I realize many people seem to dislike the fact that many single player focused games are getting multi-player features (Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, BioShock), but why be so quick to judge? Multiplayer adds much more extra life to a game anyways, and by the way, it happens to be fun playing games with friends.

I don't know whether BioWare will truly implement a multiplayer feature in the Mass Effect series, but even if they did, it's not like all focus on the single player is lost.

There are to many hasty generalizations that suggest multiplayer ruins the developers focus on singleplayer which is not the case at all. All I wanna say is at least wait until you've actually played both the single AND multiplayer aspects of the game and then make your final call about which has recieved more T.L.C.

MuddVader

Have you played Mass Effect? The dialogue portions alone would be massacred. Imagine a multiplayer game with a dialogue wheel, and many conversations throughout the game that lasted several minutes and in which only one player could choose reactions while the other sat idly by.

Yes I have played BOTH Mass Effect games. I beat 2 on insanity (check my gamerprofile to see, same as GS user name)

Yet you are quickly making asumptions of what the multiplayer may be like when we don't know anything at all about the third installment. How do you know the multiplayer will consist of a dialogue wheel? Are you saying it's co-op? How do you know?

Again, as I said before, peolpe are just making hasty generalizations and judging way too soon. So many people were upset that BioShock and Assassin's Creed got multiplayer features, and guess what: they are some of the freshest multiplayer experiences this gen; I enjoyed both thoroughly. And guess what else? They each also have anexhilerating single player component.

but the narrative was lacking in brotherhood compared to the other games which is what mass effect is all about

BH was a spinoff too. So if they ****** up it was not apart of the main games.

Unless of course you grew up in an age where playing by yourself was the only option... or playing in the same room as your real-life friends.

I've never understood the appeal of playing online. Sure, I played Call of Duty and Day of Defeat online... but was as rewarded playing that as I would have been playing with smart bots. There is nothing to connect me to the other players. But when playing in the same room, I know who they are, and can have fun with them outside the game... which is the point of group socializing. When I play games, I prefer to play games alone. Which is why this focus on putting MP in everything has me very disheartened with the modern gaming industry.

I don't care if putting MP into a game "adds" something for you. I see it merely as sprinkles on the icing on the cake. I don't really like them, but do see that some people do like them, but they aren't necessary to make a good cake. In a SP-driven game like ME, MP is the absolute last thing it needs.

Then don't play it. Besides, I highly doubt that a multiplayer feature will ruin the awesomeness that is the Mass Effect story. I'm sure they already had the story completed long ago before ever deciding to implement a multiplayer aspect.

Also, I too prefer to play single player games over playing online; but I don't let it get me down when a dev "ruins" a game by adding these features. In fact, it's welcoming because once i complete the single player portion enough times, I can continue the gaming experience online.

i grew up in a era where online did not exist too. and i completely see the appeal of online gaming. when me and my friends grew up we moved apart, got married, had kid etc. no we very rarely go to each other houses to 'play with each other'. we do meet up at weekends at the local pub or for some games of squash. but for the most part we communicate while playing online games. its fantastic, all of us chatting, playing games and having fun.

Yeah, in your own opinion. Brotherhood is an amazing experience that adds to a character that I already love and know much about, just like Rapture was sort of a character and you got to see what effects had happened after the previous games.

I would love to continue this interesting conversation, but unfortunately I have a sociology exam (@#$% !!!).

Keep this thread bumped!

[QUOTE="skrat_01"]It's a rumour. Personally some sort of imaginative online integration with the singleplayer like Demon's Souls could be very interesting.... Than the usual tacked on 'look it's the same old thing in our universe' as almost every game that adds multiplayer does..h575309
This would be pretty tough to do with a story driven SP game. (and something, to be honest, that would be too ambitious for 1.5-2 yr development) And knowing EA, if anything it would be tacked on Team Deathmatch.

It really depends on the creative input, it could be done.... it's just that messing with such an established IP in indeed a short time frame.... with a big publisher breathing down your neck really isn't going to help at all.

Yes, it MIGHT. Doesn't mean it will. Just have some faith in BioWare. They know what they are doing (although I know many people will disagree on that because of BioWare's so called "casualization" or "dumbing down"... I personally think it's genious to make a game more accessible).

I should have clarified
"If the multiplayer is online co-op and not just deathmatch and so on to appeal to the Halo and CoD audiences"
I was this close to editing my post to say something like that in there, but I stopped myself and figured that it wasnt needed. Seems I was wrong.
You are taking offense for nothing in any case =V Tone it down a notch

If they make the story mode multiplayer they would HAVE to sacrifice a lot of things to make it accessible. I'm not saying it will consist of a dialogue wheel (because that makes zero sense 0 _ o), but it wouldnt be Mass Effect without a dialogue wheel of some sort, now would it?
Read the rest of the thread and you would see how I already stated that I would take Online deathmatch and CTF over co-op.
God this post is allover the place.

Nintendo made NSMBW more accessible, but its still as hard as f***. They gave the casuals a means of getting through it without being frustrated, WITHOUT removing the elements that appeal to the core audience.

If it's co-op, I'm all for it... if it's death match type of stuff, I don't see myself playing it much because the action isn't as good as the RPG elements.

im probably one of biowares greatest fans played just about every game they have had a hand in since the black isle days and they have never created a game with good mp (no mp really unless you count the lobby system in nvn which wasnt good) so why start on a game that needs to end with a great sp experience just like the previous 2 games before it?

My idle choice for Multiplayer in a game like this would be something more advanced than what Fable 2 and 3 do with friends playing simultaneously while roaming cities... perhaps with some sort of side quest Co-op unrelated to the main story line in which you ditch your current party members to join other player characters for co-op specific quests. Maybe combat arenas for a competitive aspect. I personally don't plan on playing the main story line with anyone else, and I am sure I am in a majority. I think if that is the route they take, it will end up being a waste of time.

If it were like a Co-Op MP online I could see that being awesome (like borderland) But if its just another generic 3rd person shooter with "RPG"elements shoehorned in then its going to be a disaster.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Publishers and devs need to realize that not every game needs multiplayer. We have games like Halo, CoD, Battlefield etc for our multiplayer needs. So why do we need a bunch of games with a singleplayer focus with multiplayer?

sts106mat

if it doesn't detract from the story (difficult TBH) it could be fun mixing biotics and weapons / objective based team deathmatches etc.

We said that with bioshock and look what happened

That seems like a bad idea to me if its true. It's really an rpg hybrid and those games don't generally do well in MP. Besides, does its fanbase really want a MP mode?

The worst part about this rumor isn't the rumor of a possible multiplayer mode in a single player series. It's the part where Bioware has not debunked it yet.

Even if the multi is made by another team, in a different building, I'd rather they tell them to play test it to make it as bug free as possible instead of wasting time with multiplayer for a game that doesn't need it.

It's a rumor for one thing. Another thing is that it is a different dev team at Bioware working on this project, which could be ME related because Bioware stated ME would not be confined to a trilogy.

So please stoppasting the same thread.

I cant believe how badly they mistook several of the complaints. You could go to any board and find the same thing which really puzzles me.

For example, when the first released alot of people said they did not like the frequent elevator scenes. We werent saying they were bad (party banter was great), just that there were too many. ME2 comes around and Bioware promises to improve the situation. All they did was replace the elevator scenes with long load screens. NO-ONE asked for it yet this is how they interpreted it. And on another note, you didnt even need to watch the elevator scenes in the first game if you used Citadel transport.

Again with the Mako and planetary exploration. We said it was a bit wonky, improve it. They get rid of it all together.

Its pretty funny, i remember jumping for joy at the prospect of a ME2 reveal but now I dont really care about the 3rds announcement.

I hope not, I don't want it to affect their single player development. Who knows though, if true it could be cool, but so much it will really need to be good which I doubt it could hold up against the big MP games this gen.

Come on now, they got rid of it with good reason and replaced it with the hammerhead along with driving only sections that were a great alternative to the massive landscapes filled with nothing.

As for the multiplayer, I really fail to see what´s the big deal. They could very well getting support from another studio focusing on the multiplayer portion of the game.

[QUOTE="iammason"]Yes, it MIGHT. Doesn't mean it will. Just have some faith in BioWare. They know what they are doing (although I know many people will disagree on that because of BioWare's so called "casualization" or "dumbing down"... I personally think it's genious to make a game more accessible).

I lost all my faith when they caved in to all the complaints about the first game and removed several things I liked... especially the Mako.

Clearly they don't know what they are doing if all three games of their trilogy are going to be massively different from one another.

Nintendo made NSMBW more accessible, but its still as hard as f***. They gave the casuals a means of getting through it without being frustrated, WITHOUT removing the elements that appeal to the core audience.

Its pretty funny, i remember jumping for joy at the prospect of a ME2 reveal but now I dont really care about the 3rds announcement.

this is why i've lost faith with bioware and why im not too excited about Dragon Age 2. Instead of improving their games and fixing the complaints people might have had with them..they scrap them. They caved

There was nothing wrong with the idea of the mako, inventory system, elevator rides,etc..so why get rid of them?

Didn't they come out with a FREE add on with a new vehicle? BioWare knows how to cater to their fans, and they continue to evolve their games, even if that means scrapping certain elements that almost no players used. And I know it's a cheap shot, but look at gamerankings or MetaCritic; the reviews should say enough, and I don't think to many critics were upset with the major changes. To each his own though:)

Bioware is the casual king now!

Seriously I'm so disappointed with bioware right now...... Turning ME3 into an inferior gears of war isn't cool.

Rougehunter
lol The publisher, EA, just declared singleplayer games dead. Suits the franchise, though. It's got basic shootemup mechanics, just adapt for multiplayer and go.

Let's hope it's just a spin-off. That could actually be cool. I don't want them wasting precious disk space on a multiplayer no one will play after the first month anyways.

Seriously. Mass Effect 2 took 2 discs (on the 360 anyways) and that was JUST for the single player. If I find out in a couple of months that Mass Effect 3 is going to only need one disc, WITH multiplayer....Gaming is dead to me

Agreed!

EA strikes again !! Yet another brilliant game is gone down the toilet because of the worst publisher in the history of video games
