Ok, this one proves no profit till next year:

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/05/04/robbie-bach-360-will-be-profitable-in-2008/

judging by the site name, good luck denying it.

-Renegade

Those are older. Here's something recent:

Microsoft is counting on the game to finally push its money-losing entertainment unit into profitability.

http://www.i4u.com/article11720.html

Also, this would back up what I'm saying seeing as 08 is like 2 months away...

Microsoft COO Kevin Turner admitted last week that it may take at least two to three more years before the Xbox 360 turns a profit.

Thank you. And until it HAPPENS, this system still isn't profitable.

That link is worthless to me. After reading Nathan_Drake's posts and doing my own "research", 2008 is the year MS's gaming division starts to profit.

xbox was made in one year you fail.

The Xbox processor was an off-the-shelf Pentium 3 733MHz. They didnt designa processor to use for it. Thats why it only took one year.

they made xbox in 1 year. i remember the rumors of it when they started because the rumors came from a now defunct mag called nextgen gaming.

-Renegade

how is it different? ms said they won't profit from 360 for another 2-3 years at the least.

-Renegade

don't you always post a "source" to everything you post? ok, give me a link.

obviously i can't link you to the magazine because it's dead but here is proof for the other one.

Microsoft COO Kevin Turner admitted last week that it may take at least two to three more years before the Xbox 360 turns a profit.

ok I'll give you that, but you still need the other one, or it didn't happened.

do you know all those forecast for profits in 2008 were made pre the 1 billion dollar loss announcement? check the dates on those forecast. the COO said they won't profit for another 2-3 years how are you going to disagree with him? :?

Last I heard, MS plans on profiting after the success of Halo 3 this year. Anything that came out before then is worthless to me. I'll wait and see instead of listening to your "outdated" links.

Yeah, dude, 2008 seems to be the year. I disproved the Halo 3 profitability RIGHT NOW, but we've got us some financial forecasting for next year. Don't argue pointlessly. Just give it till next year before you start saying anything else about profitability. This arguement for now is at a stand-still and should be left that way till further notice.

Well, I never said it would profit this year and neither did that link. Halo 3 will be profitable and has been selling hardware. They need 1st party titles to do great and sell hardware and Halo 3 looks to be that game. If you know anything about Halo success, then you would know that Halo and Halo 2 were successful over a long period of time. Halo 3 will be selling great for quite a while just like the previous games in the series, but Halo 3 seems to be selling at a much faster rate, which is great for their gaming division and should help to show the gaming division a profit in 2008.

I agree. Lets just wait and see.

360 will be profitable next year. The warranty loss was a write-off. It doesnt exist in P&L statements or future earnings forecasts. Halo 3 is going to make MS scads of money.

Indeed, indeed. You never said that but that was microsofts initial indication before E3 07 that it would be Halo 3's initial release that would turn them profit. I certainly recognize Halo 3's long-term profitability and XBOX's 2008 potential.

Hopefully, I can help shut that other whinny kid up. I may lean towards PS3 gaming wise, but as far as pointless fanboy argueing is concerned, I'm not a total fan of it.

Ya know designing consoles takes a lot of time right? Sony and MS just didn't decide that they were going to put out another console soon in 2004...usually if a company is serious about staying in the market they begin work on the "next generation" of a certain product near the completion of their newest product or shortly after its release

We'll see... GPU manufacturers make a *ton* of money every year by introducing a new product line. Microsoft is also interested (as is Sony) in going to Apple pricing - simply introducing a new, better model each year and keeping the price of the system high overall. Price wars cost them too much money in the end. They make money on licensing fees, so their goal is to keep a platform going as long as they can to make up for subsidizing the cost of the console for the first year or so.

Now here's where the catch comes in! Microsoft is interested in designing a lot of their next console in-house. Why? Well - look at Nintendo and Apple - they've made the *hardware* side of their operation profitable. Hmm... that's a lot less risky. The entire life of the Xbox, Microsoft lost money, and getting screwed by bad contracts with nVidia didn't help. Come over to the Xbox 360 - hardware problems cost them millions, and Halo 3 will be the thing that finally pushes decent profitability for them... that's sad. Two years to profit? Too long. They're still in the negative for the "Xbox project" as a whole, to the best of my knowledge.

I could really see Microsoft saying "we're done with that" and introducing a console sold for profit. Design it in-house, contract out the manufacturing, put them on store shelves in September 2009 or 2010... and you're good.

2012? Even if they're subsidizing, keep dreaming, a seven-year life on a modern console? That's a good one... I'd honestly love to see that happen, the screenshot comparissons between PCs and consoles in 2011 would be hilarious.

No need to look further than the PS2. Compare GoW2 to STALKER. Comparing consoles to PC's at any point in time is absolutely worthless.

2012? Even if they're subsidizing, keep dreaming, a seven-year life on a modern console? That's a good one... I'd honestly love to see that happen, the screenshot comparissons between PCs and consoles in 2011 would be hilarious.

You make a really good point. I think overall, this reflect microsofts determination to stay the course! As much as people hate MS being in the console market they arn't going to go away and they're not going to have the next dreamcast like sega, as many have predicted over the last 2 years on these boards.

My concern is that they try and develop lower end / cost effective hardware that will turn a profit from day 1. I'm worried that they will see the success of the wii and try to use nintendo's business model..i.e. cater for the casual market. Maybe I'm wrong but I wouldnt like to see the console market go this way.

What I would like to see is microsoft bring something new to the table that could be used in PCs to rival intel and amd. More competition in that area would only be a good thing and having more competition could possibly drive more innovative thinking in cpu develpment...maybe?

it will come sooner than you think, M$ cant wait to lech off it customers more and more :S

Ah, Wintel. The mere convergence of the words "Windows" and "Intel" harkens back to a simpler time (call it the 1980s and 1990s), when Microsoft and Intel were literally joined at the hip. Microsoft provided the software, and Intel brought the brains. Today in the aught decade, everything's all whacked -- Apple has partnered with Intel, dumping IBM. Meanwhile, Microsoft is in the video game business, and now powers its Xbox with IBM chips. Well, get ready for yet another change in the who's-in-bed-with-whom story: Microsoft is leaving IBM. Who's the lucky bride? Itself! Yes, that's right, according to a report in yesterday's Gray Lady, Microsoft will be starting its own chip design division, with the ultra-creative name: "The Computer Architecture Group," and will be split between Redmond, Washington and Mountain View, California. The venerable NYT adds that Microsoft will use the lab to beef up chips in the next-generation Xbox (the Xbox 720?), and will be headed by Charles P. Thacker (pictured here working on the CAG gang sign). He's formerly of the legendary Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, where he helped work on the original Alto and the invention of Ethernet. All that aside, we're kinda concerned that IBM doesn't get too depressed over this development, and hope that Big Blue will at least get the kids, the car, and the house.

Yeeeeeeah.. go back to the kitchen.. fix a nice tall glass of stfu.. and for christs sake put whatever fanboy shirt you had back on.

lol the cell....yeah thats going pretty well (Sarcasm) anyways 2008 is not the year for the next xbox and if you truly think Microsoft is that stupid then you seriously need to look at there position in the market right now is. Xbox 360 is getting its but kiked by the wii but just barly surpassing the ps3 in sales. Why the hell would Microsoft release another console that's probably going to cost 800$ and out due the geforce 9000 series.

There's simply no point! Microsoft has been working on the xbox (720?) the day the xbox 360 was launched. Expect the next xbox to be announced at E3 2008 or E3 2009 and launched in 2010 or late 2009.

How do i know this? Look at what microsoft has done before! Look at how stupid this subject is! Microsoft is not going to stop supporting a console that's still young. Give xbox360 a year or two and then maybe you will hear news on a new xbox.

And Sony is designing the PS4, and the PSP 2. Nintendo has a staff for Wii2 and DS2 development. Honda is working on cars that will come out in 2010. McDonald's test ktchen is working on a new burger they will release next summer. Calvin Kleim already has their Winter '09 line set.

So......your point was???

Realistically speaking if there is a new XBOX it'll be here at the Earliest FALL, 2009, at the latest Fall, 2010

Developing a new processor for consoles usually takes at least 24 months (the 360 processor was something around 24 IIRC).

So yea...Fall of 2010 is when I predict the new xbox, Fall 2012 is when I think the new PS will come out (if there is one)....and Nintendo's new Console...I'd say 2010...maybe 2011 if the Wii fad doesn't die out

CPU wars between AMD and Intel go back and forth. Keep in mind, Sony / IBM with "the cell" could be new players... well, if software programmers weren't so lazy, and Sony understood how to capitalize on it. Microsoft (as far as Windows is concerned) is firmly in Intel's pocket, neither of them is keen to start pissing each other off - they've got a good thing going - bad for new entries in the market who are opposed to the existing architecture.

Intel... is actually getting into the GPU market themselves. They were the stiff-collared business for quite some time, now, judging from BF 2142 in-game ads and their recent ad-material, they've "let themselves go" with the Core 2 Duo and admit those lucrative sales weren't exactly all to "business users". Entertainment hardware is a profitable business.

So... I don't know, if Microsoft intends to enter the hardware market "for reals" with the PC, or is simply trying to get the Xbox 720 design done in-house so that they can follow in Nintendo's footsteps. I'm going with the latter. Microsoft looks at themselves and Sony, blowing money on hardware, and then they look at Nintendo, making money per unit... that can't sit well with them when they start writing their future business plans.

Wouldn't be so sure about that. They ditched the original XBOX quite quickly, were quick to contradict initial opinon about HDMI and 1080p with the elite....I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the XBOX 720 next year attempting to take out the PS3 technology wise. Imagine what the price would be? And we all thought the PS3 was expensive upon launch? Yesh....

Xbox 1 had the normal console lifespan of 5 years. And you have to be STUPID to think 360 would be abandoned after just two years being the cash cow that it is. Sony sheeple are THE most dilusional of all fanboys - have been since the PS2. Its sickening...
