Its not that big of a deal tbh, if you are running low on space you can fork over 70 bucks or less depending on where you go and upgrade your HDD to well over 120gb.
You don't need to keep every game installed on the PS3 at once. This thread is fail. Seriously, I remember when memory cards only had 16 blocks of space (1MB total) and somehow I managed.

Switching memory cards is as easy as pulling the card out and putting another in. I don't believe you can do that with a Hardrive simply by just yanking it out the front of your console and putting another in
I love how only about 6 of those games are worth owning :-\munu9I think it's more about the trend. I see no reason to assume GTA4, MGS4, FF13, KZ2 and other *must buys* will not have large HDD installs...right?
Yea, they probably will. Will be interesting to see how the poor 40 giggers cope.
Well, PS3 isn't perfect. Now that the "PS3 isn't selling" debate is over, I guess mandatory installs will take its place. Can't wait until they come around with the "PS3 gets too dirty" complaint.
My probalem with it is that i expect my pc to install games before i play them and with no cd cracks i dont have to need the disk again to i uninstall it but with consoles the point of them to me was that it was plug and play so to speak you put the disk in and it loads up straight away having to install some games wouldn't be very console like i no you can get bigger hadd drives and leave it on there but its still an inonveniance and id rather cnsoles stick to being consoles rather than start a trend of mandatory installations they should be optional if there at all.
Yes i understand the other consoles have there inconveniances the RROD pretty big inconveniance and if it wasnt for the free repair itd be a turnoff paying for live is an inconveniance too but a small one and friend codes on the wii are an inconveniance just which each were improved by there respective companies instead of ignored by pigheaded fanboys who defend obvious flaws in there machines design.
I just hope the 360 doesnt try something similar because i may just jump ship if they do two flops on ps2 are getting sequels on ps3 and i want them (getaway and killzone, i liked them shocking i know)

I can understand this on a PC, but this is a pain in the ass on a console. Console HDDs are expensive and are supposed to be for casuals.
What casual wants to uninstall/reinstall games every time he/she wants to play it?
For the PC HDDs are in huge sizes and cheap so it doesn't effect them as much.
Its an issue. Sony fanboys can play it off all they want, its a fundamental issue that really goes against one of the reasons Consoles are popular in the first place. Is it a game breaking thing, the kind of thing that spells Doom for the PS3? no, ofcourse not, but it also shouldnt exist.
Blame Blu-Ray. Its slower read times and MUCH slower seek times are the cause.

PS3 supports hot swapping HDD while the PS3 is on? Cool if it does, didnt know that.

From what I've seen, heard from friends, and this from Youtube. Its not as easy as a memory card pull and switch
Lol, There was a chance killing the Ps3 last year, the system is still alive, Blu ray won and Nothing can Kill it Now Plus the line up compensates anything.

Who gives a crap man? You can delete those files off of your PS3 after your done with it without losing your gave saved file if you want to. I have 14 PS3 games, and 39 gigs of space on my HDD. (I have a 60 GB) That includes all 13 games, 4 demos, and a few game trailers.
Besides, you can upgrade your HDD on the PS3 for half the price of the standard 120 GB HDD for the 360... not to mention the freaking 20 GB (only 20 freaking GBs, good grief) cost 100 smackers. I'll take the mandatory installs anyday.
Installs don't bother me. I see it like this. I am only going to have the games I am actually playing installed. Once I beat it, I have no need to keep it on my HDD.oblivion...4.6gb required

People need to stop whining and just go out and buy a bigger HDD. What did you think the console was gonna be future proof or something?Blackbond
Isn't that the point of buying a console? You should not have to spend another $100.00+ dollars for a new HDD because you ran out of space. You spend x amount of dollars on the console and it should last you 5+ years without having to (upgrade it) if we wanted to do that we would all be PC gamers.
Humm....
I see a new sheep argument forming out of the murky darkness of illogical thought process.
"Memory cards are better then hard drives, because you can swap them out really easy, and they are cheap."

Who said memory cards are better then HDDS? :|

If you run out of space, you can always delete something. Install files aren't meant to be kept on your hard drive for prolonged periods of time anyway.I cant sit and play one game till I beat it though. I usually have at least 5 or so games going at one time. So for me its a problem, but then again, I really dont have anything to complain about because all I use that big black brick for is watching movies anyways. At least till FFXIII comes out.
This isn't a big a problem as people make it out to be, but it can be an issue in the future. What's to say that this won't be problem in the future? A lot of games are coming out, and after while, these games will add up in space. Do you think the average Playstation 3 owner,( you know, the kind that is going going to buy it for Grand Theft auto, Madden 09, or some other big profile game) will want to bother with getting a new Hard disk drive?. Sure, you can get a new Hard drive, but that's an additional cost. Aside from that, what about all the Downloaded content you have? You'd have to transfer it. The average PS 3 owner won't want to bother because lets face it, the appeal of console gaming is the relative ease in setting up your console when compared to a PC (not that PC gaming is hard). This convergeance of pc gaming and console gaming can have bad implications for the future because what's next? We need to buy more memory? I mean, if this contiunes, what will distinguish console from PC's?
PC owners do have to deal with this kind of thing but PC hard drives on average would have more space than a console one. The Pc that I am using was built in 2005 with a 200 GB hard drive. At the time, many games would use only a couple GB's of space. Now, you can get larger Hard drives than 200 GB, yet games these days take more space. However, this kind of thing is expected on PC's. On top of that, upgrading your PC has benefits outside of gaming.
It has nothing to do laziness. But console gaming's appeal is that it is supposed to be a simpler affair than PC gaming. This is even magifnied when you consider the large space of Blue Ray discs. What was is truly the advantage? I am not trying to rip on the Playstation3 ( I love mine and so far have had to install only 2 games), but that large space of Blue Ray discs could benefit us users by leaving the content on the disc.
Many of us don't consider this a problem because we are comfortable with technology. You are right, if we run out space, we could delete the data or upgrade to the larger HDD. For me, I could do get a larger HDD but that's money I don't have right now and a cost that Sony never addressed. But my cousin buying one to play Madden is not going to bother. The average owner just might not be comfortable with technologoy like we are. You could argue that the average PS3 owner won't even buy that many games. Regardless, my point is that this CAN be issue due to the hidden cost of time and money. Maybe not for someone who uses PC's, but for the dude who just bought it for a couple of big budget games, it can be.
Wow alot of these people need to go read some simple PC architecture books.
If you cant swap out a HD from a PS3 you are a moron, much less involved then on a PC.
Another guy asked sarcastically if memory cards are faster then HDs? Well lets think... No spindles, no discs, no heads coming in contact with anything, no moving parts to create heat...
Gee, I wonder why solid state hard drives are making a big entry into corporate data centers. 500gb for $30k, and they are selling like hot cakes...
How much space is on a 40gb? I know even an empty HDD never has what the package says, and with the OS, i imgaine its even less.
Alot of people are the type who beat a game in a 2 weeks and sell it back (gamestop loves raping these people, but oddly they love being raped). For them, thaeres no issue. But to a person who keeps games and plays them even after they've beaten them (which shouldn't be that rare I'd hope), this is a problem. If I get bored one day and decide to go back and challenge myself to see if I can beat DMC4 on the hardest difficulty, the joy of that will be crushed when I realize I deleted it and now I have to wait 15 minutes for it to install again. I probably won't even bother and i'll do something else or play some other game.
