh hey how are those servers on XBL?? Oh wait...

I pay for 12Mb/s down, 2Mb/s up..but I regularly see speeds a bit faster than that:

Now, what I don't understand is how you can download "2GB in under 10 minutes" with XBL..when that transfer speed (>~3.3MB/s) is nearly twice what your connection is even capable of -_-

Because he is lying and just trying to BS an argument to hope he somehow comes out on top. I'm guessing he hoped you wouldn't actually check to see if it was information he provided would add up.

Don't ask me; XBL doesn't show transfer rate. All I know is last night I downloaded an episode of Enterprise in HD. It was 1.8GB. And it was done in about 10 minutes. Took about 30 seconds to get to 5% and "ready to play".

I really really have to laugh at just how low consolites are going these days to bash PC.

Really, you are making yourselves look desperate now. Comparing a paid service. a 1st party on at that to a FREE 3rd party application, ROFL. Steam is fantastic, like most PC programs it can have problems, some people have them, most don't. The fact is its an amazing service considering it can do everything live can and much more. The fact it is totally free just makes it more appealing.

If you don't like it, don't use it, thats the beauty of PC, we are not restricted to one online service lol, oh how i love PC. Enjoy your live lems lol.

Hey, I agree with you (except for the "do everything live can" part.) I think Steam is pretty freakin' awesome, and it's the best thing to happen to PC gaming in... well, ever. It's just... not as good as Xbox Live, despite what all the hermits say.

I hated Steam at first..but it's grown on me over time, and I've been using it a ton as of late.

Explain how it is not at least on par, if not better than XBL? It does everything Xbox Live does (along with a few unique things of its own), and its content delivery servers are consistently faster (from my experience.) On top of all that, it's a subscription-less service with no monthly fees, unlike XBL.

Then you have things like support for dedicated servers, game modifications, custom maps...which, I'd say, puts it far out in front of XBL as an online service...

Hey, I love the content on XBL. I actually picked up Braid recently and I'm loving it (before that, I purchased The Lost and the Damned.) It's passable as an online service for its content alone, but nothing it does justifies $5/month when Steam does a similar (and arguably better -- certainly better from my view) job for no monthly fee.

Steam, ultimately, is a band-aid. It's a patch to help smooth over what is essentially an anarchic gaming landscape. Now Steam does an amazingly good job at that, but it's never going to be able to match the kinds of things a designed-from-the-ground-up service like Xbox Live can do. For example, the things you mentioned... dedicated servers, game mods, custom maps... none of those have anything to do with Steam. They were there before Steam was even a twinkle in Gabe Newell's eye, and they'll be there long after Valve goes belly-up. Steam shines when you are playing a Valve game--you get the achievements, the custom server browser, Valve Anti-Cheat, things like that--because Valve custom-builds their games for Steam so it's an integrated experience. But as soon as you step off the Valve reservation, the experience quickly falls apart, as illustrated by my "server not responding" screenshot. When you move to XBL, every game is designed to support it, and when there's that baseline, you can start doing some really innovative things. Things like TrueSkill, cross-game invites, stats with attachments, global presence/player tracking and more. Those features depend on tight integration between the game and the service, something that neither Steam nor PSN have. They depend on a robust service infrastructure that not only provides those features, but also the servers, databases and manpower to support them and make sure they work, 24/7/365. That's something neither Sony nor Valve have.

That's something neither Sony nor Valve have.

First off he said SUPPORT for those things, understand you can find servers using mods through steam, something XBL doesn't have since console games on the whole don't have mods. Your server not responding screenshot is a problem for the server, and many games use thier own anti cheat programs which is why valve doesn't need to intergrate it's own, achievements are worthless, and again most games have thier own server browsers, so once again valve does not need to integrate these things into steam. Also your server not responding screenshot can easily but trumped by someone posting thier lolgears 2 online video, how horrendous that is. Using a screenshot which you can easily replicate by typing in a false server IP is not making you look smart and is far from substanial evidence. Every game HAS to be designed with XBL, devs have no choice in the matter as in with other closed systems. Also you can cross game invite using steam with any game, stop trying to be silly and spout lies. The rest of your *advantages* don't mean squat. Trueskill? Really?, DOW uses that and it's honestly not good at all. Steam does not have this sort of stream line integrating because they choose not to do so as most devs have thier own versions built in for thier own games, also lol @ needing a robust mount of people to manage a P2P network. Damn I'm sure things like limewire needs tons of people  . You also forget steam has free weekends and DISCOUNTS ON GAMES, up to 50% off, something XBL will NEVER give you.

Steam has everything live has and one up on live. Steam DOES NOT COST MONEY. Also realise you are comparing a 3rd party program with a FIRST party program, the fact steam is better is laughable and the fact XBL costs money is down right SAD.

[QUOTE="UnnDunn"]Hey, I agree with you (except for the "do everything live can" part.) I think Steam is pretty freakin' awesome, and it's the best thing to happen to PC gaming in... well, ever. It's just... not as good as Xbox Live, despite what all the hermits say.UnnDunn

Things like P2P dedicated servers .... thus ill never be switching over. No mods b/c Xbxlive is a closed-circuit system (the closest thing you will see for years is Forge on H3 which is a joke compared to what people have made in games like CS ... oh wait CS IS a mod itself.... but seriously p2p matchmaking kills games like Battlefield 2 ever making it to light of day on a console ... its just not reasonable and conceivable that a p2p network can handle massive maps with 64+ people on it. And stats are global in games like that too ... and beyond. My CS1.6 server has stats down to the limb on where people shoot, how often they plant bombs in spots on any of my 3200 (yes 3,000 maps) maps and accuracy per gun per map .... so i dont see what you mean. Steamworks is so easy to integrate into a game its incredible ... say what you will though, obviously gaming for almost 2 decades has my brain flawed somewhere.

UnnDunn

LOL

I never had any problems playing friends, i used to do it real way, call my friend and tell him name of server im going to join.

simple, .

plus that pic's fake.

There not the same thing, that's why i wouldn't compare them.

[QUOTE="cobrax75"]

when XBL starts offering free weekends than maybe you can go and complain.

lundy86_4

When XBL starts offering anything free, i'm down... but that'll never happen

Not true. There's lots of free DLC, Themes,GamerPics and even an arcade game or two sometimes.

Hi, I'm UnnDunn, from the future, where if you see a friend playing a joinable online game, you can join by pressing 1 button. Oh wait, that's not the future, that's the present. What year are you living in?

too bad the join friends game feature doesnt even work half the time

Don't own a 360 but I do own a PS3 with PSN. And I can safely say that Steam is very good and better than PSN for these reasons.

1. Its free (doesn't make it better than PSN but better than XBL)

2. Free weekends

3. Weekend deals...I got Bioshock for $5 over Christmas and got Left4Dead for $25 about a month ago. Thats an amazing deal for a great game that came out recently

4. Good social community...You can chat to friends in game, joing their games, join groups and clans, voice chat, etc.

Anyway, Steam is awesome!

Almost forgot, all my downloads for Steam have gone very fast. 600 Kb/s+ for Left4Dead and Bioshock which downloaded them in about an hour. However, the Unreal free weekend download is taking forever (70Kb/s right now). Probably cause of all the traffic.

So you didn't connect to a server and it's steam's problem and not the server's? Oh hey how are those servers on XBL?? Oh wait...

Espada12

Who cares about the server details, or even whether there's a server at all? Either he's playing a game against his friend like he told the software to do, or he isn't. One is success, one is failure, the rest of the details are utterly irrelevant to the user.

Frozzik
Consolites? don't you mean lemmings because I don't see any cows or wii-people in here bashing STEAM.As a matter of fact the cows and sheep are siding with the hermits on this issue.

Steam >>> all

You can go to the options and make it so steam doesnt download the updates for you. Then you can go download them from another site or what ever.

Dont have to have steam do the updates for ya, although i dont mind it, as ive never had any problems with it.

Turn off any anti virus or peerguardian programs, also any firewall stuff can effect steam not working properly.

Ive had steam the last two years and not had one proplem joining a game. Check your firewall, anti virus stuff,etc... man

Its kinda wierd that ive never had a problem with steam in 2+ years (besides it being a little slow of a download when a BIG new game first comes out, just like on xboxlive when halo3 beta was out, everyone was downloading at once and caused it to go very slow).
