The sheer number of foxy blue alien women in Mass Effect 2 has pushed the limits of the DVD format's storage capabilities. As a result, BioWare is spreading the Xbox 360 and PC game across two discs.

While that won't mean that much to owners of the PC version—it's a two-disc install—poor Xbox 360 owners will suffer the galactic inconvenience of a disc swap at some point. Chris Priestly, community coordinator of BioWare, says it's not so bad.

"Even though there is a disc swap, it occurs at a carefully planned place in the game (that does not interfere with gameplay) and is done once," Priestly wrote on the Mass Effect 2 forums. "You do not swap back and forth. 1 swap and then done."

Collectors Edition comes with three discs.

I'm almost done with the first Mass Effect, but I'm still not sure if I want this game or not. Mass Effect's combat is pretty dull.

I expect PS3fanboys to come and scream "if it was on the PS3 then it wouldn't need two disk!!!!"

I'm actually glad. This mean the game is most likely going to be longer. Beside getting your ass up and changing the disk shouldn't be that much of a difficult challenge.

Same reaction. I couldn't even get to finish Mass Effect 1 on PC (no matter how great looking it was). The story was engrossing, but I hated the combat system. It felt "clunky" and "stiff" to have shooting mechanics, cover tactics, dash moves ala GeOW in a wRPG of this type.

Only good side of this news is fact that game won't be compressed much, since now they don't need to care about fiting game in 8GB

Well, it's supposed to feel more like a shooter this time, if that's what you'd rather have.

Don't worry folks! According to Bioware and many hands-on from Gamespot, the combat has been completely overhauled and is no longer a weak point for the game :)

Actually i believe Bioware claimed they were making the shooter elements better, as many complained they were weak.

It's not gonna be more of a shooter, just the shooter side will be far better.

Anyhow, as a PC Mass Effect player, I am unaffected by this. I actually see it as a good thing, as it is a sign they have added more content...

I hope no one tries to claim ownage that you have to swap a disc once in the entire game.

We're talking seconds here. Possibly even a shorter time than some games take to load.

Did you read OP's post? Only one disc swap per career. It doesn't matter where you travel, you won't have to disc swap except at that story point.

Awesome... At least the game is structured in such a way that you won't have to install part of the game. That's the worst. I rue the day when I will be forced to buy a bigger hard drive to be able to download demos. I already can't rent HD movies. As long as Microsoft insists on maintaining their ridiculous hard drive price and won't make the 250GB one available I simply won't download the bloody things, if it comes to that.

I only would ahve been upset if half the planets were on one disc and half were on the other meaning multiple disc swaps, this however I can deal with. DVD is showing its age for HD consoles though.

I imagine that the only difference on the two disks is the main quest portion. The sidequests are probably cloned.

That's what I thought at first. But if you read TCs first post it says you only have to swap it once.

It could be that the majority of the data is actually the same on both discs, with only linear segments being on one or the other (such as videos for example.) Perhaps there are parts that close off as you complete them?

i think the only reason the xbox 360 version is two discs is because of cut scenes and audio, the two discs probly contain separate scenes but the rest of the discs content is the same.
