[QUOTE="Velocitas8"][QUOTE="UnnDunn"]Hey, I agree with you (except for the "do everything live can" part.) I think Steam is pretty freakin' awesome, and it's the best thing to happen to PC gaming in... well, ever. It's just... not as good as Xbox Live, despite what all the hermits say.UnnDunn
I hated Steam at first..but it's grown on me over time, and I've been using it a ton as of late.
Explain how it is not at least on par, if not better than XBL? It does everything Xbox Live does (along with a few unique things of its own), and its content delivery servers are consistently faster (from my experience.) On top of all that, it's a subscription-less service with no monthly fees, unlike XBL.
Then you have things like support for dedicated servers, game modifications, custom maps...which, I'd say, puts it far out in front of XBL as an online service...
Hey, I love the content on XBL. I actually picked up Braid recently and I'm loving it (before that, I purchased The Lost and the Damned.) It's passable as an online service for its content alone, but nothing it does justifies $5/month when Steam does a similar (and arguably better -- certainly better from my view) job for no monthly fee.
Steam, ultimately, is a band-aid. It's a patch to help smooth over what is essentially an anarchic gaming landscape. Now Steam does an amazingly good job at that, but it's never going to be able to match the kinds of things a designed-from-the-ground-up service like Xbox Live can do. For example, the things you mentioned... dedicated servers, game mods, custom maps... none of those have anything to do with Steam. They were there before Steam was even a twinkle in Gabe Newell's eye, and they'll be there long after Valve goes belly-up. Steam shines when you are playing a Valve game--you get the achievements, the custom server browser, Valve Anti-Cheat, things like that--because Valve custom-builds their games for Steam so it's an integrated experience. But as soon as you step off the Valve reservation, the experience quickly falls apart, as illustrated by my "server not responding" screenshot. When you move to XBL, every game is designed to support it, and when there's that baseline, you can start doing some really innovative things. Things like TrueSkill, cross-game invites, stats with attachments, global presence/player tracking and more. Those features depend on tight integration between the game and the service, something that neither Steam nor PSN have. They depend on a robust service infrastructure that not only provides those features, but also the servers, databases and manpower to support them and make sure they work, 24/7/365. That's something neither Sony nor Valve have.First off he said SUPPORT for those things, understand you can find servers using mods through steam, something XBL doesn't have since console games on the whole don't have mods. Your server not responding screenshot is a problem for the server, and many games use thier own anti cheat programs which is why valve doesn't need to intergrate it's own, achievements are worthless, and again most games have thier own server browsers, so once again valve does not need to integrate these things into steam. Also your server not responding screenshot can easily but trumped by someone posting thier lolgears 2 online video, how horrendous that is. Using a screenshot which you can easily replicate by typing in a false server IP is not making you look smart and is far from substanial evidence. Every game HAS to be designed with XBL, devs have no choice in the matter as in with other closed systems. Also you can cross game invite using steam with any game, stop trying to be silly and spout lies. The rest of your *advantages* don't mean squat. Trueskill? Really?, DOW uses that and it's honestly not good at all. Steam does not have this sort of stream line integrating because they choose not to do so as most devs have thier own versions built in for thier own games, also lol @ needing a robust mount of people to manage a P2P network. Damn I'm sure things like limewire needs tons of people  . You also forget steam has free weekends and DISCOUNTS ON GAMES, up to 50% off, something XBL will NEVER give you.
Steam has everything live has and one up on live. Steam DOES NOT COST MONEY. Also realise you are comparing a 3rd party program with a FIRST party program, the fact steam is better is laughable and the fact XBL costs money is down right SAD.
