The vita may have been a failure and cast to the side by Sony (except as a PS4 remote), but it's still got a few things going for it...as long as you're into that kind of thing

In 2015, the Vita appears to be in a terrible place. Sales have been atrocious, marketing is non-existent, and Sony has all but admitted that they’ve stopped supporting the system. Just look at the Vita’s conspicuous absence from any Sony press conferences. Whether it’s due to the rise of mobile gaming or Sony’s other major Vita screw-ups—like those exorbitantly priced memory cards—the Vita just hasn’t been able to reach a substantial audience. By any account it’s a commercial failure and has been since it launched.

Yet not all is doom and gloom for the PSP’s successor. If you look past the dismal sales, you’ll find a rather fine game machine that’s become the system of choice for fans of Japanese games, especially RPGs. It’s also chock full of indie gems, solid ports, and old-school classics. Anyone hunting for the big-budget shooters and open-world adventures that Sony originally promised will want to look elsewhere, but if you like more interesting, niche games, the Vita might be a perfect fit.

[...]

Proprietary goofery aside, the Vita remains a great gaming machine. It may have never lived up to promises of console gaming on the go. To Sony, it may be a “legacy platform,” as CEO Andrew House called it earlier this year. But somehow, Vita has turned into a must-have for RPG fans. Even if you’re not into role-playing games, the system’s got a lot to offer, which is why it’s such a shame that Sony’s mishandled it so badly. As we head into 2016, it’s clear that Sony has no plans to support Vita beyond the bare minimum. The Vita has plateaued, and our notion of the console is unlikely to change in 2016, or perhaps ever again. Yet it remains a solid piece of gaming hardware, and that’s not going to change, either.

How much longer do you think the vita will continue to drag itself along?

Speaking of dismal sales, the inferior version of the vita is currently $170

Im not buying that either, 3DS has way better RPGs and better Indie games. And most Vitas RPGs are pretty bland and shallow. They all go after that cheap low budget RPG design. They have a few gems though, but ive already played the best it has to offer bout 10-15 years ago.

For as long as Japanese developers make shit for the system.

I'll buy any and all systems/handhelds. But the Vita never made a case for its existence. AKA Not a single metal gear is on the damn thing so I'm not interested.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Gunman Clive, and Mighty Switch Force 2. Plus it did have Shovel Knight first for the longest.

You're right. That sounds much better than Hotline Miami, Spelunky, Rogue Legacy, Titan Souls, Axiom Verge, Stealth Inc, Nidhogg, Counterspy, Guacamelee, Terraria, Limbo, Resogun, Minecraft, Sound Shapes, Luftrausers, Escape Plan, etc.

Hint: It doesn't.

Vita means life. Even if it's dead, it's still life. It's therefore undead.

This is just admitting you don't know anything about the Vita.

Lets compare then, im down for a debate. For every one you name, ill name two. And until Vita gets Shantae and the Pirates Curse, im afraid it will always have better.

I have both handhelds, I don't need to see a list to know the 3DS is thoroughly outdone when it comes to indie titles. If you like Shantae, cool, but it's like saying the Wii U has more games than the PC because Toad is a really cool guy.

I never said they had more.

@Slashkice: I think i better enjoy the metaphor as follows:

3DS Indies is like making love to your girlfriend, Vita Indies are like making love to a hooker. Sure your still having sex, but sex with your girlfriend feels more rewarding. I kid i kid! Its a bad metaphor.

I guess it all depends on what games you like, i enjoy the small games that 3DS has, i get to play an insanely diverse amount of games.

The Vita despite having crap sales has a fantastic library, that's why Sony needs to put PSTV functionality on the PS4, give those games that were made for it a chance to sell on PS4. And encourgae developers to patch games for standard controls if possible, get rid of touch controls and workarounds.

Third party library is complete garbage compared to the PSP's. Still like it more than the 3DS, which I sold after 3 weeks. I just couldn't look at its fugly screen.

Vita is still a massive failure.

Some article.

"Sales bad - 2015 edition"

Since a Vita 2 is never coming, i'm not impressed at all.

Let's see some sales talk for the 3ds. What? Oh, THAT handheld sells, so it will need a little brain power to figure out if it's good or bad sales.

I was planning to buy a Vita this holiday season before Sony made absolutely clear that it was dead. I still might pick one up once it hits the $99 mark if only for remote play.

Eh, not really. There's a couple other areas where Vita wins out. It definitely has the upper hand with fighting, rhythm, and adventure games for instance.

Adventure games definitely. Fighting, I'd say they are both tied, really. Rhythm games... does 3DS not have Theatrythm, Project Diva, and Emperor Thief? I was always under the impression the two systems were tied in that regard.

EDIT: For what it's worth, I do think the Vita wins out in terms of shooters and sports games.

The 3DS is pretty poor when it comes to games now.

If you like RPG's the Vita is the system of choice.

Never said it is. I just said that's an area where Vita beats 3DS.

@Slashkice said:

With fighting games, the 3DS has Smash, but aside from that it really only has an outdated version of Street Fighter and Dead or Alive. Vita's got Guilty Gear, Marvel, SFxTekken, DoA, BlazBlue, Mortal Kombat, and other random Japanese fighters like Arcana Heart. Most of them are the latest versions available of their respective games too, which is nice.

The 3DS does have those games, but like with fighting, the Vita just has more of them. It has the two Project Diva games with a third on the way (the 3DS has the spin-off Mirai series, not Diva), DJMAX Technika, IA/VT, Dancing All Night, and Superbeat Xonic which just came out. And I guess those Senran Kagura and Neptune spin-offs too, but those look like crap.

Aight. I admittedly don't follow those genres all that much, and certainly not in handhelds, so I do apologize for the mistake.

@jg4xchamp and @charizard1605 migrating in a couple of days. I think I can persuade a bro to take the Vita. Is it worth it though, or is it more or less baggage? Kinda want to while P4:G is on sale.

Also champ factor in time to make effort to play games vs European birds. Now is the Vita worth it.

@FrozenLiquid: I'd keep it, play P4G, and then once you're done with that, you can sell it off, or, really, just keep it around, it won't go for enough to actually be worth the hassle.

Haha Vita.

The only worthwhile title on that thing is like P4G which came out back in 2012 (the same year the system died) and maybe some PS1 titles.

Bwahaha Vita.
