Squeenix are now Master Trolls

I'm okay with it, LR has really impressed me and as far as interesting female characters she is actually waaaaay more fleshed out than most female characters in western or japanese games. Lightning meets up with old friends in LR and so far every encounter has been great. Noel is probably my favorite character out of all FF right up there next to Zidane.
@ReadingRainbow4: Why are you being such an idiot? She's one of Squares most popular characters and its just a cameo. You know, the stuff various other FF characters have done? Like Cloud being in Final Fantasy tactics or Gilgamesh who's in damn near every game?
Because she's just shit, those characters were much more interesting and well designed. I mean Gilgamesh is a summon, how the hell will lightning fit into that roll, nothing about her makes any sense it's just squares attempt at getting these hopeless geeks enamored through an armpit fetish.
They need to move on, the 13 series has been nothing but a series of failures.
God damn man, I'd rather see a throw away character like Quinna make a cameo appearance.
Why is SE so obsessed with the XIII universe and Lightning? It's like they're just being stubborn at this point. "If we just keep pushing this shit, eventually they'll have to like it!"... wtf man. I wouldn't even put Lightning in my top 40 characters of the series.
Played a bit of FFXIV today and did a quick FATE at Coerthas Highlands and when the mob died there was some flavour RP text about Lightning...
Wish i could remember exactly what it said but i remember thinking wtf when i saw it since it's been a month or two since i played the game.
she is super popular in Japan,

Japan ranks their favorite female characters from the Final Fantasy series
Lightning beat out all the other FF female characters in fan polls. But the problem is that you can't sell an entire game by relying on a character's popularity alone. For an FF game, it's way more important to get the gameplay and story right, which Square Enix have consistently failed to do with the XIII games.
That looks like one of the worst botched polls I've ever seen.
1. Lightning
2. Aerith
3. Yuna
Yup I don't believe it.

For a Japanese audience, that looks about right to me.
1. Lightning is a "badass" super-soldier who provides Japanese fangirls with a "girl power" fantasy. Don't underestimate the fangirls, especially in Japan where they make up a huge chunk of the fanbase.
2. Aerith is the most popular female character from the most popular FF game, and was at the core of its most iconic scene. No surprises there.
3. Yuna is the most popular female character from Japan's most-loved FF game. Let's not forget the 2006 Famitsu poll, where Japanese fans voted FFX the greatest game of all time.

:edit note:
Yup that's a botched poll, looked at the male ranking and indeed it's a botched poll.

You need to keep in mind that there are differences in taste between Japanese fans and Western fans. Lulu and Vivi are no doubt very popular among Western fans, but that doesn't necessarily mean Japanese fans will love them just as much. Also, let's not forget that they are both supporting characters, so that would naturally be a disadvantage when competing against leading characters.

What do you mean botched? Why would a magazine have an agenda to promote different characters from the same series? I think you're taking this a bit too seriously.

To promote what they think of something or rig it so it stirs peoples jimmies and create hits (come on you should know this). Also a no named magazine claiming "Japan has spoken who's their fav character" is like Gamefaqs doing one of their polls claiming "Americans have spoken who's their fav video game character is".
There's characters on that poll that shouldn't even be on there (Seriously Edgar?) while there's characters that I mine you who are pretty damn popular among FF fans around the world who aren't even on the list. For example Lulu is a pretty damn popular character among male FF fans, specially in NA and even Japan.

What about it? Zack, Cloud and Zidane are all fan favourites, both in the East and the West.
Also, it was an online poll, not a magazine poll, so it's highly unlikely there's any agenda like you're trying to make it out to be.

Yes cause we all know Edgar was an amazing character
Oh wait he wasn't, you should stop being such a tool.
I think the FF directors have some sort of Lightning fetish, most soulless and boring character in FF history and yet she's pushed the most...lol wut?
The older Final Fantasies were successes and they moved on. So SE should do the same with this one as well. Move on. Create new worlds and characters, don't get lazy.

Your conspiracy theory makes no sense. It was just an online poll on some Japanese fan forum. No need to get so worked up over it.
