Yes, Lost Odyssey is a series. MS press released confirmed it as a series that will continue to grow, so 360 owners will be expecting a numeral II attached to the title.

Despite the mixed reviews the first Lost Odyssey has gotten, the game is undeniably a success as far as a JRPG title goes. Believe it or not, by its second week of release Lost Odyssey outsold Little Big planet with a combined sales of 300k + titles. The game has also been a huge success in North America surprisingly, over half a million by the 10 week mark. Thats impressive considering that its a traditional turn based JRPG.

Lost Odyssey came out of the left field in filling up quality RPG titles for the 360. We can expect the second game to even better since it'll build from the good foundations of the first game and learn from all its shorcomings.

Are we seeing the start of a new acclaimed RPG series in the making? I think that despite all the criticisms, people can agree that Lost Odyssey was a solid game inheriting some of the finest cinematic moments in gaming. With Lost Odyssey 2 on the horizon with what looks like solid foundations to build upon, I think that MS has a solid chance at establishing the 360 as the RPG platform this gen.

The 360 already is the rpg platform

It has mass effect , lost odyssey , eternal sonata ,fallout 3 , oblivion , tales of vesperia ,blue dragon , fable 2 , last remnant , infinite undiscovery ,two worlds , enchanted arms ,ultimate allience , KF, phantasy star online , ff 11.

The wii has zelda , tales of symthonia ,ulitmate allience ,dragoin quest sworrds

The ps3 has , disgaea 3 , valkeryie chrionicals , fallout 3 , eternal sonata, oblivion, ultimate allience, enchanted arms.

while i do like the ps3's offerings, it doesnt compare to the 360's rpg line up.

scottiescott238

but it isnt the platform for RPGs, not in the way PS2 was last gen, at least not right now. The PS3 still have exclusive developers for its JRPG line, the Sony president said something along the lines of 7 exclusive titles for the PS3? Not that I trust sony press release, since they might be out anywhere from 2009- 2011, who knows...

So says the marketing guru who just so happens to moonlight gamespot's system wars forums.

Not marketed right?! Akihabara was plastered with posters and videos. Posters were everywhere for that game here. There's not much you can do when your console is under 600k (at the time.) It had more marketing than MGS4 did here, your claims are false and laughable.

Why must we compare everything with LBP? Compare LO to other [J]RPG's, not a game in a completely different genre made by a dev without a track record. 2D Platforming is possibly the smallest, most un-tapped market this gen next to shmups and shooters.

It sold 39,000 copies in its first week, and 9k is an improvement on the usual 3k they had then. And there was a 360 LO bundle, just only at 7 eleven... http://www.sej.co.jp/cmp/xbox/index.html

They marketed it, Japan just didn't buy it.  Thats all.

They sold 56k according to Famitsu first week, and for a big name RPG that was conceived to really give the 360 a big boost there, its a major let down Blue Dragon moved dozens of thousands of 360s just in the week it released and sold 10-20k 360s weekly for almost 2 months.

It is definitely a crime that BD moved more 360's than LO. Maybe thats what turned future buyers off?

no it wont, LO was a fair success in Japan, too much marketing results in brand recognition. LO2 will move way more because of MS's previous efforts.

Well the Japanese LOVED BD, so good for them i guess, but LO deserves much more love. I take it you live in Japan, how is the marketing for the 360 there right now, mainly TV? Do people still see it as a console for the hardcore gamers that do nothing else? Im hearing finding people that even own PS3s is hard. Its going to be interesting to see where 360 sales go as MS wont have big name titles to release for a while now. Real shame considering theyve loaded the console with just about everything Japanese gamers could want

I don't watch much tv. Mostly it was posters and big displays, and stacks of empty 360 boxes along with sold out signs. The Yodabashi Camera was plastered with LO posters. Don't really have many Japanese friends, so I wouldn't know what the consensus was on PS3 versus 360. The Exchange here regularly sells out of PS3's, have had stacks of 360's just sitting. Those probably count for US sales though.

Blue Dragon 2 is underway too, Mistwalkers giving that game more priority. I still dont see this game selling well anywhere else but Japan though. NA is way more into review sites and this game has a bad rep to follow.

Since you wanted to compare LO with LBP sales.

Lost Odyssey - 779,417(49 weeks)

LittleBigPlanet - 611,774(3 weeks)

LINK

Now back to what I was going to say. Compared to most JRPGs, LO sold really well and I wouldn't doubt that MS wouldn't have a sequel made for their best selling JRPG to date. Though this is a somewhat established franchise, MS will still need to do the big marketing that they did the first time around. Because with out those big Japan sells this game may have a hard time surpassing the 1mil mark.

I hope SE's new US branch makes awesome new 2D rpg's for the Live and PSN stores. Nothing crazy, I'd be happy with Disgaea 3 level sprite graphics (none of that blurring crap either.) Their best game this gen has been TWEWY, I want more stuff like that!! Not a political story and character fail like FFXII.

Great thread for a great game. Yes, I want Cry On to be finished and hoping the Gooch gets busy making the L.O. 2,3,4 etc. as the first game was AAA IMHO and only ranks behind Mass Effect as my favorite RPG this gen. :)

I wonder if they're going to make LO 2, 3, 4 as sequal/prequals to the current game. Otherwise we might get stand alone stories thats just set in the LO universe. Im really hoping for the former because I think the current LO character lineup is too golden to abandone. Guch needs to give kaim, seth, jaisen another go.

I enjoyed Lost Odyssey, but I hope they don't do a real deal sequel. If anything, I hope they pull a Final Fantasy and have a totally different cast and story but just throw on the LO name for brand recognition.

Us people just may prefer more power in our gaming then a even more miniaturized Wii for RPG's. I mean unless you can name a game having Lost Odyssey visuals, length, spoken word, level of detail and awesomness lol that exist on the DS or PSP. More to the point, if L.O or M.E. in it's exact same form, voice, visuals, etc. was somehow possible on DS  - devs, pubs & HW manufactures would be breaking down the door trying to find out how they did the impossible not to mention those games, L.O & M.E. doing precisely, pixel for pixel and visual to visual would score a 100/10 if available for a handheld. :P

Ya know that MS h8 will ruin your gaming enjoyment dontchaknow ?

And yet the DS and PSP have better RPGs than the 360 despite all that power you are touting. And I have no hate for MS. I have a 360 too. I do, however, hate all the fanboyism that goes on for the 360 on this board.

Ya know I just had to mess with you a little. Equating what's best is in the eye of the beholder I guess but please, please don't even try to compare a score given to a this gen console RPG as an equivalent score given to a DS or PSP game - Please don't. :)

what are you ppl tlkin about, every rpg on the 360 sucked a floppy one, lets stop throwing words like killer app and rpg king around until something remotely decent comes around. as opposed to some transparent attempt to wooo the the japanese.

comeonthehoops

Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia are the best JRPGs out this gen... You obviously haven't played either of them.

my greivance is with the term killer app. lost odyssey was a 7. or 7.5  and tales was 8.5 not the ground breaking games they are made out to be. u only need look at the ds and psp catalogue of rpgs for true "killer apps". so i dont need to play the games, that fact that i dont want to play them speaks for itself.

I mean unless you can name a game having Lost Odyssey visuals, length, spoken word, level of detail and awesomness lol that exist on the DS or PSP.

SecretPolice

Why on Earth are you touting Lost Odyssey's length?

Quite a few handheld games are much longer than LO. Being on a console doesn't mean it's longer.

Yeah ok they aren't killer apps, but they didn't "suck a floppy one." Both were great games, and in my opinion Lost Odyssey should have been at least an 8. Haven't played Tales yet though.

Why on earth are you even the slightest bit confident about what you just stated ? Probably take you longer to actually read all the dreams in L.O. then play a DS game. :P

Oh yeah, like many here you beat M.E. in 2 hours,Oblivion in a hour and a half, Fallout 3 in 15 minutes and Fable 2 in 5 minutes - A real RPG gamer i'm certain. - me, I spent about 120 hours on L.O. ;)

Me, I've spent 300 hours in Advance Wars, 130 in FFTA2 and 150 in Disgaea. 3 examples for you.

Okies, I guess that means L.O. would give you a full years worth of gaming my friend.

Unless......

... I don't get it. Are you trying to say I'm lying about me spending a lot of time in games that are renowned for their infinite replayability and extensive single player campaigns?

Are you trying to say that the crap on the 360 will last you longer than DS games? EO2 will last you longer than every 360 RPG combined, never mind the other RPGs on the DS

Anyone who has played LO seems to love it. Me included. Bring on the second!
