Whether Sheep and Cows will deny this, or Xbox Fans, let get the facts straight.
I have never seen a launch of a system (Coleco Adam excluded) this fucking messed up before in my life it's absolutely stunning.
PS4
Sony was pushing the PS4 and letting MS take on the pain early on by ACCIDENT. Which changed Sony's strategy when they showed the console at E3, and wanted to capitalize on the Pre-e3 MS console reveal as fast as possible, especially in the U.S.
The Pre-e3 MS reveal despite saving the games for E3, which made sense, was met with backlash for barely any reason and Sony wanted to capitalize on that.
Because of the early hurt for Microsoft and it's Xbox One, Sony completely slipped on effort and decided to just ride with what they had taking hits at MS and getting tons of praise until MS started slowly turning themselves around and they started implementing things late.
We have a console with questionable reliability, no showing of extended use of the new controller, delayed games, a pay wall which they tried to hide at E3, and a TON of features that can't be accessed without a Day one patch, which the Xbox still had a main complaint of despite the turn around.
The lack of providing actual full PS4 demo units to retailers or conventions, and the lack of launch focus, Sony once again like the PS3 got cocky. he launch may partially still be in Sonys favor based on what has already happened, but that happened with the PS3 as well and that ended up in last place.
Don't forget the lack of launch support.
Xbox One
Xbox One despite the fanboys, was changing the policies to relate to PC gaming and other distribution programs wanted by fans with a test on XBL with a few games that did similar functions although not fully. This ended up backfiring with insane rumors of NSA take overs, trying to rob people of there money, saying that lending and used games despite gamespots support would hurt consumers and kill the industry.
The biggest issue that even I had with the above was that they said NOTHING the WHOLE time from the pre-e3 till the E3, they said nothing, not even a twisted lie to try and slow the hurt, they just watched and stared at people. They even indirectly attacked people and stated nothing was going to change which ended up being an INTERNAL conflict over what the head of the entertainment division (Excluding Mattrick) actually wanted to do, which eventually led to a reversal.
The reversal was praised, but then there were still and even presently still people trying to cause conspiracies about what they will do next. Still having the Kinect Bundled after that decision, even after admitting it is not technically needed just caused more issues. But after awhile the only major complaint that is still focused on was the Day one patch.
The same day one patch the PS4 needs for a different set of functions as well, including functions the Xbox One had at launch without the patch,
I would say that MS's E3, and game announcements/trailers are the only real reason why they even got out of the whole that was more dug for them from the ignorant consumers than themselves but they were still largely part of the problem. Things are much better now, but there are still issues just like the PS4 has currently, that are inexcusable.
Wii U
Like the Adam of back in the day, the Wii U was actually made filled with promises that were completely broke. They wanted to grab third-parties, especially western devs, which they had lost since the NES, they wanted to target everyone and have a market for the hardcore, they wanted to bring hardcore innovation, more support for games in general, bring up the online and app features, expand their First-party, and offer connectivity with portables. These are among the other promises.
And like the Adam except one thing, online, which is still debated, everything was bullshit. The Wii U started grabbing 3rd-party support but then dropped it, they did the same with the 3DS, but then eventually they did manage to get a lot of eastern third-party support for the 3DS, which did not come to the Wii U.
They focused too much on the controller to the point were it caused and still causes confusion of what the Wii U is. Is it even a new system? Probably not. Maybe. I don't know. The lack of advantages shown with the controller other than certain online functions was also just horribly non-informal.
They expected people to buy the games they threw out at launch, a Wii upscale and a tech demo pretty much, and priced the Wii U deceptively so that the cheaper version with a game separate would cost more than the expensive version bundled with a game.
They cut back on core gaming and are not aiming for an audience that I am not even sure if they know who it is. They have been in a low sales situation until present day with little to no interest. They have not upped effort, they have not upped advertising, and they are trying to just put the Wii U on as many shelves as possible, making deals with certain retailers worldwide, yet they don't put effort to make a reason for someone to pick the damn thing up with all that shelf space.
OUYA
Technically, if you count this as a console, this is as of now, the first place console if going by Ouyas numbers are true (until X! ad PS4 launch) Ouya was a product filled with promises and won the support of the little people in the first massive success in crowd funding (which I believe is a flawed market)
And what a mess that was. The launch was not even ready even though it was promised. There are STILL PEOPLE NOW who helped fund the project that do not have one yet, and that happened since launch. They went back on their world launch and focused almost entirely on the U.S.
They showed tons of games during pre-launch, only to end up with 80% of the launch list un available. TO this day the thing barely has 400 games and like 12 exclusives. Which was also promised, and half-assed dev kits, which is actually the system itself, completely different from what they showed.
Ouya has been hiding numbers of software sales which are a 15th or more of the hardware sales they are claiming and want a new Ouya every year. They are JUST NOW getting to Europe, and finally making slight real profit that can be tracked.
The side effect is that there words twists have caused people to think this is a successful market even for handhelds, and there are million dollar projects just to put android games on a freaking TV. Sure, one of them is a powerful as the PS4/X1, but that is still besides the point.
OVERALL
This is probably the most painful to watch console launch. Every console launch into the first few months to a year or so has been handled like a crippled hobo high on crack. It's almost as painful as the year 2012 campaign by the Reps. Almost like nobody gave a shit and everyone thinks all their loyal consumers or buyers who trust them will just eat what dog food they throw on the floor. All of these prepared launches and launches are disasters in the literal sense of the word.
It amazes me how anyone can defend any of them in most areas. Sure, one could say console X may be fine against console Y and yeah, there are a lot of you here, but ALL of you deny WHAT IS THERE and deny that all of these pre-, present, and post launches are nightmares that are inexcusable and are in the real world, why almost what, 20 million+ gamers world wide don't want next gen yet. And more if you add the ones that are like I will wait and see.
