BioShock had the best Story, atmosphere and voice acting I've ever seen for a video game.. It was film quality.. If that isn't pushing the industry foward then no game can..

I'm sorry.. but Mario Galaxy while fun and great.. isn't innovative in any way.. doesn't do anything "new".. has the same old story.. doesn't even have voice acting..

The game will be great but nothing "industry saving" like you seem to think

FantasySports00

Again, you're assuming that the only place teh game industry can go is towards movie like quality.

Story, atmosphere, and VA are all things that have been done VERY well before bioshock, it's not like this is the first time we've seen it, or even the first time we've seen it done amazingly well.

Prove that Mario Galaxy isn't innovative. And please, don't forget to discuss gameplay, you know what most games are supposed to be about :P

How about you prove Mario Galaxy is innovative first and then I'll try and prove Galaxy isn't innovative..

Oh wait.. we both can't because we haven't even played the game..

so we'll just have to wait and see

Ah hah! Got you with sean connery! (remember that ytmnd?.. alex trebek? no?)

I never once claimed that mario galaxy WOULD be incredibly innovative and would push the industry forward(at least, i didn't meant to if i accidently did :D).. you, on the other hand have out right dismissed mario galaxy.

So, you've admitted that you have no idea if mario galaxy will or will not push the industry forward, and you have no idea if it will or will not be innovative.

EDIT: I forgot to add the most important bit; "I think we're done here".

We're all just speculating.. that's what this entire thread is about.. if Mario Galaxy pushes the industry forward or not!:|

I don't care what anybody else is doing, my motives are different. I entered a post in this thread soley to debate your statement that mario galaxy will not push the industry and is not innovative; while bioshock and other games were taking the only/correct route(or as it seemed you implied)

If you felt that this was your opinion, and believed you didn't have any evidence you should have made sure to site that. Or, remained neutral to mario galaxy.

Anyways, dont most revolutionary and innovative things come without warning?

Well from the videos I have seen.. It's the same old mario.. it's not even using the Motion Controls in some crazy way never seen before or something.. I don't understand how it can push the industry forward other than being an amazing game.. Just like Halo3 was.. it didn't do anything new or innvative but it is a great game.

Now maybe a FPS that masters the Motion Controls(especially online).. now that would push the industry forward..

Having actually played a bit of SMG, I can safely say that it's NOT "the same old Mario." It definitely feels like Mario, but it's a completely different game from what we've seen before. The first time you jump into a star then take off shooting across the Yoshi galaxy, star bits swarming around you, then you'll know.

It's not innovative, but it's definitely CREATIVE.

That's a big word. I'd rather say the Wii is, Mario Galaxy is just one tool.
Sadly, i'm a bit lonely in that opinion.

In an industry where 9/10 games are shooters and have "serious" storylines. If it's not sports or driving it's shooters. Every game tries to be "realistic" and people have forgotten fantasy is part of a good story. I could count a very small number of rpgs or platformers this generation. I could count on one hand how many of those are worth the price.

Galaxy is a refreshing twist and looks to have that mario magic that we have not seen in a long time. Fanboys can hate but they know deep down that mario is the man.

MrEpyx

Refreshing twist? Its another Mario platformer.. Gee how original..

Don't act ignorant. It's not just "another Mario platformer". Fanboys are getting worse every day.

I don't think the industry can really be pushed much further. Most gaming concepts now adays have been done before. Truly amazing games (Bioshock) are basic clones of previous games (SS2). Mass Effect will be pushing a game's dynamic size... but that is just the next step in gaming.

Revolutionary games, or games that completely change the way we think and how developers make games wont happen (I think) for a few generations once we hit Virtual Reality at some point.

But... Mario Galaxy is among the pack that is pushing the industry into a level of superb game design -

  1. Mario Galaxy
  2. Portal
  3. Spore
  4. Mass Effect
  5. Bioshock
  6. several more

variety is best IMO .. but we tend to see too many shooters because they are popular and sell well

so it's good to see SMG looking so great .. hopefully other devs will choose to make more platformers .. there's been a lack of quality ones recently IMO

but with SMG, and eventually BK3 (also R&C possibly) platformer-fans can be happy again
