Majora's Mask > Ocarina of Time

While OOT had a bigger impact, MM is a much better game.

Better story and characters. Better dungeons (quality over quantity), much better overworld, original mindblowing game mechanic (three day cycle), better soundtrack, etc.

Really, I think that MM is the only Zelda game that was really well written. Every character and location, even items such as masks have their own story. The overworld was far more important and while there are less dungeons, the dungeons had much better design. Stone Tower Temple is a huge example.

Much better? No, dont think so but I did enjoy it more over OoT.

What really won me over was the overal dark tone of the game. Very well done.

I agree. OoT was revolutionary for the time, but is way too over-rated today.

Majora's Mask on the other hand...is magical experience.

Up there with Okami, Beyond Good and Evil, Ico, and Psychonauts on my "all-time best action-adventure game" list.

Not really sure what all Zelda games I have played, but I hated the one that had a crap load of water traveling in it to get to each area. You were on a little ship with a cannon on it. That Zelda sucked. Which one was that one? You had a flute it this one as well.

Yeah that's it. Couldn't stand that game. Are the two we are talking about in this thread better than that one?

a complete exaggeration. while majora's mask is definitely the most atmospheric and emotional zelda game, it's not much better than ocarina of time. both are absolute masterpieces.

the same could be said for wind waker and twilight princess - some like one zelda game over the other, some praise one game while calling the other a joke in comparison, but that's just their personal preference because the fact of the matter is they're all absolute masterpieces quality wise.

I dunno. The more I replay over the years, the less I seem to like it. Contrast to OOT, and I still enjoy as though it was still new, but that's just me. I think a 3DS remake of Majora's Mask would be great though.

MM was the first Zelda I ever bought, and I still say OoT is better. OoT had a more engaging story, more dungeons, and had a much better villain. I love MM, but it's just too short, and I never cared for skull kid. He was more like an annoying pest than someone I could take seriously.

I prefer the epicness of OoT. and on another note dungeons and soundtrack in OoT > Dungeons and Soundtrack in MMO.

3 day cycle is meh too, but MM is still a great game.

edit - OoT also has much better bossfights.

theyre both among my favorite games, but i dont really consider plotting to be the strong point of any zelda game. OoT is an example of unspoken richness in a gameworld. the leap between the younger and older link's hyrules is more than an aesthetic one. it reflects a loss of wander and an acceptance of responsibility. its just excellent game design.

I just checked what games I have for my Gamecube and I have:

Wind Waker

The Legend Of Zelda Collector's Edition (Promotional Disc)

This disk has 4 games on it. They are:

The Legend of Zelda

Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link

Oh.....and both of the ones we are talking about in this thread. Looks like I am going to have to go and play them both.

Majora's Mask had a very well realised game world. The writing and atmosphere was and still is top notch. OOT might have had more of an impact though. They're both great and provide different experiences. I'm not sure I like the idea of picking one over the other.

On another note Im glad to see that Oracle of Seasons beat out Oracle of Ages. Im mad to see aLttP get beat by MM and Im also mad that OoT had to go against Windwaker since it is my rotating 2nd or 3rd fav Zelda game.

They're about even for me in overall enjoyment. MM is the deeper, more ambitious game, but OoT was expertly designed as well. I find MM more replayable though.

This image really conveys the unique design and haunting yet organic atmosphere of the game.

Out of all the Zelda games I think Majora's Mask is the only one that really stands out.

It's kind of like the "Black Sheep" of the Zelda family...but in a good way.

I love how MM blurs the line between dreams and reality...between fairy tales and high fantasy.

Like Silent Hill, the game is chock full of psychology. I found incredible meaning and depth in the story.

As mentioned before the Majora's Mask world is exceptionally well-realized...

There's a certain magic to it that you just don't find in most video games.

its only similar in that you have two comparable maps that differ in theme. the themes are entirely different and the light/dark thing has been done so many times that its old hat. and if we are going to go by influence (which is silly), theres no going against OoT.

It's not that clear-cut. OOT's temples were better in both presentational design and puzzle quality than MM's dungeons (Stone Tower Temple is the only truly great dungeon from MM as far as I'm concerned) and the music on the whole was way more memorable.

What really puts MM above OOT in my mind is the world and characters.

I think Majoras Mask was the best follow up to Ocarina of Time, they both flow very well tell a great tale in a vast world. I would be hard pressed to pick one over the other but I think I would lean towards Majoras Mask for the more mature undertones they had in the game.

Majora has more kinks than Ocarina and doesn't have the same sense of scale (and it's dungeons are probably not quite as excellent as Ocarinas), but it has a much more original story, has a more sophisticated/daring design outside of dngeons, more atmosphere, and has more of a feeling of tension and much better sidequests and character interactions. I'd say that they are about on the same level but I prefer Majora.

I actually only tried it once, the timer reset when I was close to the end. I figured this would happen multiple times in the future, and never touched the game again. Games on a timer are really frustrating to me. I did love Ocarina of Time though.

Though all three are some of my favorite games of all time, so I'm just sort of nitpicking.

Both were great, but I think Ocarina of Time is a bit better even though it's overrated. I'm sure the reason OOT is overrated is because nostalgia gets the best of most people. But OOT had a better level (dungeon) design and a more well designed overworld to explore. I didn't like how Majora's mask had that symmetric design where the world was cut into fourths.
