Poll Mass Effect 2 (X360 version) Is the highest rated RPG of all time. (78 votes)

I agree with the universal critic opinion 13%
I think that the people who rate this game high are insane 18%
Mass Effect 2 is an Rpg? 35%
I would tie it with another game(s) 6%
I think that it's one of the best, but not the greatest 28%

According to MetaCritic and Gamerankings, Mass Effect 2 for the 360 is the greatest RPG of ALL TIME with the highest rating out of them all.

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/genre/metascore/role-playing/all?view=condensed

http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=&cat=48&year=0&numrev=0&sort=0&letter=&search=

I incidentally stumbled upon an option that showed me this reality. Apparently the universal consensus is that Mass Effect 2 on the 360 is the best RPG of all time.

DO YOU AGREE?

Not really much of an RPG, and I wouldn't rate it all too high in whatever genre it turns out to be. Amazing story, but the gameplay was just very meh to me.

I love Mass Effect 2, it's one of my favorite games of the last generation, but calling it the greatest RPG ever just seems... wrong.

The only high-scored true traditional RPG I know is Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (PC), and it´s a PC exclusive,

Who says it's the best rpg ever? ME2 is a sci-fi shooter with rpg elements. More of an evolution of Alien Trilogy.

The rating is so high because 360 has low standards.

@ Rheinmetal

I say so.

Its evolving and using the medium to move foward, "Practical RPGs" just weren't really possible before, its about time Bioware shed these conventions and drag old RPG fans, kicking and screaming, into a more evolved form of the genre.

Mass Effect 3 is better. It was the only game to find a balance both narratively and gameplay wise.

ME2 is oh so close in my book. Bioware style RPGs are my favorite so they instantly trump all others in my eyes. So a list of their top 3 to me would be the top 3 rpgs ever created. That list would look something like this:

KOTOR

ME2

ME

Not a slight to any other rpg makers as I am fond of many of them, just none of them have captured the magic that I've enjoyed so much about Bioware's pre-EA work (ME2 was published by EA but they didn't really affect it like they did ME3).

Bioware's pre EA work, minus Baldur's Gate I and II, is pretty overrated.

Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR had better sequels, Jade Empire had some bad story flaws, and really ME1 had weak characterization that the sequels had to fix while ME2 had a weaker plot, which the strong characterizations had to cover.

And really, ME3 is better than the first two games. Why? Because not does it only balance its RPG and action elements, it was the only game in the series to balance both strong plot progression and character development. Nevermind the game's story also had an even bigger human element than even ME2, and it took risks and deconstructed the space opera. And while the ending needed an expansion, it did truly thematically wrap the series.

I agree. If only Squaresoft made the Playstation version without those awful load times.

Absolutely.

Its funny how FFXIII-2 tried to ape the conversation wheel.

And some aspects of this trilogy, such as the format for ME2, or a major optional scene in ME3, reminds me of the best FF game, FFVI.

I have heard of the Ultima series, but have not played it. I read the wikipedia page for it and that game seems interesting. Plus, it is free on gog.com and compatible with my operating system, so I will give it a chance at some point.

Be advised though, they have not aged well....a good game to try first is actually Ultima V Lazarus, its a more updated remake of Ultima V, what I consider the best written in the series, other than Ultima VII Part Two.

I already downloaded Ultima IV, so while I appreciate the suggestion, I will be playing that first.

Speaking of Ultima V Lazarus, the designer of that mod now works for Bioware, he will be a lead designer for the next Mass Effect game.

Not only did EA allow him to make an Ultima mod, as they own the rights to the series, they hired him.

Mass Effect is a box tick game designed for a mainstream audience. Dude bro media that have never actually played RPG's.

Bioware doesn't know how to write characters either. The romance and relationship is like it's written data from startrek who factually knows what love and sex are but still doesn't comprehend it.

Yea but the pc has Baldurs Gate and Vampire: Bloodlines. We care not for mediocre console "rpg's".

Two problems with metacritic. First is, the site didnt even release until 2001 meaning there are many games that aren't even on it.

Second problem is that the rating system is very flawed. Metacritic sees an F as a zero while many reviewers see that as a 50. When a reviewer gives a game a rating of "B-", Metacritic assigns it a value of 67—and many publishers, developers, and websurfers think that the score should be closer to 80.

It's BS.

It's like saying OOT is the best game ever because it's the highest on metacritic. Everyone knows OOT is overrated, so is Mass Effect 2.
