Anyway, it's hard to imagine that the inventor of the 3.5 inch diskette, Triniton colour TV, transistor radio, walkman, CD, CD-ROM, DVD, the first home video, Blu-Ray, CELL and so on began with a rice cooker.
And it's even harder to understand that it also started the thierd biggest music company and the company with the biggest movie library, not forgetting the gross record for earnings on movies.

Sony invented the CD and DVD( and other companies here) with Phillips, the reason why other companies have payed royalties for using these formats and why Nintendo payed Sony to make a CD drive for their console.
And sorry about the radio but I was writing it in a hurry and out of my memory.
I was supposed to write the worlds first pocket transistor radio. :)
I bet it was poorly built.

What did you expect? It was Japan in the early 60's ... they just lost a major war.
Hey
The floppy disks were stolen from the original 8" disks developed by IBM, sony simply made it smaller, hardly inventing!
Cyas

3.5 became the standard and it held more data.
Are you saying that the jump from CD to DVD was hardly an accomplishment? Because the jump from 8 to 3.5 with extra storage space is just as big.
For God's sake, the 3.5 is still included in PCs you buy today, where's the 8inch drive?.

I mean just because some people used headsets with pocket radios( which were invented by Sony) you can't really call them inventors of the walkman.
Sony thought of the concept and took the risk it was to mass produce the walkman, plus Sony had enough belief in it to take the patent.

Toshiba made DVD and Sony was against them with there MMCD format kind of like today with Blu ray and HD DVD
The true story is that Sony and Phillip's MMCD was competing with Toshiba, **** and Time Warner's SD but they were forced to join and create the DVD which assembles MMCD much more than the SD.
DVD became an industry standard and to produce DVD players, one needs to license a range of patents, owned by different companies. A number of th key companies Philips, Sony, **** and Toshiba decided to license the necessary patents through one licensing agent and Philips was elected to take up the administrative role.
Do you really think that Sony would have used DVD in PS2Â when it supported another format? No.
Sony co-invented the DVD, just do a google on it, the DVD wasn't invented by one company just like the BD isn't.

Well one thing was for sure, Sony wouldn't risk another Betamax and opted to play it safe.
I guess that the lack of Movie studio support at the Betamax era is what made Sony realise that they needed a foothold in the entertainment industry to ensure backing of its future formats.
