Another year, another dissapointing installment of the Madden franchise. With no competition and a monopoly the creators of the Madden franchise evidently don't really care anymore. At least Sega and 2K would make a QUALITY football game. I'm so sick of this mediocre sports game that everyone buys each year. Lets compare review scores...

NFL 2K 9.9 (DC)

NFL 2K1 9.9 (DC)

NFL 2K2 9.5 (DC)

NFL 2K3 9.6 (PS2)

ESPN NFL FOOTBALL 9.3 (PS2)

ESPN NFL 2K5 9.2 (Xbox) Sadly, it stopped here.

Madden hasn't come anywhere close to these scores in A LONG time.

whos says if 2K made a football game it would be as good as they used to be...standards are different now.....2K can't make a decent baseball game for hells sake....but with that said we need some competition cuz madden isn't even trying anymore

So far, since I started my Madden boycott in 2005 they haven't made me regret my decision one bit and instead have reinforced my belief that they were going to let the franchise go into the crapper. They need to scrap the entire team and rebuild.

That's the problem. NOBODY can get into the NFL game because EA snatched up the license exclusively.

But doesn't 2k Sports have the MLB License, and Sony still makes The Show... There are probably differences in the contracts but itd be nice if they could :?

The Baseball contract isn't exclusive. EA has the exclusive rights to the NFL player license. Only they can have the likenesses of actual NFL players, teams and stats in their game.

But the sub-par 2K baseball games may be suffering the same side-effect that Madden is with football: no competition. Before you bring up MLB09 (which is awesome), I'd just say that one competitor on a last place console (and only there) is not the same as an across the board multiplat competitor when it comes to incentive.

Madden did not have a hype machine behind it this time and that seems what it takes to get a good score this gen.

So they can't make a great football game because they can't make a good baseball game? Huh? Well then, I think they can make an excellent football game because their basketball games are great. Beat that logic. :|

That's just ludicrous. They obviously have the credentials (their original NFL games were top tier) and if you give them the NFL license they'll do wonders with it. I honestly don't see why you feel they don't even have the POTENTIAL to make a qaulity football game.

Speaking of which, I really wish that EA can make baseball games again, even though the first two games are going to suck (they lost everyone from the MVP 2005 team).

Here is the real point, no one can touch the NFL license until EA's contract expires. You're TIRED OF 2K5 LOVE? We're tired of one company molopolizing the NFL franchise. Competition is good last time I checked. And from the looks of some reviews, Madden needs a swift kick in the ass and seems to need compeition.

And why can't we assume that? I say it's very reasonable considering that 2K whopped EA when it came to football games and the recent Madden games have been disgraces to the NFL license. If anything, it's pointless to assume that they CAN'T make a high quality football game. In the end, a football fan should want the best possible quality in a football Sim and 2K is capapable of delivering. EA had their chance and I personally can't wait until their exclusive deal with the NFL expires.

For me, it didn't flop. It got a great score (8.9) on a real review site that uploads more than once per day. I mean really, they got Giancarlo Varanini to review this game, who's that? Shows the sad state GS is in when they just get some joe shmoe to review one of the biggest games of the year.

EDIT: I found out long ago that most people have never played 2K5, they just love feeling important by hatin on EA. 2K5 was a fantastic game, but it's no where near the standard people hold it up to. The DB logic in that game was pretty messed up, but other than that it was very good. Yes I would like to see sK get back into it, but you guys whine way to much for barely even playing madden or the old 2K games at all.

2K has always made crap for football games

They're designed for the people who play games and don't follow sports, they're NOTHING at all like the actual game

Running was horrible, blocking was horrible, passing was horrible, it was nothing at all like the real sport

That's why when EA and 2K both had the chance to get the NFL to give them the license 2K lost, the NFL did not want 2K making an inferior product to showcase their sport.

Know what would have happened if 2K got the license?

All Pro Football 2K8, just another example of how far away from the sport of football 2K is.

i believe it was the nfl who offered the exclusivity deal as opposed to ea asking for it. it runs out in 2013 i think, but i doubt the nfl will go anywhere else so you're probably stuck with madden a long time. the last madden game i got was on the gamecube. there's that new football game coming out that uses the gta engine, i can't remember it's name but it looks pretty awesome, and i'm sure modders will be able to put in nfl teams and kit's (on the pc atleast).

It's called bone breaker, ankle breaker, or back breaker, one of those 3. The movements in that game look awesome, very smooth and lifelike.

Can someone please explain to me what they are looking for Madden to change? Honestly! Its a damn football game, how much more were you honestly expecting? It isn't like this is some kind of action pack shoot em up game where you expect these huge additions. Its an NFL football game.

It was written by Giancarlo Varanini, of course it's going to be a spotty review (Get it? teehee). From my knowledge nobody on GS staff actually likes football, so they hired some bum (Giancarlo Varanini) writing for a local newspaper to write the review

No it doesn't, if you are just basing Madden 10's quality off of one score (i.e. this website), then you are truly being silly. It has been getting pretty good praise everywhere else, and I haven't taken Gamespot's reviews seriously, for the past few years. I wish people would stop getting butthurt and get off their NFL 2K5 high-horse.

For sports games buy from the according publishers for a quality game:

American Football: 2K Sports

Hockey: EA Sports

Baseball: SCEA

I played NFL 2K5 on my PS2 more than Madden 09 last year. There is something fundamentally wrong with that.

all this 2K5 love isgettin old is what i'm saying get off the baseball thing and focus on my real point

Jaysonguy

And what's your point? That 2K CAN'T make a good football game?

That's just ludicrous. They obviously have the credentials (their original NFL games were top tier) and if you give them the NFL license they'll do wonders with it. I honestly don't see why you feel they don't even have the POTENTIAL to make a qaulity football game.

I haven't bought Madden since I got NFL 2K on my Dreamcast. Its forever 2005 in my livingroom football world. Curtis Martin and Wayne Chrebet FTW!

Madden used to be AAA as well.. The series has tanked. SCEA San Diego should get back in the NFL gameCouth_
It would be awesome to see an exclusive NFL game for PS3. That team is great. Unfortunately that's not possible until the contract expires. At least 2K's contract with the MLB allows 1st parties to make baseball games! I miss NFL 2K . I'm not a Madden fan at all.

1- The Madden games now blow out every football game in the past.....the genre has just gotten stale and hasn't had enough improvements. Its not like 2ks games are better, in fact 2k5 is horse crap compared to Madden now, the presentation is better 2- This games issues seemed to focus on -Inconsistant AI in terms of blocking schemes, the unstoppable QB sneak, presentation issues both visual and audio positives -Most realistic passing game in a Madden game -Online Franchises/Coop mode work extremely well, just need to be fleshed out -The Defensive AI is extremely good.....in somewhat of a bad way as well though.

Making stuff up FTL. The NFL didn't want 2k to have the license because they were charging a lot less for the game than EA, they wanted to keep the "value" of the brand up.(read: charge more)

Madden does not 'blow out every football in the past'. It took EA 5 years to step in the direction of an actual football simulation rather than an football arcade-like game. The past madden's has a unrealistically fast game speed that didn't seem natural and older madden's had bulky player models (this is fixed now, they look great).

2k5's presentation is just as good and the gameplay is STILL better. 2k5 mainly just lacks in it's visuals and player animations in comparison to Madden 10 (which is understandable). It's sad though that Madden 10 still has problems with 'tron jogging'. 2k5's VIP system was brilliant for recording your gameplay tendencies and recording all your statistics. You could technically play yourself in a match if you wanted using this system OR other people's VIP profiles online once you get plenty of games under you.

In response to your posititves:

- Madden's passing game is the more realistic that it's ever been in it's series, but I wish EA would just go ahead and copy NFL 2k5s drop step system, which they've incorporated into the passing gameplay. It's much more realistic and proper and once you master this simple aspect of the game, then you can get into nice passing rhythms because you're linking the timing of the drop steps to when you SHOULD pass to a WR who is running their route.

- The defensive AI is good and it's a bad way. One thing I can't stand about all Madden's is that LBs and CBs sometimes have the superhuman ability to compeltely accelerate, jump in the air, and intercept passes after the WR they defend has clearly beaten them. On all these reviews, they STILL say that INTs occur far to often and the unrealistic defensive AI is the problem. It's stupid when you see people play Madden and they score half their points from INTs returned for touchdowns.

disagree on that gameplay still being good...First all pro 2k8 is almost exactly the same in terms of gameplay, that game....not very good 2nd- the running sty-les in Madden are atleast different, in 2k5 they pretty much same across the board 3rd -the secondary AI was horrible, and the O-line is almost as bad as the one in Madden 4th- 2k5 was even more arcady...it was no where near Realistic 5th- The current madden games are more refined, better done in terms of gameplay. Some of the same flaws are still their, but the overall improvements overtime just makes them better. Not 60 dollars a year better, but better 6th- Madden needs to fix - Presentation -O-line AI -fix up the running game some more -expand on its online offerings. - QB sneaks, 1 yard goalline runs, they need to be harder - QB scrambles need more penalties, the franchise is natorious for making Micheal Vick or Vince Young Madden GODS I do like the VIP system, that said I can not honestly sit here and say NFL 2k5 still has good Football gameplay, if anything its bad by what Madden has done on its own...Yes it isn't alot, but its more refined and far less arcady. In my opinion it also takes way more skill as well.

They were good in the 90's :P Also what SCEA is good at is motion capturing, physics, and player movements to capture realism and a more natural feeling. That's what madden lacks.

I'm not clinging to 2k crying "bring teh 2k5 back:cry:".. I'm saying right now, I bet SCEA San Diego could make a fine NFL game

animations wise Madden has actually stepped up its game, I would say that isn't as much of an issue, but I could see a Sony studio doing it much better.
