As a MGS fan I felt it wrapped everything up nicely. Typical MGS cheesiness and weirdness mixed with over the top melodrama and shocking twists.

8/10, good game but not as great as everyone makes it out to be. MGS2>MGS3>MGS1>MGS4

Haters always compare MGS's story to cinema and literature instead of comparing it to other games. MGS's story is top class, especially considering it's a "Stealth Action" series, most of the time these games have really sloppy shallow stories like FPS games, action games, action adventure/stealth etc. It even has a better story then 99% of RPG's where story is a major genre staple. Not to mention the insanely awesome character development and just plain imba characters and villains. You need to give credit where it's due.

Probably a 9.5 or 9.6. Fantastically cinematic, but in comparison to it's predecessor MGS3, it lacked some of the narrative surprises and gameplay novelties. I love the game to death, and it's definitely the second best in the series.

A great game but quite short in my opinion; Kojima should have stopped putting so many movies and instead make the game longer.

8/10 honestly. i admit i fell into the hype when i got this game. the issues i had with it were the long loading times with minimal gameplay. the graphics are great, not the best though... it has a couple hiccups during some events, nothing big. as for the gameplay i loved the first and third act(motorcycle?), the rest was a bit downhill for me... until the last scene with snake before the final boss. story wise it was okay compared to the older mgs... i felt that they crammed everything in, in the ending. overall, its still a good game.

I think enough time has passed to see if MGS4 will be a significant title that people will look back on. Looking back, how would you rate MGS4?

jg4xchamp
Why should our opinion of it change that drastically over the course of a couple years. I could understand a change if the game was a shallow one with it's center being only around graphics so as graphics improve it doesn't seem as good but with Metal Gear games you either like the story or you don't and you either like the game because of the story or you don't. I really don't get why people bash it for it's cinematic. The truth is if you want a deep story you can't avoid cinematics for the most part without supplementing these cut scenes with TONS and TONS of text like most RPGs do. Honestly I would rather watch an epic moment in time then hear about it from some random villager through my extensive questioning process.

You can do the cinematics, without taking the player out of it. Bioshock did it, Half Life 2 does it. Bioware RPGs do it. You can do the cinematics without repetitive dialogue, it's 2010. The standards for writing in a game should be much higher now. You can tell a profound/deep/engrossing plot if you actually keep it focused. If you try to wrap up every loose end, or even meaningless ones. Or try to define every piece of vocab in your games mythology you eventually have some aspects of the story that either are plot holes, filler, pointless, or poorly executed.

I don't know enough about Mass Effects story but I would not compare the amount of character development in the MGS franchise to the kind of character development or plot in Half Life or Bioshock. The story and characters are much deeper in MGS and for good reason, you have vast amounts of cinematics through a series of games developing them. Personally I am a movie buff and thoroughly enjoy cinematics. I have been gaming since the 80s and personally find cinematics the most entertaining way to move the story along or just give background info to the gamer. To each his own of course but cinematics have always been the reward after a tough battle since the days of Tekken on PS1 for me.

I didn't play it enough to tell, but I played about 20 minutes, and HATED IT.

I was expecting it to be really awesome from the start, and it was my first Metal Gear Solid game.

When the game was installing, it had all these ridiculous warnings saying how intense the game was, and I was so pumped to play it, and I was like, "Wtf is this?"

it is a VERY good game, one of the best this gen, the story was random at times, it was super cheesy and the cutscenes while awesome were too frequent, but those are my only complaints, it's a near flawless game IMO.

Every popular and critically acclaimed game will have haters and MGS4 is not exception. Course there is nothing wrong with that, after all no one game can appeal to everyone. I for one have played MGS4 enough times to know that it certainly is a masterpiece and one of the best titles this gen. Even playing it a year and a half after release I do not feel that its dated, the story is superbly told and the gameplay is the best yet in an MGS title. It's a 10 back then and it's a 10 now. Perfect? Nope but the best stealth and story driven game to come out this gen so far.

8.0 - 7.0 gameplay plus a 1.0 bump for the cinematics. I gave up after act 3 due to boredom.

MGS4 was the only Metal Gear game since MSX(sans the iPhone) I did not finish. Even the crappy MG2 on the NES or Ghost Babel on the GBC were more fun. Watch, play a little, watch some more, play a while, watch Snake smoke was just too much.

It was my first Metal Gear Solid game. I really enjoyed it. But it doesn't deserve a 10.I'd say 9.5.It's my 3rd fav PS3 game. The other 2 being LBP and U2. Both always switch places

10. Perfectly brought this gen up to standards, makes everything else looks bad except GTAIV, which is just as good. They are both the standard in which to judge this whole gen.

IMO.

lol @ the people not being able to understand the story, it's not hard, plus the MGS Database is free, so read that too. You just got to play every game to know everything.

I would definitely give it a 10, it's up there with Diablo II: LoD.
The ending was bloody amazing. 8)

9.0 /10.0 I liked the gameplay but you could beat it in like three hours by skipping cutscenes. And the story was such a piece of crap that it was a joke. Couldn't believe the story was from a MGS game.

9/10. Great story if you kept up with it so far, with the exception of a few cheesy lines and the Meryl/Akiba romance (WTF was she thinking?!). The AI has some oddities at times as well during the Act 3. Besides that, everything else is excellent, and MGO is really awesome too.

3 hours? Not unless you've memorized every section of the game and are playing on the easiest difficulty. It took me 16 hours my second playthrough on the next to last hardest difficulty, and I skipped most of the cutscenes except the ending ones, so that pans out to... 14 hours?

MGS4, great story, great visuals, great presentation ... but the actual gameplay is just blah in my opinion.

Stealth system is not as good as Thief, Hitman or Splinter Cell, the shooting mechanics are not as good as Uncharted 1-2, Gears of War or a miriad of other 3rd person shooters.

I acknowledge that for others it may the best thing since sliced bread, but for me, strip the story away and just about every aspect of the actual gameplay has been done better elsewhere - Definitely Over-hyped and Over-rated.

In my Opinion the emperor has no clothes

I'd probably give MGS4 an 8. The mutiple installs and loading between set pieces hurts the seamless experience you must have if you're making a cinematic game. So couple that with no chapter select and personally I beat MGS4 one full time and made some saves for a couple of set pieces I wanted to replay like the Big Mama scene. Never plan on going back unless trophies come at some point. It's a shame though because I'm a sucker for presentation and with the sound games have these days it gives me the same feeling movies do when I play them in the basement from time to time.

I thought the game was a 9.0 or even a 9.5. I don't know if it should've scored a 10 though. It does have great graphics, sound, and gameplay, so I guess that's all that matters. I still haven't got the hang out of playing online though.

That. And what are these "standards" you speak of? Over 90% of the games from 2009 didn't even come close to MGS4 in terms of quality. Not sure what the hell he is talking about...

Great everything, but the plot falls apart. It also gets boring at some points with too much technical jargon and melodrama.

A masterpiece! The gane was just fun, and had an incredible story. Sure it pissed the xbox crowd off due to cutscenes but hey it's metal gear, a series known for excellent cutscenes with great story and gameplay. It was mad purly for Mgs fans which is why a lot of people new to the series didn't like it. It was pure win for me though. Back in the day games were praised for their amazing cinematic qualities and cutscenes now you have twitch gamers who don't like to watch or read anything. Mgs would not be the same without the cinematics.Midnightshade29
you are spot on... this is a masterpiece game that is why it got a 10 and GOTY.

8/10. Has some fundamental design flaws, some terrible pacing and storytelling in a game. But its goods outweighs the negatives. Oh and MGO was terrible. I say that as a bit of a fan of MGS; The Third and First are still the best imho.
