How about how before MS released avatars people were knocking Sony for copying MS but as soon as MS does it to Nintendo it's somehow acceptable?

This fictional statement is wrong on so many levels. We play many games online such as motorstorm, resistance, call of duty 4, warhawk, gtaiv as well as many other games. I just don't see the point of paying for a service that should be free.

There entirely free MMORPGs available for PC. You don't even pay for the game. And why should it be common sense? Some PC shooters allowed up to 128 players in a game and required no additional fee.

I'm not saying that the news about a monthly fee won't come (though I think it's very unlikely), but as of yet, none of that has been announced, so don't cling onto that just yet.
