Who's the lucky bride? Itself! Yes, that's right, according to a report in yesterday's Gray Lady, Microsoft will be starting its own chip design division, with the ultra-creative name: "The Computer Architecture Group," and will be split between Redmond, Washington and Mountain View, California. The venerable NYT adds that Microsoft will use the lab to beef up chips in the next-generation Xbox (the Xbox 720?), and will be headed by Charles P. Thacker (pictured here working on the CAG gang sign). He's formerly of the legendary Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, where he helped work on the original Alto and the invention of Ethernet. All that aside, we're kinda concerned that IBM doesn't get too depressed over this development, and hope that Big Blue will at least get the kids, the car, and the house.

well it takes a while to develop consoles so it's not surprising that they would start early.

plus, if the article is true and MS is indeed developing its own chips, then it will take them even longer since they've never done it before. it only makes sense that they'd start earlier.

also, what makes you think they'll have a new console ready by 2008? they just started this new chip design lab. you honestly think they'll have an entire console ready to go by next year?

PS4 is already in development, so is Wii 2, and rumor has it that we'll see MGS18: Snake's 4th Revenge has been delayed due to Kojima's heart attack. alot of thing are now being designed, that doesn't mean that they'll be released anytime soon.club-sandwich

Not that soon, but best believe we will be playing a new Xbox before a PS4. Sony is off to a really slow start & it's obvious they wouldnt be able to recoupe if they poured money into a new system so soon. I think by releasing early, MS has started a trend for themselves & they can afford to do it! E M I N 3 M

this is very true about sony. theyve spent and lost so much money that theyre going to have to drag out the ps3 as long as possible before being able to afford building another console. so the ps4 may actually not come until 2 year after the next xbox, maybe even more. then this will start a nasty trend of new consoles coming out mid console life.

they made xbox in 1 year. i remember the rumors of it when they started because the rumors came from a now defunct mag called nextgen gaming.

They ditched the original XBOX quite quickly, were quick to contradict initial opinon about HDMI and 1080p with the elite....I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the XBOX 720 next year attempting to take out the PS3 technology wise. Imagine what the price would be? And we all thought the PS3 was expensive upon launch? Yesh....

I'll work on finding the link, but I KNOW n4g.com had an article that was posted here back when about how E3's new warranty announcement was going to push back their profitability potential no matter how well Halo 3 did upon release. Give me some time on that one.

All console processors are outdated uopn launch. You cant design a console around processors that will exist in 2011 and then release it in 2009. Why? Because the processor wont exist until 2011.
