[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"] Exactly. Its old schoolTREAL_Since

I dig old school JRPGs. But alot of lemmings didn't like them before... that's strange.

LO is cool, but sometimes it's way too melodramatic, even for a JRPG. The dream sequences are not cool at all. Other than that and the framerate it'll give you your fix of an old school JRPG.

Those dream sequences are very well written, but i can see them turning off alot of gamers.

Personally I think LO is the most underrated game this gen. As a big Jrpg fan, this is the best this gen has to offer so far, and I like ES alot. As blasphemous as it may be to say, the ending of LO is almost as good as the ending of MGS4.

They are well written, just too melodramatic like alot of anime for me. I thought it was too long and over the top how they describe certain things. Take the first one for example about the little girl passing away. Describing her underdeveloped breast/chest was pretty funny.

personally i thought it was a nice touch, many books describe people and the environments in a very similar way as the dream sequences in LO

I agree, they were written to be like a chapter in a book so all the detail and everything needed to be there. Without that detail the stories wouldn't have been so memerable as they were.

My favorite ones were the shoemaker and Steps. I really liked Steps because of you got to see a softer side of Kaim and the ending was really sad/sweet. That one tugged at my heart the most.

[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"][QUOTE="Shafftehr"]Actually, I really enjoyed it. Surprised the heck out of me... Brought me back to the SNES/early PS days in its conventions. Definitely old school, and won't appeal to anyone if they aren't looking for some old PS style RPGs.TREAL_Since

I liked it a lot, but some parts were definitely cliched or downright cringeworthy. It's disappointing that Mistwalker haven't even attempted to breathe new life into the genre, but instead made a game so old school, so old fashioned, that you might as well be playing FFVII with upgraded graphics. I totally disagree with TREAL about the dream sequences, though. They were by far and away the coolest thing about LO. Without them, the game would lose its soul. They provided some much needed backstory, not to mention that they were the only truly moving things about the game (apart from the final fight of Disc 4)....

I'm not bashing the purpose of the them. Just the cutscenes and dream sequences are too melodramatic for my tastes. I agree that the story would not be the same without them.

Agreed. You can not judge a game by one scene and you didn't even play it thats just foolish.Jacboy71

Actually its even more foolish to assume someone judge anything based off of something they never judged it on. I judged the scene, not the game. I already made up my mind on the game way back when gameplay was shown. That and i don't like reading text that should be in a book. I don't want ot play an RPG that was mean't for the 90s. Thats how i judged it.

Its old and stale. Its not underrated.

Ced is just as right as you and anyone else who thinks it's underrated. He has a point. We all judge games from what we see of gameplay videos and read in reviews. The game is too old school for him, how can he be wrong about his own tastes?

I'm sorry, but you're trying to mount an argument based on 1 scene and some preview footage? You're definitely not qualified to judge it. You're certainly entitled to say that it doesn't look attractive to you, but it's not your place to argue about the game's merits (or lack thereof) against people who've actually played the game. You assume it's old and stale. You assume it's not underrated. But they are just assumptions. I'm not arguing whether your assumptions are right or wrong, just that you can't possibly know without playing the game....

I saw the scene where a character dies in the game and it was HORRIBLy directed. I only felt like laughing at it. And pretty much everything good you said about can be done in pretty much be done a tons of RPGs from Japan...

Underrated? Nah.

I actually really enjoyed this game. It was surprising for me because I had a falling out with JRPGs in the waning years of the PS2 era and I haven't really looked back since. I honestly was of the opinion that WRPGs had reached the point where I would never want to go back to a JRPG. After playing this game I'm ready to give JRPGs a chance. IMO it's definitely underrated.

I also thought the dreams were one of the coolest things in an RPG in a long while.

Why do ppl think Lems only owned Xbox last-gen? I mean jeesh there were over 100m PS2's sold last gen. I'm pretty sure many lems on here including myself owned a PS2. And I find LO to be a pretty good game.

I'm enjoying LO more than I have any JRPG in a LOONG time. It's a beautiful game with good music and so far the story is really good. Yes, it is basically every JRPG story ever, but the characters are fun and I like the combat.

And Kaim and his family are badass.

I'm loving LO as well, just easing my way through, got the official guide bundled with the game, spent a bit of MS points on the DLC as well, just slowly but surely easing through it, exploring every nook and cranny, this game is going to last me a very long time, all the exploring, cutscenes, training and dream hunting has taken me just past the 1st boss in 5hoursw, no deaths, just taking my time.

No I did NOT just say that. And no i haven't played it. I had the chance to, but wasn't interested in the slightest. I know the game isn't that good. And I was talking about a scene in the game and what you can do in basically most RPGs from Japan that LO doesn't do any different.

STFU if you haven't played it. LO is the exact type of game you need to play before dismissing..of couuse it looks like other JRPG's.... But it's not, more interesting storyline with grea tgraphics. I've played around 15 JRPG's in the last 8 years, and LO is my 2nd favourite.

... I was just wondering if this game brought anyone else back to the JRPG genre, the way it did to me..... I hadn't touched a JRPG since FFX.... until Lost Odyssey came along and decided to give it a try..... I forgot just how much fun it can be, to turn your group into an UNSTOPPABLE GROUP OF DEATH DEALERS... muahahahaa!

Lost Odyssey, has plenty of little extras to find and collect.

Anyway, I know you've heard it all b4, but Lost Odyssey really is under-rated... the frame-rate does drop occasionally... but really thats the only fault I can find with the game.....

PS. Jansen ROCKS!

Veterngamer

Blue Dragon almost took me out of liking jrpgs forever lol but lost odyssey brought me right back. That game is great i wish it would get more sells cause i want a part two like now.

Whats right and undeniable is that the main story in Lost Odyssey is badly written and directed. And I'm not even saying JRPG-clishee-badly-written-and-directed, in many parts it's even worse. Every single one of the dreams is a better piece of storytelling and writing of dialogue than the entire main story. Now as you might've guessed from my sig, that doesn't stop me from immensly enjoying it, but cedmln is right about the direction, and even though he hasn't played much of it, I can't say it get's better on later discs.

The story, though promising at first, is rather meh, but the whole packaging is an awesomeness that hasn't been seen since the PSX-FFs.

Lothenon

Exactly. The main villain has no depth whatsoever, which I hoped wasn't true going through the first 3 disks. But, it ended so badly, and me realizing the story was ultimately very cliche.

The game is fantastic. I like JRPGs, and this one will tug at your heart strings (if you have them).musicalmac

To be honest, I had a more emotional reaction to LO than I did MGS4..The whole situation when you first meet Cooke and Mack affected me more than the entirety of MGS 4..

YES! JANSEN KICKS ASS!

Anyways, I have to admit that it's one of the first few JRPGs I've played in my entire life (with Eternal Sonata being one of them and I guess my only other experience would be the Fire Emblem games since they're... SJRPG?). It's a really nice change of pace when it comes to what you can get on the 360. The loading and other tech issues were never severe enough to ruin the experience and the whole multiple discs thing didn't bother me too much (though I wish the US version had the better packaging that other regions may have gotten).

I'd say that out of all the games released in 2008 that I've played so far, this is easily my favorite... for now *looks at sig*
