What is your opinion on Romance in Videogames?

I will not mince words, Developers this generation are terrible in anything that has to do with romance in videogaming. In fact it has always been pretty horrible.

The way I see it , Developers seem to think that romance= Casual sex, Saving princesses from oversized fantasy lizards, and the inability to express feelings for one another due to the misconception of making the game "cute."

The only exception to this is Team ICO. They have done a fantastic job in expressing the emotion of love in both of their games.

Not a lot of games do romance well, but visual novels do it correctly.

Violence and puzzle solving is fun, that are what most video games are based around. Dating sims are the romance games and they are a small niche.

You raise a very good point. I am personally not a hugh fan of romance, I do not mind if isn't overdone or just plain stupid. I do think that they do better in RPG's where they can tie the love into the story, but that's just my opinion.

It's hard enough to get human actors to convey love without it looking ridiculous. CGI, by comparison, stands no chance whatsoever.

I would think it would be easier, because with CGI the directors have full control on facial movements and what not.

Your post is subjective. I do not find unnecessary violence to be fun nor do I find Puzzle solving to be fun. To me it has to be balanced by story, gameplay, and genre. Not to say that i do not play violent video games but I prefer other game types.

In other words, what you saidwas your opinion.

Yeah, this doesn't work often. unfortunately, with a lot of JRPG's this is a central theme. Now if done well, it can really add to the story, but if not, then it just plain sucks.

The proposal for Meryl by Johnny was quite possibly one of the worst cutscenes in videogaming historyand Uncharted was terrible at expressing romance.

This is of course my opinion because romance is subjective from person to person but that does not excuse the romance in videogaming these days.

What genres is based around romance? How many games have game play based around romance? The only time I see romance in games is when the story is based around it, or more often wedged into the story for some unknown reason.

No genre is based upon romance other than dating simulators, which are terrible. My point is that when developers want to have romance in a videogame, they need to put effort into ensuring that it will enhance the experience and not degrade it.

I teared up on thsoe scenes because they were so genuine and sentimental. Are you trying to undermine the epic love story with those two couples? It can be compared to great romantic movies such as the notebook.

It's fine, "dating sims" (I rather call them eroges or Bishōjo games) are like books/manga that you make personal decisions in, it's not something like The Sims.. Even for being games that you (mostly) read through they can last up to 50+ hours.

I am being dead serious. The romance in thsoe two games were probably the most well crafted in all of gaming. and can be comapred to those in films.

It would be impossible for me to agree with you and I am certain that there are many people who would agree that the romance in those two games cannot even be compared to a Television show that airs on Nickelodean.

The only exception to this is Team ICO. They have done a fantastic job in expressing the emotion of love in both of their games.

Despite it being very idealistic.

I haven't come across a single game that has captured what "romantic love" actually is.

Romance in games serves an important purpose, it helps you grow attached to characters so you feel something when bad things happen. But there doesn't need to be a romantic connection.

It is rather difficult for a developer to capture true "romantic love" because it is subjective.

My description of love is loyality, commitment, and strong emotional ties. SinceI cannot define love, I can only describe it. Therefore for a developer to truly create something that would capture true love and romance, they would need to know what it was. Unfortunately tha would not be possible because as I mentioned, it is subjective.

What about FF7? The whole time you think there's a love triangle, but it turns out she's weirded out cause you stole her dead boyfriend's identity. And the other one is almost positive you're an imposter. And I'm fine with romance in games as long as no one else is around to watch me play through it. Thats just sort of embarrassing. My little brother watched me play through that Meryl and Akiba scene and it was just awkward.

Yeah, I liked the love story in FF8. In fact, in most Japanese RPGs we get some good old fashioned romance, though hampered by some bad, BAD, voice acting and localization, resulting in some unintended scenes that are hilarious instead of compelling.
