you know what i think Reapers are?

they are a WMD, AI driven with set protocols that we designed for an ancient enemy.

like a Biological bomb that doesn't recognize national borders, it got spun out of controls. It is AI for all intensive purposes, but there are set parameters that are in there hardwired in there..... it is in the nature of the 'weapon' that it operates the way it operates.

It's sort of the opposite of the Geth.. where the Geth are apparently inquisitive and curious as to why their creators turned on them. I'm inclined to think that the Reapers were of the opposite nature.

any thoughts on this?

I made that place go up like Hiroshima circa 1945.

That facility LIQUEFIED millions of human beings and used their remains to create an unholy abomination that was an affront to all mankind. You think I'm going to turn over something that should never exist in any sane dimension to a man who has no qualms about asserting total human dominance throughout the galaxy?

Saved it (Paragon run). The guy can't be trusted, but I figured that any tech developments towards destroying the reapers would be worth the risk. Besides I am pretty sure I will whack TIM off if he started any funny business.

I've done both across two playthroughs, but destroying it definitely seems like the best option.

Cerberus only care about one thing - human domination of the galaxy. Why hand them the technology to make that possible?

Sure, the new technology could be beneficial, but there's too much bad baggage around it that it's not worth it. Especially when it's technology like that that got us into the whole reaper mess in the first place. And it's not like Bioware aren't going to write a new ancient weapon into the third game, so I'm sure we'll live without it.

you know what i think Reapers are?

Heh, synthetic guardians that found the most effective way to defend a long-dead nation (through total extinction of all sentient life), that sort of thing?

Hm, I can totally see that happening...although I'll be disappointed, since another recent RPG had the same plot.

Well according to the game, destroying it is the morally right thing to do. Besides my Shepard can save the Galaxy on his own on insanity.

I'm not getting all of the hate for the Illusive Man/Cerebus. If the aliens had it their way, THE ENTIRE GALAXY would have been destroyed back in ME1. If the Alliance had it their way, you'd be dead. Even when you came back, they hated you and actually wished you had stayed dead. On top of that, they're ignoring the Reaper threat despite knowing that it's coming. It's as if they want to see the galaxy destroyed. The only person with any type of sense at all is the Illusive Man imo. I'm not saying you should bow down and worship him, but I don't get the hatred for the only person in the universe who's doing something to save the universe from certain and undeniable destruction. At worst, the Illusive Man wants humans to be the #1 aliens on the block. He hasn't done anything to show that he wants to enslave/destroy every other alien race though... unlike say the Batarians who are actively in the process of enslaving every other alien race. Destroying that station is like destroying your best shot at being strong enough to take down the Reapers from a firepower perspective and just from studying it and learning how they operate and possibly finding ways to defeat them. The Mass Relays are Reaper weapons designed to shape and influence civilizations and allow the Reapers instant access to destroy them. And that's not theoretical... it actually happened in the game. Everyone is totally ok with that, yet this station which can shed insight on their ways and how to defeat them must be blown sky high. Seems completely ass backwards to me, but maybe i'm crazy.

i think people hate him because he is a jerk to shepard. One can have a great argument with a horrible delivery, and it will come off the wrong way. I also thought the illusive man had good intentions, but he was just a jerk and callous toward everything and everybody.

What did Cerberus do to Veetor? I let him go back to the Migrant Fleet on my playthrough.

Phoenix534

They tortured him for information, drove him to the edge of insanity :P, apprently they inject him for every "wrong" answer he gave, and interrupts his air supply

Those bastards! Now I know I made the right choice. This is why I don't trust Cerberus.

this is exactly why i am behind cerberus. theres no time for tea and crumpets with guys who might have important information while we work towards questions. did you see how many reaper ships were in dark space?

even if the illusive man cant be trusted he presents the best chance to stop the reapers because hes working outside the lines. all other galactic powers are being inneffective and sticking their heads in the sand hoping shepard is wrong about everything. his xenophobic attitude isnt that big a problem given the stakes are literally every living organism. he doesnt have time to play nice with you and my shepard would have respected his direct approach. theres no time for games.

but well see how it goes ultimately.

I wish there were an option to save the station and NOT hand it over to Cerberus. Would have been cool if for instance the station could be handed over to the alliance and allow the Turians, Asari, Quarians, Salarians, etc, in addition to humans, access to the technology. An inter-stellar research collaboration would probably yield faster and better result than solely a human effort. I blew the sucker up on both my playthroughs though.

I destroyed it with my soldier class ( first renegade but in the end i went paragon )But i'm going to save it with my infiltrator ( renegade ) so in ME3 i can see the difference between saving it or destroying it. And with my sentinel class il probably destroy it again cause i'm gonna go paragon with him.

Definiteky destroyed it. As much as there's a threat from the Reapers, the threat Illusive Man could impose with such power would be just as big. Better to take our chances with facing the Reapers by other means. To say nothing of the moral and ethical ramifications of benefiting from that technology.

Plus when you talk to the crew in the game's aftermath, they all approve the action of destroying the base. Even Miranda who was his staunchest supporter didn't trust that technology in his hands

And my team's approval means more to me than the Illusive Man's, so... :P:P

My 1st play through I destroyed, the second I saved and the third I played up to the last level on insane ( with a vanguard  Yikes is it hard ) and have yet to go back to the game.

There are a few things I did different in each play through much the same way I did ME1 so I cover all bases in prep. for ME2 & ME3. :D

I am curious as to other gamers choice for the ending of Mass Effect 2 when given the chance to save the Collector Base or Destroy it. My choice was to save the base. Forget about the weary reputation of Cerebrus or the 'Illusive Man' the whole freakin Galaxy is facing extinction!! On that note I thought it is better to use all the advantages of info and technology that we can. We can debate 'right and wrong' after we get past the Total Annhiliation by Reaper part!! After all it was the tech that Garrus got from the last reaper ship 'Soverign' that provided the upgrade for the Normandy's cannons. Normandy destroyed the Collector Recon ship with TWO shots!

Well anyway that is my take I wasn't going for 'lets do the right thing and destoy the base' when the resulting end of that can be the death of everyone and everything. At least Cerebus gave a damn - so I gave them the base. What did you do?

*mod edit*

phearless

i created 2 characters in ME1 so i basically imported the two and had one destroy the base and the other keep the base just so i could find out what happens in the 3rd game

Played it through 4 or 5 times now and done both. If I had 1 choice I'd probably save it, simply because "we'd" need everything at our disposal against the coming storm, but man you know Cerberus are going do naughty naughty things with that stuff ...

On almost all playthroughs I saved it. The only time i destroyed it was the first playthrough, with my main paragon, I actually destroyed it at first, but everybody kept playing the hate card on me, so I went back to an older save and redid it. Even Miranda thought it was a bad idea to preserve it.

But seriously, the only way to destroy a giant reaper army is with lots of sophisticated reaper technology! Destroying a reaper breeding bay is about the stupidest things you could do! No matter who gets their hands on them, Cerberus might be a somewhat evil organization, but they do not want to kill EVERY civilization out there... Although I know this reasoning is meaningless since everything in the third game is going to be scripted and no matter what you did in the previous games (apart from dying) you will be able to destroy the Reapers.

I've played through it a few times now. The best character which I took from Mass Effect 1 immediately destroyed it. I'd saved the council etc etc so the smoking man's promise to put cerberus at the top rubbed me the wrong way. Then I did a renegade run just to see what happened. Important thing is, making the choice on my own I destroyed it.

As for the main boss, sure it was a rip off of The Terminator but it looked fantastic!

i think there was more important desicions in the game then the collecter base winning over the qaurians and rewriting the geth to side with you is alot better i rather have millions of geth and qaurians on my side then a silly base ( but i have two save files one i destroyed the base one saved ) mass effect 1 also has alot of important desicions i think that will effect the game (btw who ever said reapers arent that powerful woooow haha) did you not see the soviergn ram into a ship break it like a twig and keep flying shooting lasers out of its tentacles cutting ships in half left and right and now theres what looks like (cut screen at end) 1000's if not 10,000s of thousands of reapers those odds im thinking you will really need the collecter base. back drop of it i think is if you saved the council in numba 1 you tell them about collecter base and they take it from cerebus if its human council i think there will be a civil war between turians and humans (listen to galatic news if council was not saved turians withdraw from citadal fleets and start building a bigger one and over the qouta of ships there were supposed to be able to maintain by citidal law obivous build up = war and if humans are at war with turians well the game is over when the reapers come there is alot of rascism between species saving council is better then killing if you wanta defeat reapers killing them just creates more racism and eventaully war will persue

Destroyed it. I could go on about the risk of leaving it in the hands of Cerberus, or the likelihood of a repeat of the derelict Reaper incident, but at the end of the day, it was just awesome making that thing go boom.

Spoilers for Mass Effect Retribution
Kidnaps a rival (Paul Grayson), implants Reaper tech into him in an act of revenge as well as research. He escapes when the Turians attack the Cerebrus facility, putting the IM in a combat situation fo rthe first time in years. The subject is "rescued" but kills the entire crew and flies himself towards Grissom Academy, and ends up being chased and killed by Admiral Anderson. The IM also secures an alliance with Aria of Omega, who he successfully tricks her into believing Grayson killed her daughter, when Cerebrus actually did during the kidnapping.
The IM and Cerebrus will be in open war with the Council and the Turians come ME3. I expect them to be fully antagonists.
