""We'll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version... Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom. If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make.""

Naw doesn't have to be. There are several possibilities: The PC could release first, and the PS3 versions could have the mods. Or they could release the development tools to the community before the game is released...or they could hire a few spotlight modders to make a game for them a la counter-strike.

lets see just how well it sells. If it don't sell 1 million on the ps3 it is a flop, period! Then who cares just how much space was used when your games don't sell enough to generate a profit.

This thread kinda take his words out of context. But he mentions UT 2004, which was basically UT 2003 but with a whole lot of extra maps, mods and other add-ons created by the UT community. Basically, he's saying that while UT 3 is already having problems fitting on DVD9 discs, PS3 and its Blu-ray discs have more than enough space to fit all the extras they could ship with an updated version of UT3, possibly a "game of the year" edition or UT 2008 edition, etc.

If they couldnt fit the maps on the disc, couldnt they just make it free downloadable content?

Otherwise, this is pretty much bad news

Im with you on this one becuase the UT fanbase are PC gamers and well most console players had no Idea what UT was before this one and well I dont believe it will sell great and definetely not better than the PC version.

No, Epic could make it free if they wanted. This wont be like GeOW when MS forced Epic to charge for maps.

Why not?If the past gives us any indication of what M$ will do,then they'll make Epic charge or Epic will just charge to be buttholes(to M$).360 owners lose anyway. Some have the core and not everyone has live.

Because Epic has a track record of releasing loads of free downloadable content and even wanted to give away the GeOW map pack for free. They've often said how they want to give away extra content as downloadable content. So if they do give away the maps, they wont be charging for it

Yes, but MS cant force Epic to charge now since they arent publishing the game, unlike GeOW when they published the game.So no epic will give either give away the content for free or contradict themselves since no one can force them to charge

Gamefest 2007: Microsoft Approves PC-to-360 Map Editors

Someone should tell Epic Games.

By Patrick Klepek, 08/14/2007
One of the reasons Unreal Tournament 3 isn't showing up on Xbox 360 this Fall is Microsoft's approach to user generated content. At E3, Microsoft Game Studios head Shane Kim told 1UP that Microsoft wants complete control over what's transferred through Xbox Live, thus preventing Epic Games from allowing PC-created mods (a step further than just levels, as these could be completely new modes or even games) to appear in Unreal Tournament 3. Sony has no such restriction, thus helping its appearance on PlayStation 3.

At Gamefest 2007, however, Microsoft's official line was less clear. To deliver user generated content, developers can take advantage of what's called Xbox Live Silver Platform (XLSP), where the data transferred runs through the publisher's servers, not Microsoft's. Publishers then become responsible for what runs through it, monitoring and policing offensive content, etc. Taking advantage of it, however, requires Microsoft approval.

During a Q&A session on the topic, someone asked Microsoft Software Design Engineer Zsolt Mathe whether this meant a developer could then construct a level editor for use on a PC but created levels playable that were then playable on Xbox 360. "Even though nobody has done that, I would highly recommend that," said Mathe.

During the Gamefest panel, Microsoft was very specific about how publishers would have to keep a keen eye on the content, as it doesn't explicitly pass by Microsoft's eyes. Of course, as we mentioned, taking advantage of XLSP requires Microsoft's approval -- maybe that's the hold up for Epic, considering what Shane Kim told us in May about Microsoft's desire to keep a firm grip on content being exchanged on Xbox Live:

"We have just as much interest in that space as anybody else, but I will tell you that there is a lot of value to managing the service and system the way we do on Xbox Live, versus the wild, open, supposedly open PlayStation Network. You're going to have to be very careful about what happens and we'll see how much responsibility the platform holder actually takes there in terms of managing that stuff.

It's not unlike Sony PlayStation HOME. It's great to talk about all this, but assuming you could even build it, one of the biggest challenges is actually managing the behavior. We have a lot of experience doing this on Xbox Live and that's part of the value proposition we bring to our customers, is that you're going to have a great experience on Xbox Live and we take care of a lot of problems for you and don't just say it's the responsibility of the publisher of the responsibility of the community to manage this. We take accountability, we do that as the owner."

one problem with that, the pc version is on dvd too, and every mod has to be made on thegames for windowsversion. without the dvd version there are no mods. and he said the next one after this, thats 3 years away or more. the xbox 720 will be out by then. i'll be playing all the mods and stuff on my pc before the ps3 even gets a sniff, and i'll be playing bioshock and halo3 too. i dont like madden ot gta, but i can play the best version of madden and the full game of gta on my 360. with all the microsoft exclusives, including the unreal editor that all mods have to be made on, i'm gonna be busy playing, the waiting game ended almost 2 years ago for lemmings.

I seriously doubt the Ps3 will have a larger version than the 360, the data for maps don't take up much space.

Core owners made a choice and went with the core version

PS3 owners made a worse choice and went with the PS3

In the end it's their money and they can do what they want with it

or they could release a portion of the maps as a download, which would remain compressed on the HD. then whenever you load a map, the HD could uncompress just that one map for use. then the disc could be used for all the fundamental parts of the game and it could still be quite large. nuts to the people with no HD, hardly anyone got a core anyway

They can just release the maps as a download. Since MS isn't the publisher they can make it free.

They could always put up remaining maps as dlc, putting it on hard drives but tbh who cares. Take Counter Strike Source for example, people only play dust 2, it'll be the same deal. Only like 5 of the maps will actually get use after a few months of people trying them out.

On thw whole MS charging for mods and other user created content. I think it would be illigal to do that without giving th modder a % of the revenue. Can you really see MS doing that.
