Mass Effect is by far the best rpg of this generation and the best writing ever

We have a winner.

BioWare is making Dragon Age as a spiritual successor to BG2... According to them, the game is looking amazing. You have moral choices too. Seems to be a new theme in RPG's. anyway, according to them, you have much deeper moral choices in Dragon Age than in any of their previous games, Mass Effect included. Things like, want to become a tyrant and slaughter the populace of a town or become a benevolent king, helping the city to flourish. At least that is what I read in PC Gamer Magazine. Sounds good.

PS - That was in a column at the end of the Holiday issue talking about the RPG's they have the highest hopes for.

Judging the entire piece based on a few lines for the win!

You should be a critic. Most of those tools actually go through the entire piece before making their final judgement, but you can view a few tidbits and take in the entire thing! Ebert and Roper look out!

It is way to early. You all don't know anything about the games that are going to be released in the future. Mass Effect could be the best of the year, but not the best in the next five years. No way.

Gamespot gives it an 8.5. Gamespot is one of if not the hardest critics who reviews games. 1/2 point away from AAA status is not a mile. IN their review they nitpick and often exagerate things. Gamerankings has it at 93% after 27 reviews.

The story and attention to detail is jus mind blowing. Information on techonology, races, planets, ships, rank, etc. I have spent hours jsut reading through my codex just looking at the information I have unlocked. I"m 23 hours in and have barely even touched the main story.

This is an epic game and one that no rpg lover should miss. Miles better then morrowind and an evolution from Kotor.

where is all this Oblivion fanboyism coming from :? ? Mass Effect is BY FAR the better RPG. Oblivion's RPG elements are so undeniably weak that nobody in their right mind can call it the best RPG.

Perhaps Oblivion is the better GAME, but certainly not the better RPG.

actually the ff stories are getting kind of lame and stupid... it's always some 17-18 year old kid who has his family killed and now seeks revenge on the bad guy. it's just generic plots and no real side quests to think of. although ff 12 was pretty good, but still mass effect is a lot better.

Come on, let's be honest. I like Mass Effect, but it's not exactly an RPG in the tradional sense, at all. It's more of an Action game riddled with non-combat RPG mechanics. The combat mechanics more closely resemble GEARS than any other Action Adventure game. The Mako? That's completely twithced based and has no upgrade mechanices built in whatsoever. The Dialoge, Inventory, and Cla$$ Managment are RPG features, but the combat is far from being an RPG. Before you attempt to flame me, I've played the heck out of it, I like it, but the truth is the truth.

Agreed. I did the same with KOTOR. I was the nice guy first time around, and then the second run through I just bit%$ slapped anyone who got in my way. On topic, I must agree. All you seem to be saying there is that it's not a traditional RPG. As if an RPG tthat happens to bend or chane some of the rules then it ceases to be an RPG. So by your reckoning unless everything follows the orthodox RPG rule to the exact note then it doesn't count as an RPG. Everything must be upgradable and levelable and all combat must be turn based with a heavy reliance on stats and dice role rules.

In a role playing game you play a role which is exactly what you do in ME and to a much greater extent than almost any other RPG I've played. You can choose your background and your history, your sex, whom you want to seek a love interest with, how you react to people and how you conduct yourself in conversations and throughout the game as a whole. What is that if not role playing? Sheperd becomes the role you want them to be.Compare it to something likeOblivion where your character never infact speaks and people react to you almost exactly the same regardless of how you play the game or the history your character has. In Mass Effect it actually has a profound effect on how the game plays out and how people respond and act around you.

The Mako not being upgradable has nothing to do with it. I'm glad talented developers such as Bioware don't have such a narrow perspective on what makes a certain genre of game. Otherwise we'd still be playing the exact same RPG's we were playing 10 years ago.
