But if the market becomes flooded with casuals there will be no motivation for non casual games to be made

If that occurs then the market would be flooded with casual games. People would get sick of them all before long and hardcore games would re-emerge not long after. During this time though Hardcore games will still be produced. Nintendo would not let their hardcore franchises die and they would not let down their hardcore fanbase.

Yup anyone who Thinks Ninty is going to stop making its hardcore games is crazy

Never once did i say in any of my posts that hardcore games wouldnt be made any more, i simply stated that it would seem that hardcore games are being put on the back burner by ninty and what would happen if other developers follwed suit

Go check the first 9 months of the DS's library, chock full of casual minigames and ports and liscensed garbage, and yet now the DS has an excellent blend of games

yes but handhelds are a totally different situation. I think handhelds are by default a casual gaming device. Why does it seem like my post is being totally misread??  YES there will be hardcore games but the ratio of hardcore to casual will be a vast difference between the two

Do you consider GTA, Madden, Final Fantasy, Zelda and Halo to be non-casual? Those games are very popular and they always sell well - they are very popular with casual gamers.

The Wii is a popular console with casuals, but there will always be a market for games such as those. So don't worry yourself. If the market is innundated with casual mini-games, then lots of those games won't be purchased. Do you honestly expect a casual gamer to own like 10 games that have nothing but mini-games in them? It's not going to happen - everybody likes variety.

The only difference between the two is portability, the two markets aren't as different as people think, as we can see the Wii is following in the DS's footsteps and succeeding, but the DS still has plenty of games for the hardcore, as will the Wii

I would like the opinions of the rest of you guys on whether you think its possible that soon developers may cater to the casuals and that blockbuster games like GOW, HAlO, ZELDA may be put on the back of the line?

Well, considering the fact that Zelda sold to 90% of all Wii sales, no

This is about the argument that because there's been a focus on bringing games to appeal to non-gamers, we will be left out with our so-called 'hardcore games'.

Well, no.

How much does it cost to create a game to cater for nongamers? these games would be like Wiisports, Brain Age, Sudoku, Wii Health etc. I'm guessing, not a lot at all. And so, it would hardly affect resources which are used to create games to cater for us.

Wiisports was just a bunch of tech demos, added extra contents, and polished just enough that we can enjoy it on it's own merits. Yet, this was also what sold the Wii for non-gamers.

...................................................................................................

(How much does it cost to make these sort of games?)

...................................................................................................

Bottom Line

Games that cater to us will still be made. Non-gamers will have very little effect on us.

"Non-gamers are stealing our games!". *cries* mwuaaaaa!... NO. Only fanboys dramatize the situation.

[QUOTE="Dualshockin"]Nintendo's approach is not going to benefit the industry,I want them to succeed to a certain extent, but if casual gaming is given more importance than hardcore gaming,us gamers will have alot of mini-games in the future.Dualshockin

Enough with the Mini game arguement!!! When was the last time Nintendo release another mini game other than Wii play??? Sure Mario Party 8 is releasing next month but where in its timeline will they release another first party minigames??? They haven't made one for the DS as well!!!

Mario Party is coming out next month, that's a minigame. Nintendo's future titles arent epic games, look at their lineup.

uhh.....Metroid prime 3?

Let me start by adimtting up front, I have no idea what is going to happen, only thoughts, and some fears.

My problem with the Wii is based on Fear, not a logical deduction, I admit that.

I am concerned, because as the Wii gains popularity, game devlopers are shifting rescources to the Wii.  This makes sense, it is an easier system to devlop for, and has a large market to sell your games to, thus increaeing profits.  When you add in the fact that you can probably port your Wii game to the PS2, that is 100 million more potential customers, and no need for high def graphics or super involved stories.  The problem is, those are exactly the kind of games I like to play.

I want games like Resistance, Lair, GeOW, GOW2, Kameo, MGS4, and Mass EEffect.  I enjoyed LOZ:TP, but soon after, I sold my Wii.  Why?  Because I was able to sell LOZ and the Wii for a profit, and if and when more of the games that I like to play come out, I will get another one, because that will be in the distant future.  (as an aside, I would like a crack at Paper Mario...)

I truly believe that Nintendo will bring the goods when it comes to games.  My fear is that the third party games will be crap and because they (third party developers) will go in with the attitude than it must be simple for the casuals.  This will be a double loss, because it will also prevent those same rescources from being spent on the devlopment of games that I like and want to play.

I am not convinced that this will happen.  Perhaps the low attach rate for Wii sales is a predictor of things to come.  Perhaps all these "casuals" bying Wii systems won't buy more games nd the disenchanted developers will go back to the hardcores.  Or perhaps, even better, the casuals will begin to become more sophisticated in thier tastes, and new and inovative games will continue to come out.  I just don't know.

I think of my DS as an example, though.  The 1st party games are excellent, but otherwise...

Of course, I could be wrong.  This is just my fear.
