https://www.gamerevolution.com/news/688435-gaming-pc-ban-california-colorado-hawaii-oregon-vermont-washington

California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington are beginning to prevent gamers from buying high-spec gaming PCs due to power consumption regulations. Adding certain components to a PC can result in it breaching power consumption rules, effectively locking gamers in these states out of the highest settings and best gaming experience.

California is turning into a nightmare. Hawaii makes sense. Those others? Well other than Colorado, I who really cares about those states?

This explains what's going on better and isn't just hyperbole. It's mainly for PCs that consume too much power in their sleep modes. High power gaming systems are actually exempt due to their expandability

Edit: Pedro beat me to it. See video in that post

"Consistent with the enforcement discretion granted to the CEC in Public Resources Code section 25402.11 and delegated to the CEC’s executive director by California Code of Regulations, Title 20, sections 1608-1609, companies that have elected to voluntarily comply with the new regulations may do so immediately. Any company that has failed to comply with the new requirements effective December 9, 2021, may be subject to compliance and enforcement actions covering covered products within this category that are sold or offered for sale in California on or after this date"

Dude, it's pretty straightforward. Certain products are being blocked from being used in PCs in California. If you want to purchase said components, and put them in your PC, you can't.

Pretty simple.

I don't see the problem. As one of the states likely going to be experiencing these worsening heat waves, they need to be proactive. The power grid needs to keep up. And they keep having water issues.

That being said, southern California is covered in silicon, sunshine, petroleum, and tons of open space, everything they need to make photovoltaic farms.

People really need to come to realization that we've taken our late 20th century lifestyles for granted.

Yeah... these state governments are pathetic. It reminds me of the plastic straw banning when CA people have literal tons of trash going into the ocean front and sidewalks full of human feces. San Fran has an actual poop patrol. 💩

@shadyacshuns: ok. First of all….that’s not the entire story here. Homeless folks from all over the United States are being pushed over to Cali. Ask me, I would know because I’m a resident.

Second…have you people even considered the fact that these high end PC are consuming way more electricity then they should?? Every couple of days here in the summer we have a flex alert and people voluntarily conserve electricity.

I’m not saying everything cali does is right, but this is very close to, if not gaslighting. All I see are accusations and yet pointing the finger won’t fix anything….

Why read on the factual information when it's so much more fun to cry about the bullshit you made up in your own mind? That's internet 101, not to mention that it's the same as complaining that car manufacturers are forced to make cars that give you better MPG than they would otherwise.

Every appliance in your house is more energy efficient than previous versions. Do you think that just happened by coincidence? It is almost as if you kids have no understanding of the world. My God, regulation is going to force manufacturers to make PCs that don't draw as much power...in standby. The horror.

Let's go back to fridges that draw enough power to light your whole house. Or shit efficiency furnaces. Or cars that get 12 miles to the gallon. Freedumb.

Btw if the state knew how powerful the SSD inside a PS5 is, they would have banned every PS5 as well.

@shadyacshuns: it’s not just California. It’s all over western Canada and Oregon too. In fact there was a fire that linked up to Oregon and California county lines…and about tech companies….these are highly competitive entities. If one may see an opportunity to leave to Texas, then it’s the correct choice. There’s really no need to overanalyze the matter. California, and in specific Silicon Valley is #1 in tech.

This only affects high-end prebuild PCs, not individual PC components which you can build yourself isn't banned for doing so. That said, Alienware/Dell are being affected but this is clearly a loophole cause you can still buy prebuild high-ends from another state and just go pick it up and bring it back to California.

I live in Atlanta GA, so this is hardly an issue here.

Yeah, sure, it's the outsiders that elected the trash pushing one silly environmental regulation after the next. Remember, California's problems aren't the laws. It's not even the people who write the laws. It's the idiots who elect the people who write the laws.

Global warming leading to severe droughts caused by fossil fuels. Did you think the forest burn because of something Cali does? And do you understand that most of the forest that burned were federally owned which means the federal government is responsible for them?

Taxes plain and simple. Shocker that large corporations don't want to pay taxes huh

Right we shouldn't have any regulations. Dirty water, air and food sources should be the norm.

California has the highest population of any state. Regulations are an absolute must have whether you agree or not.
