I don't know... I haven't known Cerny to make any genre defining or defying games... Miyamoto has created several during his career.

No. His profile is not that big. A lot of the older Gameboy and NEs games was the other guy, he died and did the Wonderswan. (including some SNES games.)

I am surprised by some peoples lack of knowledge of what Nintendo has done for the industry. You can argue opinions of the companies tactics, sales, games and what not. What you can not argue is the fact that they resurrected the market and that has led to what it is today. They are responsible for what the console and handheld markets have become and the competition it has brought. They have brought many new ideas, some good and some bad, to the market which has also inspired innovation and change.

You realize that Sony may have never even entered the console market if not for Nintendo.

Have you noticed that the first PS controller is basically a SNES controller rip off with added palm grips?

The PS brand came out of a failed partnership of Nintendo and Sony to create a disc based system add on for Nintendo.

StrongBlackVine

None of that change the fact that Sony has been better than Nintendo since the first PlayStation.

Again that doesn't change the fact that Nintendos legacy is better. They have done more than any company can do. The PS lines may go down as better consoles but the Nintendo legacy can never be challenged.

Everybody copies from everyone. That's why competition is good. People improve on other people's original designs.

No.

Do a little research on the history of the NES. Do a little research and find that the Playstation brand came about because of Nintendo. You can deny all you want but Nintendo has done more than any company will do. They might not be on top now but that doesnt erase all they have done for the industry. The PS brand will no doubt have a great legacy and go down as some of the most loved systems but there is no denying what nintendo has brought to the masses.

Sony scored a major coup when Square jumped ship. That was the turning point. Nintendo still had Sony beat in first party support, however. It wasn't until the late PS2-PS3 era where Sony began to step on first party games. PS1 had some of the greatest RPGs released on that console, PS2 had Grand Theft Auto and Guitar Hero. Nintendo released two landmark titles on the N64. The only thing Sony did better than Nintendo was 3rd Party support, and even that shouldn't be taken for granted.

And I'm providing reasons why the PS1 sold so many consoles. Sony didn't rely on first party content to sell consoles, they had excellent 3rd party support.

Thing about Sony's legacy compared to Nintendo is that Sony is to quick to abandon their old mascots (or more specifically, never tried to retain the rights).

How does that have nothing to do with Sony? They had a failed arrangement that led to Sony releasing a system based on that failed attempt to co-create a disc based system. I never said Nintendo brought gaming to the masses I said Nintendo brought life and innovation back to the masses. Like I said read up on the state of the industry before the NES came along. They marketed the system as a toy to get it into homes and by doing so brought the market back.

Modern controllers have a lot of features started by Nintendo. The D-pad, use of analog for control in a 3D world, button placement, ergonomics, shoulder buttons, triggers on the back of the controller and even rumble. Four controller ports without adapters.

Thats just the controllers.

Sony and MS have tried to use motion controls after Nintendo succeeded with their use. Touch screen gaming as well.

The handheld market is full of innovation from Nintendo. Ever heard of the Game & Watch. Portable gaming in your pocket.

Then the Gameboy came along.

Nintendo has innovated over the years and many of the things they brought are used to this day by other companies.

They have brought innovation and some of the worlds best and most known games and characters.

Nintendo's legacy has been severly tarnished, Sony has obviously had some hiccups along the way but they've rebounded from them nicely, they are the most important company in gaming right now.

I don't know if Sony could really do that. No hate or disrespect towards Sony though, its just that Nintendo has one hell of a legacy behind them.

But Sony has been in the gaming industry for a long time as well and have had accomplished alot as well so I wouldn't say it is out of the realm of possibility.

I feel nintendo of today and nintendo of 1980s is totally different.I remember playing so much on my nes/snes etc and those were great games and that made me a gamer. If not for nintendo i would have never turned a true gamer or maybe not a gamer who would devote so much time to gaming. That time made me a person who loved games and felt the need to play games again and again cause they were awesome and were so original.

Nothing about the Nintendo Wii U can change the fact Shigeru Miyamato at Nintendo saved video gaming with Super Mario Bros. Also, Nintendo does things like no one else such as designing the portable video game system, the Virtua Boy technology, and integrating motion controls into a gaming console. Next, Nintendo's first party video game franchises are mostly greatly rated and financially successful. Nintendo does not even compete with other game companies, so it is in a place of its own.

With respect, I wish Nintendo never becomes like Sega is now because it is an integral part of the video game industry; Nintendo innovates technology and inadvertently aids in the continuation of a competitive industry. Shigeru Miyamato is one of the main reasons for Nintendo's outlook and introspection leading to the kinds of games that company makes and why it is still in business. Everything Nintendo does is not perfect and sometimes bad like the Virtua Boy (I liked the infrared and Tennis game, but it was uncomfortable and detrimental to long-term health), so that company does need to learn from its mistakes and the Wii U should probably get learned from. The Wii and Wii U are respective proof a peripheral consumers like will get bought and if not appealing will get declined when offered. Nintendo is currently in a position where improvements to video game system design could benefit with change and the overall influence of Nintendo is much greater than other video game companies.

Nintendo's legacy is only to admired, the one they're currently creating (errrm "sustaining") needs to be avoided at all costs.  As they are now they're pathetic, and I don't know who I resent more.....the company that rests easy, sitting on its ass doing nothing (way to use that head start since the Wii's cease of support, big N, love all that software), or the dopes that continually support and defend them, essentially enabling them to sit on their ass and move at the speed of a slug.

But man.....transparent pipes in Mario!  The true innovative gameplay evolution for platformers to tide us over until the next: physics for breakable bricks!!  Enabled by 7 year old hardware!  I can't wait to see what's in store seven years from now.  Oh wait, I already know, just not from Nintendo.  KEEP IT ROCKIN' guys!!!

Sony has two of the best selling systems ever including the best ever. Legacy is already cemented.

StrongBlackVine

Sooo, Sonys legacy is defined by being in the right place at the right time with DVD?

The PS2 is THE console.  No doubt about that.  But its rise to all out market ownage that pulled in all the great 3rd parties is for the most part owed to a disc format.

Sony has one hell of a legacy in this industry, but they are not on Nintendos level in this regard.

And if you think sales cement a legacy, look no further than Nintendo software.  If you think its scores, look to Nintendo.  If you think its longevity, look to Nintendo.  If you think its mainstream recognition, look to Nintendo.

Or you could just listen to the most seasoned gaming vet at Sony.

Everyone is focusing on mark cerny but sonys legacy is so much deeper than him, he's just the current good guy. Once upon a time gaming was the past time of kids and loners sat in their room infront of their tv but then sony came along and all of a sudden EVERYONE wants to play games and the once childish past time is catapulted into mainstream massively.

Gaming has exploded from there, the 360 may be the current fave for the masses but if it wasnt for sony that wouldnt even exist in the first place so think about that.

I do believe sony will have a legacy but not like nintendo, they will have their own equally as strong.

I'd say the PS2 and SNES are tied as two of the best consoles ever created with the best gaming libraries of all time.

When the N64 hit and nearly ruined gaming it was the PS that saved us from the tyranny of cartridges, cartridge prices, and many other Nintendo related limitations. Allowing games like FFVII to live up to their full potential.

Sony's legacy is second only to nintendo's but if things keep going how they are now. Sony might surpassed Nintendo after a gen or two
